I've been OK with Philbin until the end of last season, and my philosophy for this year has been "wait and see, and assess at the end of the year". As of right now I think that the best thing the Phins could do to turn around this season is to sack Philbin. I was going to save starting this thread until the bye week, but after what happened today I want this man gone and now.

    1) Tackling and catching. I was never athletic enough to be good at football when I was in school, but I got onto teams because I could tackle. The difference between being a good tackler and not isnt technique or being in the right position it is the willingness to accept physical punishment in order to get the job done. The same goes for catching, its the willingness to open up your body and accept a hit in order to make the catch.
The fact that tackling and catching was poor last season and continues to be poor this season is proof that Philbin has failed in his role as motivator.

    2) Creating a QB controversy this week out of nothing. This is a cowards decision made in a cowardly way. If Moore is the better option name him starter now. I believe that the biggest difference between Tannehill having a decent year and a crappy year so far has been WR drops, but if you as the HC believe it's Tannehills fault then have the balls to bench him yourself. To me the way the decision has been made looks like a coach covering his *** and setting up excuses for his failures.

    3) The bullygate fiasco. Yes he did a good job of bringing the team together after it became public but he says he had no idea it was going on beforehand. There is no explanation for what happened beforehand that shows Philbin in a good light.

    4) The purging of the roster of all players who would question him in his first season. Only weak people need to surround themselves with yes men. I am not saying that all of those players should have been retained but we did throw out some good players because ou coach could not handle them.

    5) The playcalling. I wont call out specific games because that isnt his responsibility, but he has allowed tendencies that we as fans knew were errors to continue without rectification. His job as HC is to oversee the co-ordinators and make them change up when things are not working.

    6) Cowardly coaching. Lots of examples of Philbin not backing his players. For example the end of the first half at Buffalo when we closed up shop rather than try to move the ball downfield.

    7) Lack of pride. When Andy Reid ran up the score at the end on Sunday there was no anger or pride shown by Philbin. His response to the last 2 games last year. I prefer Dungy-like reserved coaches over Ryanesque tantrum throwers, but at some point if you dont project pride in what you are doing your players arent going to either.

Philbin and Sparano are exactly the same. Play not to lose is their way of life.

Fire Philbin, promote Lazor and see what changes Lazor makes.

Fire Philbin, let Lazor run the offense, let Coyle run the defense, and replace Philbin with Sharepoint or OneNote.

I wanted to give Philbin a 3rd year to prove himself, and so far it's not looking good. However, it is still early.

But if this continues he should be fired without hesitation.

At least Sparano seemed like he was being himself, a lot of players supported him, and he coached a team that gave me the only fun/memorable season since I was in junior high. And boy could he rattle off snap counts

This team has the talent and just comes out flat. Philbin doesn't even seem to care. The stadium looks half full to start a season opener against the toughest division rival. Now we're going to do the whole new QB/new coach thing, spending another 3 years rebuilding, getting new players to fit their scheme, switching to a 3-4, etc. It is rough...

This is the thing that's making this year's performance feel even worse. I know that there will be more shuffling of deck chairs, and I'm not confident that it will be more than that.

Poor decisions at the top of the franchise have put us in this position, and only Good decisions can get us out of it. Not sure Ross will have an epiphany and end our misery before the end of the season, but he has to know the grumbling in the masses is starting to turn into a roar. If he ever intends to place a winning team on the field he needs better advice.

Its funny how you never hear the name Petersen anymore

Ross won't make a change till the end of the year. Barring a miraculous turnaround, we'll go sub-500 and then Ross will waste time waffling until all the good candidates have been snatched up, then he'll "accept Philbin's resignation" and we'll get another scrub.

I've tried really hard to support Joe, but I can't anymore. He's a bad coach. It makes me sick to my stomach knowing that we're stuck with him because some 'football etiquette' guidelines say that we can't ****-can a guy if we beat the Raiders (which we probably will).

It seems the best thing that could happen would be for Ross to sell the team. Things have not gotten better since he bought it so he should fire himself.

To be honest I am willing to give Ross a chance.

He is willing to spend money and willing to try to build the best team he can. He is willing to ask for outside help. He also isn't sticking his nose into everything, other than pretty much forcing Philbin to fire Sherman.

He has made a lot of mistakes, however there is no way to learn how to be a good NFL owner than be a NFL owner.

I agree with your all your points especially the tackling and willing to throw yourself in there and take the punishment. But the drops have been less of afraid to take the hit and more due to a lack of concentration. Or perhaps the lack of concentration is due to concern about taking a hit, but it seems like the receivers, like the constant Sean Smith dropped Ints. are due to lack concentration, looking to see what they will do next, or using poor technique.

To elaborate further on point 1, perhaps our receivers and our LBs are just not good enough to do their jobs at a high level. We don't have Jordan Gross type LBs, and Trusnick and Wilson are not starting caliber players at their positions.

My opinion on Philbin has gone from being lukewarm about him and his coaching abilities to now wanting him gone ASAP. I think he's in over his head, and I very much doubt his abilities to lead a team. While I don't think Ross has the stones to do it, if we were to lose to Oakland on Sunday (a very distinct possibility IMHO), that would be the time to pull the trigger.

It could go one of two ways; Either it lights a fire under the team and they play better, or they completely collapse. Both of those scenarios would be preferable to the never-ending cycle of 7-9, 8-8.

Well, it would allow the fan base to tar and feather two scapegoats in one season, Tannehill being the 2nd. You know dolphin fans love their scapegoats. I think rooting for "insert name" Henne, Henning, Sparano, Ireland, Sherman, whoever, to get fired has become more important than rooting for wins.

  26. It would allow the team to openly and aggressively shop for his replacement well ahead of any other teams that will be doing the same at the end of the season

If we go 1-3 and lose to Oakland, there is tremendous value to getting rid of him. Sometimes you can galvanize the team.

For me this has nothing to do with looking for a scapegoat. Sometimes in professional lige you cross a line. Creating a QB controvesy for no good reason shows a complete failing ad a coach. Its up there eith Saban walking over a convulsing Jeno James. It is the sort of thing that irretrievably loses the teams respect for the coach.

Where is Fin D? Haven't seen him in a few days. Hope everything is okay.

Oh wait, didn't he say something about Hawaii? Yeah I'd say F* the dolphins too if I was in Hawaii.

Funny segue. I was in Hawaii for 62-7. Yup. But the game started at 7 am and back then I didn't wake up before 11 on a good day. Force myself to wake up, turn on the TV, and it was like 48-0 or something. Turned it right off, went right back to sleep.

Owners have to worry about more than just results on the field, they have to worry about putting butts in the seats. If the team is circling the drain and fans are staying away in droves and the merch isn't selling, replacing the coach might revive interest.

Fair enough. But only if you believe that Philbin is the one who created the controversy.

From my POV Philbin gave a purposely bland answer to AVOID creating a controversy. If he answers the question this week he'll be getting it again next week, and pretty much every time Tannehill has a less than stellar performance. Instead, he stonewalled and the media types pounced, as they would have no matter what answer he gave. I mean, it was loaded question to begin with, does anyone really think there was a chance of Matt Moore starting?

Yes, I was in Hawaii. Nothing else matters when you're in Hawaii because Hawaii is heaven on earth.

The team is sucking. I don't know why. If Philbin can't turn it around by the end of the season and get this team into the playoffs, then he should be gone and I was wrong this whole time.

However, if the team does get turned around and make it to the playoffs will anyone else admit they were wrong? I dunno.
