Why don't we just trade for a linebacker?

Pessimism is just a lack of faith, nothing more. I seriously doubt being a pessimist makes the failure hurt any less.

Simply put, if you have hope at the beginning of every season, then at least your misery gets interrupted once a year.

Good one DJ. I recall quite a few folks were hella pissed we didn't get Flynn. Or Orton, Kolb, Mallett, Quinn. Hell I thought taking Tannehill was a bad idea. Oops. It's always good to man up and admit u had it all wrong, otherwise you end up w I'm smarter than the pros disease, not only contagious, hella annoying too.

So true. I worry about people who are all doom and gloom about sports. It's only entertainment, if it makes you angry or depressed or whatever then why watch?

It's because every failure has a new beginning BK, different blood..part of the joy for me is identifying the wrong and finding the new, all for the chase to be a dynasty, not a one year wonder..

It takes the right GM, and the right head coach.

Okay... I can see that. Do you think the owner has a big effect? In our case, I do. I think everything trickles down from the top... unless you have an absentee owner, I guess.

I feel he honestly wants the team to win...he just doesn't know how to go about making it happen. He's shotgunning advise from anywhere he can get it evidently, so that tells me he at least WANTS to win. Maybe he gets too involved at times...not involved enough other times...he just doesn't have the pulse on it IMHO.

    Pretty much agree.

Don't really care about owners wanting to win as if that's a point in any owners favor. Is there an owner who wants to lose?

All three positions have equal importance, For me the owner has to want to make the organization first class, just like any successful company, if he has the intellect to do that, then to stay out of the football people's way, and have open pockets, then I think any potential great GM or coach would join, I don't think he has to be some genius..

It's a talent acquisition business, always has been always will be, so the GM is of equal importance..there's a fine line between a fair evaluator and one that is great, could be 1 or two players an offseason, but those wins in the eval dept are crucial, and contrary to what anyone says, it's not luck.

Then the coaches have to motivate and cultivate, then have the intellect to scheme correctly and communicate..

J/K...I hear ya, and agree, I just don't know how he fixes it. I can't even begin to fathom what he talks about with coaches/advisors/executives...but I sincerely hope he's smart enough to realize what he has in Lazor (provided he doesn't stink up the joint, but I'm highly convinced he won't).

My hope (as always) is that the team does well. Last year was such a ride...such a ride...got let down at the end but DAMN was there some great Dolphin football last year...we should have a higher % of that stuff this year, and I attribute most of what I expect to Lazor. Hell, with the gains we should see on Offense, the LBs could be just as sh***y as last year and we'll still be better off, and in the playoffs.

Hickey also seems to be on a good start...but that will need time to judge as well of course.

Ross may be taking advice from too many people also...getting clouded by too many different approaches and recommendations. Philbin may or may not be the HC we need, this season will tell a LOT. I think Ross would hand him his papers if he fails this year, not sure he blows it up, but I'm fairly sure Philbin "would" be gone (but we'll be in the playoffs, so it won't matter).

All I know is I'm pumped...even more-so than I was going in to last year...which was my highest excitement going in, in MANY years.

I think we've also seen that it can be more important how well the GM and HC mesh than having the two 'best' candidates if they don't mesh well.

Not that we've ever had the two best candidates, but you get the idea.

True. Considering that, do you think Hickey has worked well with Philbin and the coordinators? My only knock on him is he didn't maximize available OL signings...don't think he stunk it up, but could've done better considering who was available.

Well, there's almost no chance of this team having a similar-type of distraction or off the field problem this year so that alone should be a massive help, imo. Seriously.

How hard must it have been to stay focused, motivated and cohesive during all that crazy **** (including the disappearing linemen trick!)

My feeling is that we'll make the playoffs and Philbin will remain. I don't like Philbin too much though and feel like he's a guy who isn't an strong enough personality to march a team all the way to a Superbowl victory. Of course, we could argue whether personality matters in a leader, but it wouldn't change my mind or the other people's minds. lol.

I think we have a window of opportunity where Hickey's strengths will fill the holes left my Ireland's weaknesses and give you the best of both worlds.

This is similar to what happened in 2008, imo, when we had our prior GM change from Randy Mueller to Jeff Ireland.

Eventually, though, Hickey will let Ireland's type of guys go and we'll have an incomplete pie again, imo, showcasing Hickey's weaknesses as holes on the roster.

Very few GMs are strong at all aspects: Free Agency, Draft, Pro PLayer retention, internal scouting and assessment, QB, OL, WR, RB, TE, LB, DL, CB, S, STs. Each GM has some weaknesses.

Ya he's a bit of a stone...but the Giants have a HC with the personality of a rock too, but at least he gets fired up and in some asses. And then there's the Hoodie himself...definition of zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Thing with them is though, IMHO, they install a system/framework for their team and stick with it no matter what...players eventually buy-in, and they enjoy some success. They may alter it slightly to fit the players and their specialties, but it's basically the SAME system, year-in year-out.

Our team seems to be buying in a lot more to Philbin this year than in previous years, and they're ALL locked in with Lazor and his philosophies (good thing Lazor's callin' the plays...I don't think Philbin knows how to).

Everyone gets along in the beginning. Ole Jeffy and Philbin were on the same page at once.

Well, he did sign one of, if not the best LT on the market. He also used a first round pick on an OLineman. He signed a couple of other guys who may be sufficient for now. We already have/had a pro-bowl center.

I believe that's are a good number of owners more concerned with profits than wins. I don't mean that as a slight, I also think there are a lot of players more interested in gettin paid than winning games. I dunno where Ross fits in w respect to the other owners but he seems to be a decent guy. I give him credit for financing the stadium upgrades and I'm so glad he dropped the no 1pm home games early in the season crap. Heat is our only advantage at home, we sure as hell don't have crowd noise or inclement weather.

They were bad last season, by all reports they have been bad in practice this camp, and they were bad last game.

I'll tell ya some of the things I see with Ellerbe, at least as a Mike. IMO. He is slow reacting, he takes false steps, he doesn't read and react correctly much of the time. He does not take on blocks well. As a reliable wrap up tackler he is mediocre.

All your favorite teams are located in Sou Fla huh? So, you like them because of where they are located, not because of anything to do with the composition of the team when you first started following them?

That's what it is for me. Though I do get pissed off sometimes and excited some too. I very seldom get angry at any Dolphin player, no matter what mistake they may make. I'd guess 90% of the times I get really upset, it is because of the officials. Get over it pretty quick though.
I think many of the young fans though live vicariously through their favorite players and when said player does something stupid off the field, they seem to take it as a personal affront.

I agree. I think he overpaid for Albert in his zeal to get one of the premier left tackles. Albert is no better than Monroe who signed for like $8 mil less over the life of the contract. Albert should be a good player for us, but Hickey overpaid. I guess if he'd offered less and missed on all the good LTs though, we'd be really upset with him.

Yeah pretty much. I grew up in Miami so I'm in for all SoFla teams, the only exception is Noles over Canes.

100%. Overpaid for Albert, may have over drafted James too. Had to be done though, OL ruined the season in 2013, if they didn't fix I woulda started the clean house threads myself.

Isn't Jonathan Vilma a F.A.? Why isn't the front office looking at him? He's a proven 4-3 LB with pro bowl seasons on his resume. He also strikes me as very intelligent player and person in general with good football instincts. Is he a bad guy because of the bounty scandal? IMO not anymore then the current dolphins players that didn't want to divulge what goes on in the locker room when JoAnn Martin claimed his Vag hurt last season in that epic soap opera bullying "scandal"last season. (How the eff do you bully a 6'-5", 300lb+ man??!) Granted he is 32yrs old and shredded his knee a few years back but a simple physical will clear that up. If cap space permits, I think the front office should explore this contingency.

I think they'll wait until after week 1(contract will be non-guaranteed) to bring in a vet LB.
