We are currently: #2 Total Defense #2 Pass Defense #8 Rush Defense. We trail the Lions in Total defense by an average of 19 yards a game and we trail the Chiefs in Pass Defense by an average of 3 yards per game. After this week plays out, we are bound to lead the league.
If we are 19 yards per game behind they would have to give up their season average in yards + 19 yards x 10 games == 190 yards in order for us to tie.So for instance if they give up 200 YPG, they would need to give up 390 yards tomorrow. Correct me if wrong.
This is how my mind works. We have given up an average of 302.5 yards a game after 10 games so thats 3025 total yards. The lions have given up an average of 283.4 times 9 games puts them at 2550.6 so they have to end up with more than 3025, so that means they have to give up 475.4 yards this week. Now that I think about it, I don't like those odds. But I am not sure I am going about this the right way. It makes sense to me though. So somebody correct me if I am wrong.
I think we are on to something or at least very close. I figure they need to give up 475.4 yards, If I subtract 190 yards you are talking about that would put their average at 275.4 but I know their actual average is 283.4 If we go with their actual average and add 190 yards, they need to give up 473.4 yards against the Cardinals. So I am not sure if its 473.4 or 475.4, so lets just hope they give up 476 yards. lol
I don't care that much about yards allowed. Points matter more, especially for a bend-but-don't-break defense like ours. The Fins are currently 3rd behind Detroit and KC in points allowed, just a bit over 2 per game more than Detroit.
The difference is that they probably allow 19.something and the .something adds up to a few extra yards over the season. I think.
It's probably more likely that we get #1 in passing Defense this week. I think there is a good chance we move up from #8 Rush Defense as well, of course it all depends on what happens this week. And Finneas, I hear ya, but I want both. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but we are very close to being #1 in just about everything on Defense. I'm loving it! And it is why I don't fear the Broncos and Pats. Although the Broncos have a top 5 Defense and Offense. So maybe I lied, I'm a little concerned about Denver but I am definitely not concerned about New England.
Pretty impressive regardless, but yeah I'm more concerned/impressed w/ points per series or just points per game.
Maybe you are right about the ranking, but it doesn't erase failures in the GB and Lions game to me...they didn't get the job done in those two games...
Regardless of where Miami ranks, the defense is very, very good. Aside from one dud game (Kansas City) and an oddball game where they couldn't get off the field for nearly a half (Jacksonville) they've been very consistent. Of course, Peyton Manning looms. We'll see how good this D really is next week. IMO, Miami really needs to make good use of Dion Jordan against Julius Thomas this week and be able to pressure using only 4 or 5 guys. I really like Cameron Wake vs. Chris Clark. OV has a tough draw against Ryan Clady who is pretty good and pretty underrated. Denver's interior OL, while unheralded, are all pretty big guys so hopefully Starks, Odrick, Mitchell, and Shelby get good interior push. I like Brent Grimes and Finnegan on Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders respectively. I do NOT like Jimmy Wilson vs. Wes Welker in the slot; that's a complete mismatch in favor of Denver, and the propensity for Kevin Coyle to show those double-A gap pressures makes it tougher to get LBs, predominantly Jenkins and Misi who are in nickel, to assist with coverage. I think this needs to be one of those games, like Cincinnati last year, where Coyle is VERY creative with combo coverages and the looks that he presents in sub-packages.
I said this in another thread but I think it is worth repeating here. Our defense has benefited from consistency with our style of defense and our DC, could you imagine what would happen if our current offense could have consistency with the same offense and same OC? Not to change the subject but this is my biggest objection to the crazy people that think we need a new head coach, I don't want to see this team go through anymore drastic changes.
With The sunday games in the bag not much has changed. We are the same rank but we are closer to the Lions on total defense and a little further from the Chiefs in pass defense. The Lions were an average of 19.1 yards ahead of us now they are roughly an average of 12 yards ahead of us on total defense. The Chiefs were an average of 3 yards per game ahead of us in pass defense, now they are an average of 7 yards ahead of us. We are still: #2 Total Defense #2 Pass Defense #8 Rush Defense
Actually we are tied for 1st We are alone in 1st place in yards per play in "last 3" which I assume to mean the last 3 games we've played.
We are also 1st place in opponent 1st downs per game and opponent 1st downs per play. I wish we were 1st in opponent 3rd down conversions per game (we are 20th) but we are 13th in opponent 3rd down conversion percentage.
One defensive stat they say has a key correlation in W-L pct is passing yards per attempt. The lower the better of course.
This means we have to be better at time of possession on offense. I'm not sure where we rank there but I would imagine if we held on to the ball longer and put that together with being the #1 defensive team in yards per play, that would equal total dominance.
We are #2 at opponent passing yards per play http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-yards-per-pass-attempt it is worded this way: NFL Team Opponent Yards per Pass Attempt We allow 5.7 yards per pass attempt. Denver is 1st with 5.6 Very impressive, but I don't like the "per pass attempt" as I think this would figure in incomplete passes for 0 yards because that is not always related to how good a defense is, could just be a horrible throw on a wide open WR. I wish it was "per pass completion". Ok, I just looked up NFL team opponent yards per completion. We are in 3rd place Denver 9.2 Detroit 9.5 Miami 9.6 Buffalo 9.6 We are 3rd in scoring defense for the season with our opponents scoring 18 ppg, but we are #1 in our last 3 games with our opponents scoring 9.7 ppg. I'm going to put all this info in the OP soon, I don't feel like doing it right now. I'm glad I found this website.
I don't think people realize just how freaking good we are at defense, I hope we do our best to keep this defense together as long as possible, while improving our offense. We could be set for years! I dread the salary cap and player contracts messing this up. One thing is for sure, we need to keep Coyle forever! If he ever gets offered a HC position somewhere else I hope we aren't stupid enough to let him go, at that point I would hope we are smart enough to make him our HC.
PLUS, we'd play the Bengals in the first round, who we are better than. And then would play the Patriots, and we are the only team that can seem to beat them with any regularity. Soooooooooo, that's fun. It is true, if we get into the playoffs, we can beat anyone and anything could happen.
