So if you were Philbin, and your entire coaching career revolved around the next 15 weeks, you would be thinking about "the future of the Dolphins"? Because with another 8-8 season, Philbin likely doesn't have a future as a head coach.
I don't think it is a matter of loving the backup QB. Moore has already started games for this team in 2011 and he was teams MVP after that season. He has proved that he can be a starting QB in the NFL, even if he isn't much more than a mediocre starting QB. Eventually it is going to come down to Philbin having to decide which QB will give him the best chance to save his job. He can always go to Ross and tell him that it was Ireland who wanted to draft Tannehill and not him. If Ross buys this, I can see Philbin going with Moore if the season starts going south with Tannehill at QB. This might be the only way for Philbin to try and save his job if the Dolphins once again fail to make the playoffs this season.
For all we know he did plan on trying to establish the run but when Moreno went down on his first carry it threw a monkey wrench into everything, we were not going to win that game running Miller. Would like to see Williams and Darkwa get some chances while Moreno is out.
He's not going to have a future either if his job depends on Moore, he's a fine backup but that's where it ends with him, put Moore in starting next week you might as well just write us in for 6-8 wins and that gets Philbin canned. His best chance is Tannehill to finally get it together and go to the next level.
He was third last week and worst this week barring Smith destructing from hereon out. That's not a good start.
It's not debatable. His 79.9 qb rating put him third. Now he's the worst. It's not overreacting. It's the truth. Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
Moore won 6 games in 9 on a crap team. Moores biggest problem is that he usually gets his chance too late in the year.
I completely agree, but how do you do that in a week or two when you haven't been able to over the past 2 seasons? While I'd love to see Tannehill blossom and become the long-term answer, I just don't think it's logical to expect for that to happen QUICKLY at this point. And Philbin definitely needs quick. I'm not saying that Moore is the long-term answer though; I'm saying that he's the best short-term answer to get us into the draft and free agency. If you go 8-8 under Tannehill and we're still a bottom-tier offense, then I think Philbin is gone. If you get the same results, or maybe slightly better, under our backup because Ireland over-reached on Tannehill, then you might get another season and a draft to work with.
Let's put this in perspective? the other night we all watched Ben look like a total bum. He hasn't thrown a td in six quarters, yet I have seen many on this board say how great he is? Do you think they should Start Gradkowski or focus on making the Team better?
I think I'm shifting more to the mindset that Miami doesn't have a real answer at QB. Tannehill is way too inconsistent and I just don't think he's all there mentally in terms of football IQ and nuances of the game. Moore is average and not a long-term answer. Too bad Sparano and Bowles eeked out wins in 2011.
Definition of "crazy". Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. In this case, it is the expectation that Tannehill will take his game to the next level. That is just crazy thinking. He is what he is. A very mediocre NFL QB who will win you a few games each each with a solid game. He will also lose you games by his inconsistent play. So when all is said and done, he is a mediocre QB who will lead his team to a mediocre record. If you are satisfied with mediocre, Tannehill is your QB. If you want a playoff caliber QB who can get this team to a SB in the coming years, I just don't see Tannehill being that QB.
Moore may be average but that doesn't mean you don't try to win games. At least try to get the fan base back. If average by the way is a 88-90 QB rating then you definitely make that move.
The problem is Moore isn't that guy either, if Tanny isn't it then we don't have one on the roster right now and thats the problem.
Yeah I suggest you read my posts on Tannehill today and you will see how critical I am of him today. I'm not defending him but I'm speaking from the mindset of Philbin if you followed my conversation I was with the OP, if Tannehill don't succeed this season Philbin is toast. Putting Moore in to save his job is crazy, his only hope to save his job falls squarely on Tannehill.
Right now, yes. If Tannehill is still laying eggs a month from now it could be a different story. Everybody knows Matt Moore isn't the long term answer but all Philbin needs is a guy who can get him a wild card berth so he can survive to hunt for a long term QB solution in the offseason.
Tannehill is Philbin's call as much as Ireland even if a Ireland made the call, you don't go three years making someone your starter and blame it on someone who isn't even there anymore. Fair or not Philbin's job relies on the success of 2014 Tannehill.
I agree, if they are 1-4 and Tannehill is getting worse you got to gamble. But my guess is he will rebound some before that, I think he can throw against both the Chiefs and Raiders.
People, RT threw the ball 49 times today plus 4 sacks, that is 53 passing attempts. That playcalling is not gonna cut it. That is stupid! Lazor needs to come back to Earth from planet Stupid, and then we can talk about what to do with RT.
I think that's needed for Philbin to retain his job which is why he might yank Tannehill later in the season [but not too late] if it doesn't look like he can make that happen. I think it will take some pretty poor performances but it's definitely within the realm of possibility IMO. They can't afford to let the team hit 2-5 or something like that.
I don't want to get into team politics at this point, but that is EXACTLY what happened this off-season when it came to Sherman and the whole bullying scandal. I agree with you that Tannehill is linked to Philbin in ways that cannot be broken, but I still say that wins overcome almost anything else in this league. If Moore played today, in the exact offense with the exact line problems, I believe that he generates more points. Do we win...probably not...but Miami had tons of chances today and came up short. Then again, we lingered within reach for 3 1/2 half quarters of football...and a big score in any of those offensive drives would have made this feel like a completely different game. There was no excitement in the huddle and no sense of urgency out there though, and a lot of that falls on the tempo that the QB sets. You saw how fired up the line got when Moreno broke a few big tackles last week, and Moore's leadership skills have been proven several times over. So at the end of the day, I think Philbin is going to be judged more on winning and progress than what happens to Tannehill. And again, for the record, I root for Tannehill with everything that I have inside me...it's not that I want him to fail. He has failed though, and something has to happen quickly to change that. Really though; I hope you're right. Next week should present a lot of opportunities to move the ball downfield, and I'd love nothing more than to see Tannehill throw for 400 yards and 5 TD's. I'm just not expecting it.
I really do think you're putting more stock into Moore than he's worth, if our season is depending him we're doomed, that's just my personal opinion.
I've followed Moore his entire career and he's never really been given a fair chance to take the helm. He was great in Carolina until he had 2 concussions, and his comeback tour in Miami a few seasons ago was impressive as well. You have to remember, there were many people on this forum that strongly opposed Tannehill starting two years ago, because Moore was such a great leader on the field. Even the players fought for him...and that speaks volumes. That was possibly the worst Dolphins team in the past decade and he went 6-3; that's pretty darn tough to ignore. I just find it ironic the way that people say, "Moore is no good," even though he's never started a full season. When Tannehill proves average over two season though, we hear, "Tannehill is still developing, so he's the obvious choice over Moore." It makes no sense though- look at Tannehill's first nine games vs Moore's 9 games....or multiply Moore's stats out to equal Tannehill's 34 starts. Either way, Moore is ahead by a landslide.
Hey, guess what? So have I, have seen Moore play plenty of times and enough to know at best he's a game manager and right now our offense is not geared to support a backup QB like that, our running game at the moment is very suspect now Moreno could be out up to two months. And I've said Moore is a better leader than Tannehill and if he continues to struggle 4-6 games into the season I would be ok with bringing in Moore but I'm also not going to be confident about our chances to rebound.
Tannehill doesn't have the accuracy and never will IMO. You either have it or you don't. I've seen enough. I'm ready for Moore. Flat out he gives us a better chance to win IMO. He has his own flaws and limitations, but he's an aggressive leader who will cash in on the opportunities RT isn't. I've had my fill of RT wasting Mike Wallace's best asset. He can't handle the Ferrari. Moore can. We'll be drafting our next franchise QB hopeful next year. In the meantime, the team deserves Moore. He's proven he can play in this league. - sent via Tapatalk -
Moore doesn't really have a major limitation. He's nothing exceptional but there isn't anything so glaring as say I can't hit a screen pass to slow down the rush.
It's my belief that the Phins hang 50 on New England and are more competitive today with Matt Moore at QB. Simply put, he's not missing the gimme scores Ryan is. - sent via Tapatalk -
You know what bothers me is that the team is constantly pressing to find a QB. Stop trying to find a QB and forcing draft picks at guys that are not worthy of that pick. This team's best success over the past decade and a half has been through guys that have cost the team nothing. In 2005 had the opportunity to draft Rodgers they pass. In 2008 they have a chance at Ryan they pass, then they spew a pick at Henne, they pick Tannehill. Stop trying to draft a QB. Draft a franchise QB if there is a franchise QB. Moore will hit Wallace deep every couple of games. Marshall had his best year here because of him, not Henne.
In preseason, Matt Moore throws a pick six and actually starts laughing on the field. No anger, no panic...just a good, hard laugh and he jogs off the field. On the very next play though (after the kickoff), he completes a perfect 45+ yard throw in a very narrow window. Then does it twice more in the 4th quarter. In a nutshell, that's Matt Moore. He gambles, keeps the huddle energized, and shrugs off failure like it didn't happen. One day he may score 50, and the next he could have 4 picks...but he plays fearless and his teammates love him for it. Does he have some downside? Sure, but he also has incredible upside when the day goes his way.
