The poll options are somewhat slanted...I voted NO because I don't like where we are and that Packer loss still hurts, but that doesn't mean I think that Philbin should be canned at this point either...bottom line is this organization STILL does not have enough talent. All the coaching in the world can't fix that...we are still operating under the long arm of Ireland at this point...

Well, too many people are projecting their own meaning onto the question that it's a referendum on firing Philbin.

The question is not whether he should keep his job.

It's, like a presidential approval poll, do you approve of the job he is currently doing?

The keeping/canning question is related but different, imo. Many more factors to that one.

FTR I disagree re: talent. I believe we do have the talent.

IMO, this is the most talent Miami had on its team since Wanny wasted all that talent he had

Really couldn't say it any better than this. A completely wasted year because Stephen Ross wouldn't pull the trigger on a clean sweep, which was clearly needed.

Owners definitely affect the team. Often we forget whose door to lay the real blame at.

I fear that Philbin does not have it in his DNA to be aggressive when he needs to be. The calls and decisions he makes, such as calling the defensive time out, and the running play called when we were 3rd and 9 make little sense. It seems like he plays to try to not lose the game, rather than play to win, and has little faith in his players. Overthinks things, and is just too conservative. I personally, have seen enough. I hope and pray I will eat these words at the end of the season....

I really wanted to vote yes due to the strength of our roster and the way our team is playing, but there's just no way to do that with a 2-3 record and allowing the GB game to slip away. He is incompetent at best and it's time to part ways.

Can't answer that as phrased... it depends on whether you think a coach is the one who wins and loses the games, or whether you think the players do... or a combination of both.

Then it comes down to how much you approve of the job both are doing.

I think most are viewing this as a referendum for firing because they believe he's already doing the best job he possibly can.
Personally I'm convinced we've hitched our wagon to a highly dedicated, motivated but woefully under experienced coach.
Despite my current dissatisfaction, I don't yet believe he deserves the very publicized humiliation that would ensue, by firing him at this point in the season,
or that we would gain much, by promoting one of our coordinators to interim.

I never thought Philbin was a good hire in the first place. I felt he only got the job because he was the only candidate who was willing to work with Ireland.

I blame Ross far more for his inability to hire qualified personnel than I blame Philbin for the the state of this organization at this time. No one else was going to be dumb enough to hire Philbin for a head coaching job, except Ross.

The structure of the the front office, beginning with Ross, is the main problem with this organization. Until Ross sells the team to an owner who understands how to hire the right individuals to be the GM and head coach, the Dolphins will continue to be nothing but another mediocre franchise in the NFL.

Obviously Philbin is not qualified to be a NFL head coach, but does anyone really think Ross has the ability as an NFL owner to hire a highly capable head coaching candidate to replace Philbin? I certainly don't.

I dont think philbin is doing a good job but then again I don't think many coaches would win here when your qb is consistently at the bottom of the league in passer rating. You couple that with the turd nuggets that Ireland left gaping holes in our roster(ol last year, WR year before, LB) and you're not going to see a lot of wins.

Once again, that doesn't excuse philbin. He is part of the problem. But then again, he's just another face and name in a vicious cycle of the losing franchise that the Miami Dolphins have become.

Bill Belichick was 20-28 in his first three years as HC. Philbin needs to go 5-11 this year to match that record. Pete Carroll was 33-31 his first 4 years, finishing 5th, 1st, 4th and 5th in the AFC East.

Even the best coaches can struggle out of the gate.

Yep...it's a crap-shoot...just like the draft. Philbin, however, didn't have the experience coming into the job that you'd normally expect for your HC. Can he gain it here, who knows? I doubt it, but I'm certainly not an NFL HC expert. I just don't think he's shown well for himself thus far...he doesn't fill me with confidence, that's all I know.

I'm assuming BB's losing record was with the Browns, correct? Then he got fired, correct, in '95? Then didn't get another head coaching gig until '99/00 with the Pats?

I only saw one thing to complain about Philbin...but he made plenty other great calls that more than made up for it.

    Showed some sack finally.

Hes had the dolphins competetive every year. Thats more than the last 4-5 guys, plus better than alot of nfl coaches. Pretty decent so far stepping back for a minute.

really what it boils down to is that I want him to do well, so that we don't have to start over with a new regime. Unless things completely unravel, ill be rooting for Joe Philbin.

I'm definitely not back on the Philbin bandwagon, but he did call a much better game today and the offense looked crisp. Since the score was never in doubt, I say we postpone this conversation for 7 days and see what happens against Jax. I have a feeling that we're about to go on a 4 game win streak and this thread will fade with the wind.

Not really, its possible he was going to take a TO anyway to get the right play called. If that is the case, the challenge was just an extended TO.
