You call TOOL "bloated and overrated" (the most rediculous tyhing ever uttered) yet Zep are "the greatest musicians of our time? Zep? the KINGS if dragging songs on and on and on and on? Jon Bonham was a TALENT, dude is still the bar setter of the genre but the rest of it? Meh....

BTW, I love Alice, they are dear to my heart and still one of my favorite bands ever but calling them "great musicians" is a stretch. Layne was a talent and very unique but Jerry Cantrell has not evolved at all (and plays a very basic guitar style) and Sean Kinney has never been anything but a drummer that keeps time.

    You're right about opinions though...

Maynard did a few tunes for a Tsunami benifit concert in Seattle. I have a good bootleg of Maynard doing "Them Bones" and he did the usual Maynard thing. He pulled it off very well, it sounds great.

The "rumours" were nothing but an internet thing. He has about 4 projects going on at any one time. Maynard has been good friends with the guys from "Chains" for years. In fact, one of Layne's last public singing appearances was with TOOL not long before he passed away.

As for "talking over the music". I guess you've missed their last 2 records because I don't recall him doing any of that. Their music is involved and takes an attention span. They are a progressive band.

I will always defend them. People can dislike them (I know many) and people can "not get it" but saying "everything sounds the same" and that they are "monotonous" is simply bull **** of the highest degree.

and no matter how many times I have the argument it always comes down to bands are like free agent athletes; they should look to get paid. id rather they make the money then just the freakin record company. As long as the band stays true to its form its all good. Some bands do sell out to the money. Others dont. :wink2:

Where did I say bands shouldn't make money? I don't get what you're trying to say. You don't need radio to make money in this business.

Your opinion. Read my back posts. There were plenty of bands in the 80's alot angrier and alot BETTER than what followed in the 90's.

As for your generation having it's own Who, Zep and the Beatles...that remains to be seen. When that music stands the test of time like the Who & company, then you can say that.

Again, your basing it by what was on the radio. As long as I've been listening to music, people who are REALLY into rock music didn't give two ****s what was on the radio. The real rock and metal fans didn't care about the hair bands on the radio. The bands they liked were still playing and making records that you heard about in other places.

The radio is for the masses. Fans of bands couldn't care less.

The 80's were big on crap. Everything good got pushed underground. That's my point. It was Nirvana that punched back through.

Fair points. But I was just countering your point that I can't attack Poison because they didn't destroy hair metal, even worse bands Faster *****cat destroyed hair metal. With which I completely disagree with.

The biggest thing happening in rock, and no one's ever heard of it?

Have you heard of Coachella, and Bonnaroo?

I took a cheap shot at Maiden, please forgive me. I defend them all the time. With that being said, I don't have a problem with bands that keep doing the same thing so long as they keep doing it well, but more often than not they keep trying to re-create past glory. When you do that, you are no longer relevant as an artist. I'll take the artist that evolves and takes me to new places, rather than just serving up the nostalgia year after year.

Metal bands are a specific genre that usually has to sound like crap in order to break into the mainstream. There are some genres of music that are better off not ever slipping into the mainstream, metal is certainly one of them. But I disagree with your point that those bands needed radio more than anyone else. It was easier with radio airplay, but most of them would have been just fine remaining "underground."

I've been to plenty of shows, just not many hair metal shows. My first concert was Poison - Tesla at Nassau Coliseum, I was 12. I haven't seen a hair band since.

Kids have short attention span, I'll take a band that can keep the crowd on their feet for 2 hours, while "just standing there" and playing great music, over the band covering up their tired old sound with bells and whistles.

Again, I think it's cause I'm quoting you and breaking up the paragraphs, please dismiss the bold.

Took me a while to like them, Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness is the only album I own. When they get down and play some hard ****, they can be okay.

But his voice is still the gayest thing this side of Robert Smith.

You should pick up Siamese Dream, some pretty heavy stuff on that album.

His voice takes a liking too, but eventually you start to like it.

As far as radio, thats why I said I wasnt getting where you were going with it. It seems like you were/are holding it against any kind of radio music...thats the way i understood it anyway. And where I was going with that is that theres only 2 reasons you would do that is that you felt it was greed or just trying to be too pop culturish.

As far as withstanding the test of time, many of the bands to come out of that grunge/early 90's alt rock era are going on 15 years or so. Which I know thats a blip on the overall radar but its not bad. For many of them the popularity has not faded in part because few new good bands have really emerged since.

However aside from GNR, Metallica, RHCP, the beastie boys, and maybe 3-4 bands Im missing right now, there isnt much good that came out of the 80's imo. Seems as though we will have to agree to disagree there. At least we both love your ladies lounge work so its always all love bro :hi5:

We agree on your last line. I will always love the music of bands some in this thread deem overrated like Pearl Jam and Nirvana and especially RATM. I know its no consolation to you but I was watching MTV playing hookey from school the day Evenflow was released on MTV. We didnt even have an alt rock station at that time in NY. I was a Pearl Jam fan when the band was still known as Mookie Blaylock after the former basketball player. Radio sometimes expands your taste in music so I wouldnt act like its all bad. One day your band may be thanking radio and I hope they are :hi5:

Siamese Dream is a great album. I don't own any of their albums but I remember their songs on radio and IMO is the only rock band worth listening to. I mean Corgan's voice is a little creepy but the guy can actually sing. I can't stand bands that just shout and thrash things. I appreciate a person who can actual belt a tune. If anyone thinks his singing is gay you must be tone deaf. Corigan IMO is also one of the greatest song writers i have ever heard. His musical compositions are fantastic.

Then you weren't much of a metal fan bro. The 80's was the pinnacle decade for metal.

Maiden, Priest, Dio, Motorhead, Saxon, Exodus, Anthrax, Testament, Savatage....I could go on forever.

It's funny though. The bands you DID mention were the radio staples. :wink2:

Well considering Blink split IN their prime I'm not sure what else you would look at.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I suppose. I've never heard anyone ever refer to them as emo until I read this thread and IMO they are definitely not but too each their own.

If you like his voice you should check out the Deftones. Chino Moreno has the best set of pipes this side of Maynard from TOOL IMO.

If you want a real treat check out the Deftones song 'Passenger'. Maynard does a guest spot on that song and it gives me chills every time I hear it.

I'm going to say Radiohead are overrated... it is not that they are not a very good band, they are. But they are considered by music critics the best band out there, and they just aren't the best band out there. They made one ridiculously good album in Ok Computer and then refused to tackle following it so they just did a 180 and went pretentious on us, releasing things that no one in their right mind would sit through and listen over and over again, they are things that one listens, says "ah that is good" and then never listen to it again... so that cant be the best band out there.

as for underrated bands. I am going to say Joe Strummer and the Mezcaleros mainly because no one knows about anything Strummer did after the Clash. And while the Mezcaleros are no Clash, they are def. a very good band.

Completely agree about Radiohead. Regardless of how good the are, they are overrated. But The Bends was great and In Rainbows is a wonderful return to form. They did seem to duck following up Ok Computer for a while though, great point.

In my view I will classy underated bands as bands that were actually very good, but are not considered dominating great bands, and will classify the overated bands as bands who are reguarded as great and dominant, but who really don't have that much good content.

Underated: The Little River Band, Soundgarden, Heart, The Kinks

Overated: The Doors, Pearl Jam, Kiss, Blink 182,
