Last year Sturgis was fairly consistent in kicking the ball deep into the endzone or through the endzone on kickoffs. Since suffering his hamstring injury in preseason, Sturgis hasn't seemed to have as much distance on kickoffs this season.
I don't think the kick was as big of an issue as the coverage was. Sturgis has a strong enough leg. The Bills carry a kickoff specialist b/c Carpenter's leg is light, but I don't want Miami to waste a roster spot on that.
Not a fan of Sturgis...those painful misses last year play a part in that opinion...I'm part of the pack that would have preferred to keep Carpenter.
He is 20th of 35 this year in average distance, and has the 5th highest pct returned. It's incorrect to say he never kicks it out of the end zone, but he sure could be better at it.
It just seems that most other kickers kick it out of the end zone. Just saying. No chance for a run back.
Not those particular numbers though. Average distance of his kicks, not average distance they are returned, is what I was referring to.
