Based on Philbin's opinion of having Marino at practice tells me Marino is more of a insider/snitch about what's going right and what's going wrong. Adivsor on rifts in the locker room and front office. If he's not accepted in the locker room and if people start getting quiet when he comes in the room, it won't last long and he'll step down.

I think quite a few people are overcomplicating this. He is being hired to work with Ross and Garfinkel, not with either the coaching or personnel departments. I don't think there is any evidence to suggest he will be involved with coaching or personnel decisions. He appears to be helping Garfinkel with the business side, and he will of course be a resource for Ross to talk to if Ross wants to discuss his thoughts on how the team is progressing.

To be such a resource, it actually benefits all involved if Marino stays separate. Ross needs someone who is free to speak his mind, and whose job isn't on the line regarding football decisions. Last year when Ross arrived back in Miami (where he isn't based) the picture regarding what was going on with the team was given to Ross by people whose jobs may have motivated them to give different narratives about what was occurring. If Marino becomes involved in coaching or personnel on a more formal basis, he just becomes another voice in the existing crowd, and the specific benefit as an advisor to Ross is lost.

If this role is helping Marino prepare for another job in the future, that job may actually be as a part of or head of the next ownership group when the time comes. I think that is where he fits. Give Marino some credit, he may be well aware of what he is and isn't suited to do. He is adored by a lot of fans, and he may well not want to risk that by taking a position that could tarnish that view. I doubt he ever wants to be the one in line to be fired if things aren't going well.

So, what? All we can go on is the information the public can reasonably have. Based on what we know and are in a position to go off of, it's quite possible that Marino is dumb, foul-tempered, and poorly behaved. Prioritizing his ability to throw a football over that would be a huge mistake, and given the track record of the decision making process within this franchise, entirely possibly.

Considering the nature of the quarterback position, I believe it's incumbent on a person claiming Dan Marino put together a Hall of Fame career as one of the quarterbacks that revolutionized the position, yet somehow doesn't know the game very well, to prove their case.

People have this completely naive, ignorant notion in their mind that the guy could practically go out there without having studied film and have a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback...the notion of which doesn't even pass the laugh test.

He knew the game well enough to diagnose defenses and find their weaknesses within split seconds. But to hear it from some people the guy practically slept through all film sessions and showed up to games drunk.

I would trust his quarterback evaluations a hell of a lot more than Carl Peterson's.

I know that during his brief stint with the Dolphins in 2004 he was at the Senior Bowl to study the quarterbacks and came away with a mancrush on Phil Rivers. At the time, Rivers wasn't even considered a 1st round pick by many. Take that for what it's worth.

I think that's very interesting because the aesthetes among evaluators (Greg Cosell among them) could not get over Rivers' throwing motion and perceived lack of arm strength. Dan Marino, who supposedly put together a Hall of Fame career at the most cerebral athletic position perhaps in all of sports by being all arm talent and no brains or feet, recognized traits in Phil Rivers that he really liked despite the perception among many that Rivers' throwing motion and lack of velocity constituted insurmountable arm talent oriented deficiencies.

That Senior Bowl was also the beginning of the end for Danny's tenure.

Joe Rose talked about it at the time, Marino was supposed to be the boss, but Spielman and Wanny treated him like a nuisance. Spielman even mentioned at the Senior Bowl that he had given Marino a "few assignments", like he was some gopher.

The game he knows is vastly different than the game an administrator is playing.

The big problem I have with the hire is this; what exactly is Dan Marino the most qualified person to do?

Is it evaluating players? If so, is Dan Marino the best possible person available for Stephen Ross to hire? I have a hard time believing that there isn't someone else on this earth that Ross could have hired to advise him on personnel matters, who is better than Marino.

Is it evaluating administration? I have a hard time believing that Marino is qualified to do that.

Is it to lure potential coaches/GMs here? I just can't see a Jim Harbaugh coming to Miami because Dan Marino sold him on it. I think these guys are smart enough to make their decisions based on the fundamentals of the situation. Is Dan Marino adding something to the fundamental equation? I would think its just as likely to be a negative - the coach now has to answer to the owner, as well as Dan Marino. Will prospective coaches be worried about friction with Marino? Could anyone ever win a public dispute with Marino?

Is it to gain credibility with fans? This is really the only thing that I can say Dan Marino is the best man for the job. He's the best player in team history, and almost unanimously revered. This is a team that just hired a new GM, and really has no excitement around the GM. That is very rare. The organization has no credibility with its fans. Dan Marino can (and apparently has) instantly changed that. This isn't just for strictly football moves. This is for everything the organization does.

One of the things I think that has been largely ignored is that they specifically said Marino is advising Ross AND Garfinkle. That doesn't strike me as someone who will be focused solely on football. That strikes me as someone who is focused just as much on marketing as anything else. It makes perfect sense to. From what we know about Stephen Ross, he's the type that will try to build a vast team of people that are supremely qualified in particular areas, and rely on them to excel in those areas while working with others. Dan Marino in a broad role doesn't fit that. Dan Marino as the face of the franchise, holding press conferences about new initiatives, talking up new hires, etc. absolutely fits that.
