I prefer a coach like Phil Jackson (NBA, Lakers) than a coach who is going to micromanage during the game. Okay, the NBA is a different sport but Jackson would have a strange way with his players... he would wait to call timeouts... he'd try to let his players play themselves out of trouble, use their heads, learn what they have in practice and apply it in the game, rather than say "oh no, we've given up 4 baskets in a row, time to call a timeout so I can yell at my team." If you're team isn't playing well in the game, you've done a poor job of coaching them and getting them ready for it. But there isn't a set recipe for coaching. Some players respond differently to various styles as well. There's a balance you have to find as a coach. Which buttons to push and when to push them, so important.

I think Philbin stays if we win 10 games this year. I think there's a chance he also stays if we win 9 games. Whether we make the playoffs or not. You can't fire a coach that has improved, albeit incrementally, every year he's been here based on his win loss record.

Can't fire Philbin, that's crazy talk, he is untouchable.
Dude came in, didn't shy away like some other diva coaches who went to teams where they knew they had a QB or a team already built, he revamped the franchise, implemented a great system, a QB, set us straight for years to come in, we are competitive, we are winning by blowing out teams, we have a fun system and a fun young team, we are developing into a dominant team. And you want to fire him because what? He didn't call some time out, or he did? You want to make the playoffs when you are ready not when the team is ready?
You think Harbaugh can come in and do what Philbin has done, pull qa franchise out of the gutter by implementing everything? Hell no. We went through Shula's last year, Jimmy, Parcells, Saban and they could not do it, for 20 years.

This fire Philbin is crazy talk, you are out of your mind with fire Philbin and Phiblin is in the hot seat talk. You should all be kissing his feet. Dude is untouchable.

Good sign: in his first two years, Joe was 2-5 in November, and next week he has a chance to go 3-1 this season.

The best part, is that since you think its ridiculous, it actually legitimizes the claim.

It's playoffs or good bye IMO. He's done well the past 4 weeks, but that's not enough.

The ranking is based on an objective formula, it doesn't neccesarily mean he's a top 5 coach anymore than Foles would be considered a top 5 QB based on his stats. But, my eye test tells me Philbin is a very good coach, and the stats generated by my formula backs that up.

After last season the worst performing coaches:
    Jeff Fisher
    Mike Smith
    Mike Tomlin
    Jason Garrett
and Dennis Allen was the worst of them all.

Believe. Don't believe. I don't care. This info is for the people that already like Philbin, not pretending I'll be able to change anybodies mind.

Fin D - normally I respect your posts but I think you are getting a little irrational here... Saying Philbin is a better coordinator than Lazor because he won a superbowl is equivalent to saying Trent Dilfer is a better quarterback than Marino. I reread your post a few times (end of page 2) and couldn't find a different way to interpret.

Roy - agree with lucky, would like to see more details here...

I'm still on the fence on Philbin and while I am one of the haters of his defensive timeouts, i think the Philbin lovefest and hatefest is a bit crazy at this point.

Did anyone else cringe thinking Philbin was going to call timeout when the Bills had 4th down and 3 minutes to go?

Are you trolling? Philbin needs to get this team to the playoffs or he is in danger of losing his job. I really dislike how Philbin needed to be forced to fire Sherman, he should have done that right after the clock hit zero on the final game of the season last year. You can talk about loyalty, but I see a coach who was willing to sacrifice the good of the team for an old friend.

That said, I am warming to Philbin this year. Tanny is getting better before our eyes, the team (outside of the OL) is fairly solid, and we are still in the division and wildcard hunt in mid-November. I'd rather see how well this team can do with a second year in the new offense than start over YET AGAIN. That depends on Philbin getting to at least 9-7 though, and Harbaugh not being available and wanting to come here.

Not saying I'm sold but do teams lands good coordinators when the HC is terrible and on his last leg with a team? Good managers in every field are typically ones who put a great vision in place, communicate that vision consistently, hire great people, trust they will do a great job and let them do it. Don't have the insider knowledge to know if Philbin has/is able to do the first two and time will tell if his hires are great but I can say with decent certainty he trusts/let's his people do their jobs. When this management style works its a thing of beauty and preferable to micromanaging. Again the next few weeks will tell.

The important point is firing Philbin would significantly slow down the growth of this team. You do not impede an improving team. Our coordinators are performing too well to consider firing Philbin.

This is the reason I never believed Philbin's seat was particularly hot. I think all of the decision makers understand that a 1 year "playoffs or bust" ultimatum is dumb. Unless things go to hell in a handbasket Philbin has probably already done enough to secure his job for 2015.

You don't consider firing a coach because his coordinators are performing too well??? I never heard such a thing. Either he is a good HC or not, and the jury is still out on that. If people do not consider Joe's firing a possibility, they are not being realistic. No playoffs and an 8-8 record, he most likely will be fired.

What has he done to secure his job for next year? I am totally serious, we are 6-4 and playing better, so his job is safe for 2015 already? I really cant believe that could be true. And I know your rankings are objective but how in the world could Philbin even be considered top 15 let alone top 5? All the coaches on that list have won BIG and consistently except Philbin..Arians won with Indy last year and is winning big in Arizona this year. I am just not seeing it.

We'll have to wait and see how this season plays out to judge Philbin. There's times when he looks like he's not HC material. But we've undoubtedly made progress on both sides of the ball this year, so you have to credit Philbin along with the staff and Hickey for that. I'm intrigued to see what we can do if we swap out a couple of players this year for upgrades next year (another RB, a #2 TE, big physical WR, depth at CB). Maybe one more season with this staff and Hickey and see where we go?

I understand you want him fired if he doesn't make the playoffs I just don't believe his seat was as hot as most fans would have hoped. I think Philbin, Lazor, Hickey and Tannehill are all on a 2 year audition and they would have had to have screwed up royally to have that cut short. This is not about what I think should happen, this is what I think will happen. I don't debate predictions, but if you want to put cash on it I'll bet as much as you want.

Me keeping Philbin has nothing to do with the playoffs. If we win 9 or 10 and miss the playoffs, I would lean to take him back. Lets see how we finish before we say Philbin can not be fired or is a very good HC. I want Joe to succeed...I want him back if the results show it.... not after 10 games. If we win 8 or 9 limping at the finish line, I would get rid of him. And thats what I think should happen and will happen.

Roy, I am a lifetime Dolfan since 66 and I don't think any of us HOPES Philbin is fired. We all for the most part hope we keep improving like the players and coaches have been and play playoff football. I am sick and tired of constant rebuilding for one! I feel that we have a solid staff whom is continually improving and I for sure want to ride this one out. Let Hickey have an even better draft and Coaches same.

Some most certainly do. I see plenty of people saying what we're doing this season is in spite of Philbin and he is the only thing holding us back from being a SB contender right now.

Well I agree with you, he has had a few slip ups this year in my eyes but I have also watched him continue to grow and get better. The players seem to really respect him and play hard for him and he has this year hired some tremendous coaches to complete our staff. The linebacker coach has also been a huge hire besides Benton and Lazor. I also Think it is great that Dan has taken an interest in Tanny and has been working with him and I think that has also helped with Tanny's growth. Shula also thinks alot of Philbin's abilities which also help me and I believe that we have something special cooking here in Miami again.....FINALLY

There's an interesting nugget from today.

Has a coach with a better record ever been fired and replaced by a coach of a team with a worse record?
