Todds post summed it up best for me. I think there is too much placed on instant success. To my eyes tannehill seems to be the third or four best qb to arrive in the last 3 drafts. That's good. We can work with that. There are pearly a great many things working against him on a regular basis. The coaching and play calling is wimpy. The players around him have hindered him for 2 years. If the plan is keep churning and hope for the best then nope, not down with that. Either positively identify the player who is an upgrade and available and go for him or we stick and coach and build. Deej mentioned intensity, does he need a sports psychologist?
He can play. He has serious flaws in his game, but also has serious talent. Some of his flaws are correctable; some aren't. His damned coaches are supposed to correct the correctable flaws and address the uncorrectable ones by putting him in a position to succeed, minimizing his flaws and playing to his strengths. The morons we have don't know how to do that. Tell me again just why Zac Taylor was hired as quarterbacks coach, other than his having been Philbin's mentor Sherman's son in law.
and then traded Alex Smith for a pair of second round picks, essentially recapturing the pick they used on CK (Collin Kapernick not you ) and then some.
So, I thought the options were a little too declarative. I chose option 1. I think Ryan Tannehill should have the rest of the season. I think Ryan Tannehill is an average QB, with skills that are very good and skills that are very poor. The skills that are very poor are what are hindering his ability to be consistent and thus, the offense to run consistently. I believe if Ryan Tannehill is our QB for the next 5 years, we'll eventually make the playoffs. I don't think he's bad enough, but I also think at some point luck will fall our way and get us in. However, I don't think he's good enough and I'm ready to move on. He's not consistent enough. You will never feel good about his ability to play well for an entire season and the next season, etc. So, because of that I'm ready to move onto another option at QB via draft, FA, trade options this offseason.
I say let him play out the season because Matt Moore is no better. But to be honest, I don't think he'll ever be a top-tier QB and I think we should look elsewhere in the offseason.
I don't know about everyone else, but I saw an OL that couldn't produce against GB...That lack of a running game stymied the passing game...Tanny is not an elite QB, but there are quite a few guys out there that are a lot worse than he is right now... Problem is, he'll be the one taking the blame even tho our talent around him is horrid...(OL, RB, TEs, entire defense)... Besides the bottom line in that GB game is that the defense lost that game...It's reprehensible that they gave GB that scoring drive at the end of the game...the O scored enough to win and we should have if not for the lack of defense....
I am at a cross roads here but... I personally think that he has the chance to be a good QB for us, I see too many flashes of above average play (2nd half of the last game) to toss him out of here and I think he can be a good part of a playoff winning team, will he be a top 3 QB or even top 5, probably not but he can be a top 10 but I have no trust that our coaching staff can remove his rough parts to get him there. That to me is the dilemma. However to properly sit on the fence, I will also state I could be wrong!
The talk shows would have focused on Rodgers fumble on that final drive and the stupid decision to fake the snap that cost him the game. They would have compared that to RT's second half and talked of making the plays when it mattered. Winning colors everything so it's not difficult to see that analysis being made.
Carr is a rookie and Davis is a second year guy with a hand full of starts... they get more slack than Tannehill does at this point and we're not talking about the team, we're talking about QB play and growth. What really sucks is that Austin Davis was on our Practice Squad last season and we lost him due to Philbin's love affair with Pat Devlin. With better coaches, we could have had a situation similar to RG3/Cousins with 2 young guys competing/pushing each other. Right now both Carr and Davis are making NFL throws and showing positive growth and adjustment this season. Carr drove the field against us and scored and just hit a 77 yard TD last game. As for Davis' "arm" - on attempts 20-plus yards downfield, he’s completed 50 of 85 passes for 630 yards with 3 touchdowns - all over 30+ passing yards. His 58.8 completion percentage on deep throws ranks 3rd in the NFL. Tannehill is 45 of 86 for 454 yards and a 52.8 completion percentage, and has YET to complete a pass thrown over 30 yards in the air despite his stronger arm. Davis has completed 4 of 8 for 50% of his deep thrown passes. Davis has a higher completion percentage, higher average, higher QBR, higher passer rating, and more yards. Tannehill has thrown 1 more TD. Davis has faced Dallas, Philly, and the 9ers and still had 2 games where he threw for 320+ yards and 3 TDs. As stated, Tannehill has the rest of this season and likely next season as well before we can find someone to either push him or replace him. I don't think a a single Dolphins fan wants to have to go through the pains of replacing him, but right now his play is too erratic and he is leaving too many plays and points on the field to be viewed a viable long term answer. Hope the light that sometimes flickers on for Tannehill finally comes on and stays on. To Todd's point, go back and look at Griese and Morrall. Neither were very good until after their 4th/5th+ seasons. Hard to be that patient in today's game where so many of the rules are now canted towards the passing game.
The post I was responding to specifically said that those guys were outplaying Ryan Tannehill. They aren't. You can talk about slack and expectations, and that's fine and I won't disagree, but the actual statement that I rebutted simply wasn't a reflection of reality.
I don't watch talk shows, and I'm not sure how talk shows could really change what happens on the field.
I think this is a talented team with poor execution and poor gameplanning. The bigger problems fall on scheme and coaching. Failing to adapt to strengths, failing to be prepared, etc. Our defense is very good - slight tweaks to the secondary and LB core and its one of the greatest in the league IMO. Of course, offense is a bigger problem than defense right now - and I think its largely for the aforementioned coaching issues. I think drafting a QB in the later rounds is fine. I dont want one in the first 3ish, certainly not first 2 rounds. We need some playmakers and impact players early in the draft. I'm okay giving RT the short term keys to the kingdom IF some front office changes happen.
Tannehill hasn't given me a reason to believe that he CANT be a good QB. I feel like I am completely alone feeling that way. He's in no way a bottom tier QB and we can win with him, but we need a complete team around him. I remember Joe Flacco catching heat a few years ago the same way Tannehill is right now. He won a super bowl and people shut up, but he won that Super Bowl with a hell of a surrounding cast around him. Why can't Ryan Tannehill get the same benefit? Eventually we are going to become a winning team again...It may even happen this year if we can put together a nice run. We've already proven we can play with the best teams in the league.
I lost hope with Fielder when I discovered he couldn't throw the out patterns well. I lost hope with Henne when he just wasn't progressing at all, and rarely took advantage of Marshall and was such a dink and dunker. I haven't lost hope with Tannehill. I was close against the Packers, and then in the 2nd half, he played better than I have ever seen Chad Henne play.
How many years did Davis play quarterback in college? Did he play another position in college? Just because they are similar ages doesn't make then similar at all.
its all about ryan playing faster physically, and slowing the game down mentally, few more games should be able to tell if he's gonna get there. how bizarre is it that we have a great fast deep threat in wallace and this dude has not literally got himself into a position where he can just throw the ball as far as he can..a pure deep throw, a pure release..its really strange. lazor needs to get that out of his system, golf analogy until you can swing hard and make pure contact doing so your to gonna find your swing.
A total indictment of the Ireland era there. He never could solve the QB or OLine equation. Oh but those of us calling for his ouster 3 years ago were bad fans......whatever.
Really now? He'll have to have consistent performance for a little more than a game and a half for me to be willing to accept crow on my plate
At the very least a performance like this should earn him some respite from the otherwise unrelenting "h8" being hurled around at him.
I've long supported him...he's my team's QB...pissin' in his cornflakes doesn't fit my persona... That said, for him to be truly considered THE answer...need a few more games like this consecutively...consistency... Took a few sacks he could've have maybe avoided with throwaways...but still very happy about his performance.
He's outplayed Brady and Cutler, two 100 million dollar QBs, played Rodgers to a draw and steamrolled Oakland's QB. He's had two bad quarters in the last 12, there are 20+ teams who'd take his performances and run with them yet some folks are ready to pull the plug. It's funny.
Tannehill raised the bar for himself today, but he has done it before only to have terrible outtings following a good game. He has another 10 games to go this season and needs to finish strong and play more consistently before the majority buys into him. No more games like the end of last season or against the Chiefs earlier this season.
thats ridiculous. of course he's going to have more chiefs games. every qb has days when the offense ****s the bed. i actually think it might be next week. jacksonville is number three in sacks going into this weekend. thats our offensive line's achilles heel...top ten pass rushes
Naaa...not against Jacksonville...not at all worried about that game (I'm not a coach, I don't have to make sure they don't let it be a trap game, but I'm sure it'll be covered). Gonna be another Miami road route (like the last 2).
The game on sky in the UK was colts v bengals. Dalton looked hopeless when in reality he's a pretty decent qb. There was nothing good about any part of his team today. It's a team sport and too much is lumped on the qb, wrongly in my opinion. Tannehill is still growing. I'm ok with the bad games and dough ball decisions if there is a general up arrow and I think that's what we have.
i was happy to see him use his entire skill set today...dont ever forget it..Lazor keep calling them.
Yeah, no sense in letting reality get in the way of a good flame. He's had three great games out of the last ten, and that's certainly not enough to place a crown on his head. Everyone likes what they see from Tannehill but nothing is proven about his longevity...yet.
that's the key. what we've been hoping to see all year. Lazor and Tannehill working together seamlessly. If they can keep this up, we're back in hunt for a wildcard. 3-3 is not the worst place to be. We do need someone else besides us to beat the friggin patriots though.
Nothing rediculous at all about expecting him to be more consistent going forward and playing better than he did either to finish last season or the start of this season.
Honestly, I'm not sure. I think it depends more on the Patriots than us, because Buffalo will flame out and the Jets aren't even in the conversation. If we keep playing football this way though, then there are not too many teams that will have us worried.
patriots are going to go through a part of their schedule soon where they will have at least two losses. we will have at least one
of course its ridiculous. you said no more games like kc. guaranteed he has another kc like gm. too many games to go. every qb in the league is going to have at least one kc type game before the season is over
Hats off to Tannehill. Last 6 quarters have been fantastic for him. Would love for it to continue. Hopefully this is just a sign of things to come.
