I wouldn't be surprised if we draft Jameis Winston next year, he's the kind of guy this franchise needs and this owner wants. He'll give the entire organization and fan base the major shot in the arm that they need.

From your keyboard to God's eyes.

Brees is interesting in this discussion because he did nothing as an NFL QB until the Chargers drafted his replacement high in the first round. He might be an example of someone who got a fire lit under him. IIRC, I think the Chargers did everything right in that scenario, it was just bad luck that Brees got hurt in his last game there. I'm assuming they might have gotten something for him in trade if he had been unhurt and franchised.

IMHO, with the leadership in place with this team, they need a boy scout like Luck or Wilson, not a kid who is still figuring out who he is.

Does anyone know when they have to decide on Tannehill from a fiscal standpoint? Other then loosing out on another player..its not that much of a cap burden to take a QB in the first round and pay Ryan Tannehill what hes worth is it?

Garopolo makes as much sense as Landry.

Tannehill is still cheap next year. The year after that is his option year, and I think his option is a little high for the way he's playing now.

You should always have at least two QBs on the roster with the potential to be great. In 2011 we had none which forced us to reach in the first round. And right now we have none. That was a huge blunder by Philbin and Hickey.

I guess from a strictly football sense Id have to agree...but gotta say that guy seems like trouble just waiting to happen..I know ..Ive heard all the its just a kid being a kid..but still. I guess Dan Marino was quite the partier as well and that turned out pretty good...really I could live with his other stuff if the rape stuff never happened

I am all for knuckleheads getting a chance to make themselves right, but I'm not sure the Dolphins are the right organization for that at the moment. It probably wouldn't be good for the team or the player.

Well, but Marino also has to realize that Philbin isn't working with Marino at QB. I hope Marino isn't so self-centered that he superimposes his situation as a player onto Philbin's situation with Tannehill. My lord! :)

Not sure if the regret should be Jimmy Garoppolo. I mean, I liked him as well and I suppose if he turns out great I'll feel bad.

But you could certainly make the case that they should have taken Teddy Bridgewater at 19. Part of me still can't believe he fell that far.

I know, everyone thinks yeah but then we wouldn't have gotten our right tackle Ja'Wuan James. Hey I liked Ja'Wuan James more than most, but you can find a right tackle if you need a right tackle. You don't get a Teddy Bridgewater slipping to your grasp in the mid to late 1st round all that often.

My issue with Winston is...how do we know he will be able to handle himself with some sense after he has all the Millions in the bank..

Whole thing was overblown. And the pro day should be like 0.01% of the evaluation. It's mostly just a chance for high profile personalities to be seen together and to yuck it up, circle jerk, etc.

There's so much game tape of Teddy Bridgewater telling you how good he is. Hey if I'm proven wrong I'll own that, as I always do, but the guy was a high quality quarterback prospect.

It's looking to me like Philbin is the big distraction here, that lets us put out of our minds for a moment the fact that the first, first-round QB to be drafted since Dan Marino isn't looking good in his all-important third year, like most thought he would. The fact that Marino "endorses" that distraction only makes it more helpful. The fanbase is crestfallen, but having a more fixable distraction makes it easier to bear.

Just as worried as you are. But I usually don't get too itchy about that stuff until I see a connection between a guy's off-field behavior and his work ethic/football intelligence. Thus far with Winston, that connection doesn't exist. He cares about intellectual football and has from an early age. I don't know if he gets coked up with pikes, if he has a problem with acting out for attention, or has no regard for the idea that stealing is wrong. I suspect the truth of those matters is much more banal than the scandalous headlines. If I caught word that he's slacking in football practice, studies, etc...or if he starts reading the field poorly or looking under-prepared, looking like he just wants to be flying by the seat of his pants and making plays with his own ability instead of operating an offense...then you've got me worried. Haven't seen that...YET.

The decision that was made not to bring in competition for Tannehill is the one decision that could eventually sink Philbin for good. It's clear to me with the way he's coaching that he doesn't believe in Tannehill but has no other option behind him other than more mediocrity.

I am willing to see how he handles himself following this suspension. But I just witnessed him not being able to process his actions off the field and have those directly impact his ability to be on the field. Now, he probably thought "they would never suspend me". But he was wrong. And it is a red flag that he continued to push the envelope on antics that lead to a suspension of play.

but again, if he shows otherwise going forward - sad that it took a suspension to be a wake up call - fine. But part of me doesn't believe he wont make another mistake (easily avoidable ones) going forward.

I know it says Marino is working with Tanne, which is great, but I wish we heard more about what he thinks of Tanne as a QB in general and going forward.

Actually that decision could be more likely to sink Dennis Hickey.

Joe Philbin's fate was likely hung up on Ryan Tannehill from the start.

But I'm starting to wonder...if the coaches evaluation of Ryan Tannehill was such that he could be strongly considered for benching after Week 3, with a 74 passer rating while his receivers drop a ton of balls and run their routes incorrectly...then this dude was on such thin ice to begin with that you absolutely NEEDED to bring in another young quarterback to compete.

I don't get this view....Tannehill showed growth from year 1 to year 2, plus with an OL that gave up a Career's worth of sacks, plus we had Moore, a solid backup QB that should only be viewed as an option if Tannehill is injured (just like RGIII with Cousins in DC).

Wasting a first rd on a QB would and should have been blasted. Would take James over Bridgewater everday of the week.

Tannehill hasn't shined in year 3, that doesn't equate to stock piling first rounders of QB. Not even Seattle did that, granted they got very lucky, just like NE did with Brady, but still its not 1st rounders...that's panic mode.

If you believe Harbaugh or Malzahn or the next Trestman could take Tannehill and win a Superbowl...then its not the problem. Its coaching #1. Tell me instead of using first rounder on James, you trade it to SF to get Harbaugh, fine I buy in. Anything other than that, is 20-20 hindsight Monday morning QBing.

And I am on record that says until Ross gives up ownership, no proper decision will be made.

Depends on how bad the mistakes are. If we're talking about mistakes that get you arrested? That's bad. If we're talking about mistakes that maybe get you in the papers for the wrong reasons? Not so bad. People say that once these kids get money they go downhill but the opposite can be true as well. Once they get money they don't want to lose it. And getting arrested is a QUICK way to lose a sh-t ton of money (ask Ray Rice).

Like I said, I'm not going to obsess about that stuff until/unless I see it affect his football character. A suspension qualifies if I agree with the suspension. In this case, I most certainly do not. Kid jumped on a table and shouted a meme that is being pranked in exactly the same way on a hundred college campuses across the country. Let him be a 19 year old idiot. Suspend him for the crab thing, but also keep in mind what probably happened (or so I've heard from a source that has no skin in the game) is that FSU players have the hookup from some of the floor managers at that Publix and the floor manager on duty that day was not aware of the hookup.

Oh..I wasnt worried bout that as much as being worried he'll find himself in another rape allegation..or in some kind of disciplinary problem where he gets suspended for 6 games..that kind of worried. Honestly Jameis seems like he would be right at home having player meetings at Tootsies

Well he complicates that suspension and made it a full game suspension when he wasnt straight with the coaches

I think it shows you absolutely needed to change HCs. Following bullygate, and blowing the final 2 games to division rivals to knock you out of the playoffs...that's what it shows. Cause, by not changing HC's you get a QB controversy, he made all by himself after week 3 of the next season.

    Can Ross even realize that?

right, because you are isolating this single event, and excluding all the prior events. Trust me, I agree, if this was his very first ever off the field issue, I would be right there with you. In context, no it was just another attempt to do a stupid thing. Added to all his prior, he was clearly under the "I wont get suspended acting the fool".

And as far as what the "hook up" rules were regarding crab legs....its irrelevant in the big picture. That's co-conspirators to a crime, regardless of the "hook up" rules of the day. Come on be serious.

Or maybe someone else said it to the reporter just trying to jerk his chain and it wasn't true to begin with? I thought it was interesting when he said Marino had worked out with Tannehill, but it went downhill from there.

I guess Jimbo Fisher said he suspended Jameis because he felt like that was going to be the only thing that would sink into Jameis that he needs to smarten up. It wasnt so much that he deserved it..but that missing out that one game would sting so bad that he has to realize that as the teams QB and leader..hes held to a different standard.

The WRs have been horrible at running their routes. In this offense you have to run perfect routes..at the right depth..and they have not been.

I am willing to hope indeed that positively impacts him.

so here you have his current HC, acknowledge, something significant had to be done to get through to him. A little to late perhaps...perhaps not. Wake up calls come in all shapes and sizes.
