Jason Cole: Dan Marino Unhappy with Philbin

I would hope that Marino's opinion about Philbin could be heard 3 states away as he was voicing it. Philbin started out as a bad HC and he has gotten steadily worse. If Dan isnt screaming at Ross to fire Philbin to stop the bleeding then he is not doing his job either and should go too.

You'd have to figure that Marino would never sit on the ball with 3 timeouts and 2:30 left in the half, I agree with CK, that would end with Marino either in jail or on another team. I think the Philbin era is coming to an end, he's looking more and more like a coach that doesn't have a clue how to run the entire team. His gameplans suck, his clock management sucks, his player development is mediocre at best, he shows no leadership during the Martin soap opera and now he's throwing his Qb under the bus. I'll give him credit if he can turn things around but I have no faith in that happening.

It's not premature to think Philbin sucks as a coach, he's been here over 2 years and hasn't done a god damn thing other than get embarrassed on and off the field.

No, that was a good win. However, we've played 6 halves of football and have been embarrassed in 5 of them. Yeah he coached up a good half of football against the Pats. Aside from that its been turnovers, penalties, bad play calling and terrible game planning. If winning 1 out of every 6 halves of football makes you good then we should start putting together his ring of honor plaque.

 

At the end of the day this really doesn't matter.

Not when that team went to the AFC Championship game following their defeat to us, and we lost to two below .500 division opponents in embarrassing fashion to miss the playoffs.

And this year will be similar. They'll be in the playoffs and we won't be, and week 1 will be a distant memory. Nothing more.

 

Yeah I saw the games too and nothing I've seen on the field is more embarrassing than hearing fans ready to quit the season after three games.

Just so everyone knows, Rex did it, Harbaugh did it (the Baltimore one), Coughlin did it, Schottenheimer did it, Dungy beat him 3 in a row, Shanahan beat him 3 in a row. Put Philbin in the mix, and it might be apparent that one of those is not like the others. (hint, it's the only one with a sub 500 record)

You would think after bullygate and blowing a playoff spot that was handed to Miami on a silver platter, one of the "easiest" (swept by 6-win last place Buffalo and lost to winless Bucs, plus the Jets finale...just winning 1 of those 4 was all they needed) years for a playoff spot ever, would have spelled the end.

I agree. And, was Marino helping Tannehill all along? Or just recently? If its the latter maybe he can give Tannehill some much needed helpful pointers.

 

I love Dan but you know things are ****ed up when he's a voice of reason.

 

Not when it comes to the game on the field. Theres this perception that Dan Marino is a meat head or something..and hes not. Hes ULTRA competitive and wears it on his sleave..

 

Again, no offense to Dan, but most moderately knowledgeable football fans should be able to see a lot of the blatant issues w this team.

But hey if it takes Dan and his pedigree to make Ross axe some of these clowns then no complaints here.

 

I think some of what Dan may be trying to get RT17 to do is to just play loose...thats why when Ryan is in the hurry up..he seems like a diff qb. He cant think..he just goes..

 

I can't imagine that if he wants the team to win, Marino can be happy with the play of Ryan Tannehill right now. He might not be happy with Philbin, either, but this shouldn't be framed as an "either-or" between Philbin and Tannehill, as if one has to choose to be unhappy with one or the other of them. It's entirely possible Marino thinks Tannehill will never become an adequate QB in the NFL, who knows?

 

Based on what we saw on Sunday, I fully believe that this team needs both a new head coach and a new quarterback.

Which is really disechanting.

 

If a HC such as Marc Trestman was available, a true QB maker/fixer, then I think Tannehill is salvageable.

Could Harbaugh be that? could Malzahn?

 

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Marino wouldn't have liked "the decision." It also shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Marino and Philbin probably wouldn't see eye to eye on a lot of things.

Philbin needs to continue to make what he feels like are the correct decisions and not give Dan Marino's feelings a second thought.

 

I tend to agree about Tannehill but if we have a really high pick we might have to pick another Qb, depends on the way the draft falls and where we pick. Either way I think barring a huge turn around we are picking a Qb in the first 2 or 3 rounds for sure in next years draft.

 

The other thing, and I think teams like Seattle, Minnesota, and even Cleveland have figured this out before everyone else, is that the new CBA makes redrafting a QB in the first round much easier. In the past, stiffs like Bradford got mountains of money, but now it's not nearly as much of an investment to bail out on a guy after a couple of years.

Unless you've got a guy who is playing at a Top 5, maybe Top 10 level, you keep drafting, and drafting early. Until you get it right. When was the last time we saw a franchise QB come out of free agency? Drew Brees? Even that was lucky. If you want a good QB, you have to go through the draft - and, given the new CBA rules, you play him early, plug him in, and use the savings to get some weapons around him. Look at the teams that are being successful this year and last year - all have QBs who are on very moderate or rookie deals, which has allowed them to make the team around them better.

That's the type of bold approach that Miami has never taken. They've tried to get by with mediocre retreads and half-hearted attempts at finding one. If you want to find a QB, you're going to have to hit on one in the draft. Period.

 

Would Dan do this if he did not believe Tanny had the potential to be a good starter? Putting you on the spot, I know it would just be opinion.
