But in Lazor's debut against the New England Patriots, a 33-20 Dolphins victory, we found out a couple things: scheme still matters, and Miami's attack is indeed being infused with some of the elements that made the Eagles so successful in Kelly's first year.

    Inside Zone

Despite trailing 20-10 at halftime, Miami stuck with a rushing attack that piled up 191 yards on the ground on 38 attempts (5.0 yards per carry). In 2013, the Dolphins averaged 21.8 rushing attempts per game (29th in the NFL) and 90 rushing yards (26th).

In Week 1, the ground game sparked a run of 23 unanswered points after halftime as the Dolphins scored on five of seven possessions. Moreno finished with 134 yards, the third-highest total of his career. And a large chunk of those came on the same play being run over and over.

"We knew going into the game that we wanted to run a lot of inside zone," Philbin told reporters afterwards.

Added Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork: "Everything they did we knew. They didn't trick us. We thought we had a good game-plan for it and obviously we didn't."

The inside zone is a run play that serves as the foundation of the Eagles' offense. And if the first game is any indication, the same will be said about the Dolphins' offense this season.

So...my question is this. It would seem with our personnel, we are set up perfectly to run the inside zone allot. What kind of defenses present an issue to the inside zone?

I thought the key to that game was indeed the team's commitment to the run, even down 20-10, and Knowshon Moreno's response, as opposed to panicking and putting the game on Ryan Tannehill's shoulders.

Lazor and Moreno won that game, aided by the offensive line and the defense. Tannehill managed the game well enough in the second half not to undermine their efforts and lose it himself.

I shudder to think how the game might've gone had Mike Sherman been making the calls, and putting the game on Ryan Tannehill's shoulders in customary fashion.

The first thing I'd say is, since the Pats showed a lot of 3 fronts w down linemen I want to see how we approach a four front.

Does the same approach work as effectively with all the blocking changed?

Or is Lazor smart enough to use something different but equally effective in his scheme to handle 4 fronts.

    Tell ya after tomorrow's game.

Well..thats a great question. Can we still run inside zone against 4 man fronts?

Against four-man fronts, I would have to think Clay would be far more active. Remember that Belichick's gameplan last year was to remove Clay, and I have to think it wasn't much different last Sunday. We just responded with the run and were successful. If a team counters with four-man fronts, we'll have to counter with Clay and be successful with that, as well.

Clay would of had a long TD if he just kept his balance in the one play, he was behind the defense, shoestring got him.

So what you guys are saying is that the get 5.0 YPC zone offense that has been around for ages should actually be used (Denver zone). It amazes me why more teams don't go with this approach. It's not like it hasn't won SBs or that it's a regular season pony. It's just most teams that have it, haven't had a good passing game.

That statement from Wilfork just shows how bad they were beaten. I mean, if you know what's coming and STILL can't stop it...ALL GAME...ouch.

Looking back at the highlights, it's the OL that really just put a beating on N.E.

They had no idea how to control all of the gaps, it was just too hard to do it.

Chip Kelly's offense is going 90 MPH every single play, Chip wants to run 70 offensive plays per game.

Lazor's is a bit different, he will run the conventional offense but still call solid plays, and then he will surprise the defense with the up tempo when he thinks it's time to mix it up.

But they still base everything for the most part on inside zone...thats what gives us so many options

Scheme matters. Poor coaches will tell you that all that matters is talent. What matters is how you use the talent you have. The Dolphins have had more than enough talent the last two seasons to win the division. Poor use of that talent was the failure.

And now we got the right scheme....for our talent.
