I have been thoroughly impressed with Jenkins this year and he has easily been the the best surprise this year! Even NFL.com is giving him some love in their honorable mention list. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...elson-deandre-levy-deserving-of-pro-bowl-nods
the guy is a difference maker no doubt. at florida he was always coming up with huge plays be it sacks, tackles, ints or even blocked punts.
I can recall some ppl not being in love with this pick, to me, his measurables were soo good I felt really good about that pick. Real question would be does his emergence mean a switch to more 3-4 looks makes more sense now.
I watched him mirror Wr's and Te's down sidelines, like step for step, then heard some Guru comments. Heh.
you were absolutely right about Jenkins, i remember you being high on the kid, I've said at least 10 times on the board that i underestimated him predraft.
He is well on his way .All he has to do is to keep his level of performance throughout the year and he will get it IMO. BTW I thought he was the best draft pick Ireland ever made and I said so at the time of his drafting so I am biased.
The craziest part of Jenkins' lights out play is that Wheeler had to be injured for him to get the chance and we had to lose Ellerbe for the year for him to keep starting.
Depending on FA this year and where we pick I'd like to look at linebackers in either the first or second round. If Jenkins can continue his play into the future and we can draft another stud LB suddenly our defense is elite IMO.
I agree that Jenkins has been by far the best pick of the 2013 draft for the Dolphins. Unfortunately it was this draft which was suppose to be the building block for the future and Jenkins is really the only player drafted in 2013 by Ireland who seems to be a player the Dolphins can build around. Jordan continues to be a huge question mark and both Davis and Taylor seem to be nothing better than bottom tier DB's at this time. Sims is probably the best draft pick behind Jenkins and he is nothing but a very average TE. Sturgis has shown that he is not an upgrade for Carpenter and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he isn't replaced by next season. In fact if he continues to miss kicks as he has done recently, he could be replaced during this season. Thomas seems to be nothing more than a backup type offensive lineman and considering where he was drafted, more was expected from him. Jones is no longer with the team and I doubt Gillislee will be a RB who is on the roster in the future. So while Ireland gets credit for selecting Jenkins. He also gets the blame for wasting what should have been a much more productive draft in 2013. Especially after trading up and getting the third overall selection in the draft.
http://www.maxpreps.com/news/M2in69n2O0SvC0U1Zq0U2g/dc--the-rapid-rise-of-jelani-jenkins.htm you should watch this kid at running back in high school..lol wow..a young 22 years old..this is gonna be fun..I don't think we need to go linebacker in the draft next year..with mccain and misi.
While I'll admit you are right and I should let it go. It still irks me a great deal that Ireland screwed up the 2013 draft so much. There was such high expectations going into that draft because of all the draft picks the organization had and now two years later, the only starters from that draft are Jenkins and a very average kicker in Sturgis. The best teams are built through the draft and we can only hope Hickey or whoever the GM is in the future ends up doing a far better job than our former GM did.
Hes near the top of the league in tackles, has 1 pass defense, 1 forced fumble and 1.5 sacks....What isnt good enough?
This is only his second year and he is only 22 years old. The game probably hasn't even "slowed down" for him yet. He covered his assignments down the field well last year, but this year he has been playing well downhill too. With his speed and being a former RB, I could see him taking some turnovers back for 6 in the future. If McCain can develop into something (he seriously looks like a monster out there on appearance alone), Misi stays healthy, and Jordan can somehow find himself and play more like he did in his rookie preseason....this D could be as menacing as can be. Reshad Jones looks like he is PEDs still out there, he is moving like a blur. With our CBs age, hopefully Taylor can develop. Should we go for another DB early next year?
He is tied for 25th in the league for tackles, so I am not sure about near the top. Further, he does not appear dominant when you watch film. He is good. His emergence has helped us win games, but we are talking about the pro bowl.
Yep...the pro-bowl...which always has the very top of each position in attendance, every time. It's damn near a popularity contest. Part of getting to the pro-bowl is other players' respect and exciting play. He's grading high through 6 games (overall 3rd 4-3 OLB on PFF), and his contributions to our team have been beyond expectations. He's had some flashy plays and he obviously has gained respect throughout a portion of the league, or he'd have never been brought up. So why not?
Right. Top 25 in NFL. What is the rank in afc. Which matters for pro bowl. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Game impacting plays, that is what the league is all about, this love of stats is best left to stat monkeys. 1 sack during the 4th qtr when the opponent is trying to rally to a game winning or tying score is worth 5 sacks in the first half.
It is far too soon to know whether or not those players can ever or will ever be decent solid starters. Some guys get it as a rookie, such as James. Some guys blossom in year 2 such as Vernon and Jenkins. Some guys take a little longer, such as Clay, who only exploded last year after getting the chance due to someone else's injury.
Normally I'd agree, but I'm just not seeing it. Coupled with the fact that we signed Finnegan in the offseason and haven't featured Davis/Taylor much except in certain nickel/dime packages. Taylor was hurt last year and fell behind and still looks to be trying to catch up. He also gets burned alot. Davis has flashed potential but still looks lost out there at times. Both look overmatched often. We might have to look at CB next year in the offseason.
Taylor is on the come. He has passed Davis on the depth chart. He has been thrown at 10 times this season and allowed 4 catches for 20 yards and no TDs. I'd guess the chances are at least 50/50 he becomes a starter next season.
Some Db's take a bit of time to develop, they come from college with raw tools then have to learn about leverage at an NFL level. They weren't facing Manning throwing back shoulder passes with pinpoint accuracy playing against N Dakota State
Granted it's fewer snaps but the toughest corners to complete a pass on this season, including the slot, are Thomas, Wilson and Taylor.
Jelani is 25th because he's had a bye. I believe the probowl is non-conferenced this year. I think the way to get there is big plays, and if he can maintain averaging an impact play (sack, int, ff) in half of our games (he has 3.5 in six games), he deserves it.
I think that nobody on the team will go to the pro bowl this season because they're gonna win the AFC. Maybe they won't, but I did just read your "identity" post and I must admit you got me psyched up.
Back to Jenkins... He is currently the best pass coverage 4-3 OLB. He is first in most coverage snaps per reception at 14.4. That basically entails the main thing you want your cover men to do, prevent receptions. He is 7th in cover snaps per target at 8.0, meaning he is thrown at once every 8 snaps. 201 snaps, targeted 25 times, allowed 14 catches for 139 yards, which is 0.69 yards per cover snap and that ranks as 4th fewest. He is 3rd in run stop pct at 14.6 He seldom rushes the passer, but when he does ranks 7th in pass rush productivity. 4 total pressures in 18 pass rush snaps.
I'm assuming you're getting these from PFF, if so, do they distinguish between a normal pass-rush and blitzing, or do they count those as one in the same? Just curious.
They don't distinguish between blitzing or edge-rushing, but they're divided into positions of roughly like players and their scores are normalized against them. Jenkins is in the 4-3 OLB category, so he's largely compared with blitzers. I believe the problem with comparisons come when you've got a guy who has a non-traditional role for a position- Von Miller is more of an edge rusher but graded with the 4-3 OLBs, is he benefiting or being penalized because he's being graded with guys more or less likely to produce stats relative to how often they pass rush?
It took him how long to get here? He's still got to prove he can do it for a full season. This is his first year out of Miami where he's keeping that QB rating against him low and not giving up a lot of TD's. (ie: last year he gave up nearly a 100QBR and 8 TD's).
