Egnew is not a bust, he is a 3rd rd pick. And Egnew is not an Ireland pick. That whole draft was governed by new team philosophy and new coaches. Not a single pick in that draft is an Ireland pick.
Ireland regained control the following year which was his last.

well most of his busts have been purged away, Egnew and Thomas are next, Dallas Thomas will probably follow soon after. Sturgis could be on the outs as well.

Odrick is JAG, but not a bust, if we lost him to free agency most of us wouldn't lose a wink of sleep, trading down from 12 to 28 cost us bigtime that year. Clay was obviously a nice find.

I think you severely underrate Odrick. Over the last few seasons he's really turned into a damn good player.

You missed the point. These are players you said were busts. And now you're saying they are not busts. Odrick is not JAG. He's a very good pass rushers in a passing league. Clay was a nice find. These are guys who took the next step..in their third year. Daniel Thomas is a bust, but not Egnew. It's not looking good for him. He might not even make the roster. If he doesn't then he would be a bust.

Never called Odrick or Clay busts. Before his breakout year someone asked if Clay was a good player, up to that point he wasn't, so I said no.

I keep waiting for Odrick to be better, should I stop?, imo this year is an audition year for a contact that he may want.

So, you think Ireland just agreed in 2012 to give up the final say on the draft picks and let the coaches decide?

I totally agree. To call Odrick a JAG is stupid.

When he lines up at DT it is not stretch. As a 4-3 DE such as he was often used in 2012, he was totally miscast.

Damn good means better than good?..... Not better than good imo..I would say pretty good player, which is not as good as good, relatively speaking.

I don't know if you saw it, but I asked you last week if you saw anything in Odrick over the whole offseason and preseason that seems a bit off?

In the off season, I have no way of seeing much of him at all. In the first two preseason games he's looked fine to me.

Damn good, pretty good, good...is there an official order for those terms? All, I know is, when Odrick lines up at DT, I have few if any complaints about his performance. When he played RDE in 2012, that was a square peg in a round hole it seemed to me. Typical of Coyle when it comes to misusing front 7 guys. Besides Odrick at 4-3 RDE in 2012, we had Wheeler at Will instead of Sam in 2013, we had Jordan as a 4-3 DE instead of OLB in 2013. The way he has been used so far, it looks like a mistake that we even drafted Jordan at all.

    100% agree.^

People always have to have someone to complain about right? I would assume everyone here would say that Ndamukong Suh is at least a good, if not great DT. Just looking at some stats from last season.. Odrick had 2 less solo tackles than Suh, 6 less total tackles, and 1 less sack. So Suh's not your flavor.. let's look at Gerald McCoy (who just whooped our OL last week) then. Odrick had 1 less solo tackle, 7 less total tackles, and 4.5 less sacks.. and that guy is one of the best. I'm not saying Jared Odrick is the best DT out there, but he is far from a JAG.. saying that is just ignorant. He continues to get better every season and that's with splitting time too.

I might add he has the best sack celebration in the game. [IMG]

Suh also has way more personal fouls, suspensions and kicks to opposing players than Odrick.

Depends on the inflection used on "pretty". You could say that's a pretty good play and mean almost good or you could say that's a pretty good play meaning even better than good. But if you add pretty before damn good it always means even better than damn good.

Why does this remind me of a Mike Francesca debate?

Semantics aside, I'm not sure we can have too many complaints about Odrick. He's not a dominant player, but he's pretty good.

It's funny how many posts get hijacked here....we should have an "I want to argue about something" section specifically for that. Then people who actually want to talk about football can do so without all the spam and hate.

Getting back on point, I think Egnew does not make the roster. Thomas, on the other hand, is still probably up in the air since Williams has shown something so far in camp. Thomas is the largest RB and his blocking has improved though, so he looks like the best fit for this offense.

I think Egnew will make the team.

He's done too well blocking to not make it. He might literally be the best blocker on the team thus far, and they KNOW with his athleticism that if they get the ball in his hands he can do things.

They're not going to give up on that, IMO. If he were still a terrible blocker I'd agree with those saying he'd be cut. But he's pretty consistent now. Even just look at the 3 plays where he blocked last weekend, he did well.

One of the most overused lines of argument on this forum is that so-and-so would probably be picked up by the Patriots and made into a successful player.

That said due to the Patriots' specific needs and what they value, it really wouldn't surprise me at all if they put a claim on Egnew.
