No, and no one is saying we should.

However, the game is always changing..players including qbs need to be in top condition..top condition doesn't mean bulky upper body muscles..

Yeah it doesn't appear he's going to put that criticism to rest this year so the scouts will just have to take it for what it is and decide if it's significant or not.

Overall had a good game though. He's had a nice string after what I felt were some pretty substandard outings earlier against the likes of UCLA and obviously Arizona.

Daniel Jeremiah brought up the issue with him though. We don't know what he can do from inside the pocket, whether he can be dangerous that way. We'll not know until he's a pro, I suppose.

Surprised you like Mariotta DJ for the simple fact he looks like a high schooler build wise.

There can be a million little rumors and innuendos based on a few seconds of a captured exchange here, or some friend of a friend of the program saying that this happened...but in the end as long as Jameis Winston continues to successfully talk the talk AND walk the walk, none of that stuff amounts to anything.

The guy has shown the ability to be contrite about his mistakes (has apologized to his teammates several times), he's shown the ability to be self-critical when he's not playing well, he's got a great relationship with his coaches, his teammates love him, constantly cite their interactions with him as having really affected their mentality during games, and they call him an "amazing" leader.

When these things are happening, all that other noise looks like useless distraction.

    Hey DJ...you'll like this.

So we know that Rakeem Cato broke Russell Wilson's record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass when he tossed his 39th against Florida International. But do you know who might have taken the record away from Russell Wilson if Cato had not done it?

    Marcus Mariota.

He just tossed a passing touchdown in his 36th consecutive game. Oregon plays two more games in the regular season, and then they will likely play in the College Playoffs. The first round of the playoffs would be Mariota's potential 39th game which would have been the game to break Wilson's record.

As it stands though, even if Mariota gets to the championship game and throws a touchdown in his 40th consecutive game...he won't break Cato's record as Rakeem just pushed it to 41 consecutive games this weekend. He still has three more regular season games, a conference championship game, and then a bowl game. So he could push the record to 46 consecutive games.

I personally believe if he gets to 46 consecutive games the record will never be broken. I hate to say never. But I really think it's true.

He was a 150 pounder as a true freshman.

And the last time he failed to throw a TD pass was a game he didn't start. He was benched for three games as a true freshman because he was too intense, too angry. They brought him in for spot duty in those three games and I think he threw three or four pass attempts in each one. Still managed to hit a TD pass in two of those games.

It's sad because I'm still sensing that he's getting no respect from traditionalists in the scouting community because of how much he breaks the mold.

He speaks like a guy from Liberty City. Sure you get him talking about routes and stuff and suddenly you start speaking the same language. But he's not affluent. He's also 6'0" to 6'1" and maybe 190 lbs. He looks skinny. He's black as midnight. He's fiery on the sidelines, fiery on the field. He holds and throws the football loose, like a gunslinger. He plays in one of these newfangled offenses that are still only slowly creeping into the NFL (note: his offense isn't much different from Miami's).

Hell people that don't know him at all probably think it's a matter of time before he gets into trouble with drugs or the law in some way. They don't realize how antithetical that would be to who he is, but they'll see the way he looks, the way he talks, the place he's from, and they'll assume.

Regarding the frame and musculature I've been anxious to get your input actually. I brought something up in the post below...

    http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?83531-QB-Rakeem-Cato&p=2450927&viewfull=1#post2450927

Specifically I want to know if you notice any differences between last year and this year. I could swear there's a big difference, particularly around his butt and thighs (insert joke here).

One thing that strikes me is this new NCAA rule that allows teams free rein to feed their players now gives strength and conditioning coaches all kinds of ability to affect their players' diets to where they can put on more weight and muscle.

That rule change only took effect this year and unlike many of the bigger programs which had been breaking the rules all along, I think Marshall only started helping these kids with their diet once the rules changed. Now they're drinking team-provided Muscle Milk and all that kind of stuff. Remember that a ton of these kids are poor as sh-t. I doubt they can buy this stuff on their own.

Here's a good article explaining the situation with the rule change that happened this April in the NCAA about feeding athletes.

    http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2014/07/21/0721-osu-nutrition.html

I would think it would really interest you, DJ. The restrictions were extremely heavy before.

Teams like Ohio State already had employed dieticians specifically for the football team. And even though Ohio State's dietician laments how little she was able to do for the players, I'm positive there was a lot going on that was kind of under the table. I've heard all kinds of stories of teams hiring chefs to cook meals for their players. It may not have happened at the facilities under the direct supervision of the dietician, but I think it was happening nonetheless.

But smaller programs like Marshall? They weren't doing that stuff. I'd be shocked if Marshall had a dietician on staff prior to the rule change (or even after it, to be honest). And they certainly weren't hiring chefs to keep their players fed and their diets under control.

Now they are basically free of restrictions and I think that means they can control these players' diets to a very LARGE degree. This should result in a pretty big change to the college landscape, I would think.

Well Tampa Bay....if Winston declares be smart please and draft him and leave Marriota to the Jets.m.Winston by far the better QB....or trade the pick to us :) even better then we can draft Winston to compete with Tanny and be Tanny's back up the first year anyways..but no chance of that so I am hoping for Gordon and Cato and a really good big WR.

on the season the kid has 41 total tds...2 ints.....41/2/lol.{he does have some fumlbe turnovers, but I don't see them listed}....these are not some small college stats...this is big time college football, and no chip kelly.

almost at 70%..over a 6 yard average on the run..almost 12 yards per attempt.

and you want him in our division...yeah...no..

heres the thing, first of all he's the most gifted overall dual threat prospect I've ever scouted, I have no qualms with him being put into a system that exploits that skill set and matches those two things, system/elite system skillset, together and whoop the pocket qbs asses.

I am sorry you feel that way...there is no way Marriota can hang with Winston....First of all...he plays in the Pac 12....give me a break...he also fumbles quite frequently...Jameis.had to break in all new WR except for Green and they are still missing some of the timing routes causing int. Yes if we have to face one of them twice a year I would much rather it be Mariota..and for all the people spewing junk about Jameis....he was Studying how to play QB in the NFL in 7th grade !!! He is extremely football smart and I guess I will have to state again.....taking advanced placement courses in high school he carried a 4.0 GPA so it does get old hearing people talk about him being unintelligent. ...Does he have growing up to do? Of course he does..he needs to really work on his common sense. I say all of this believing since they did not prosecute that whatever happened was consensual however, if proved otherwise then I change my stance on his character and would not want him. If we somehow lucked out and had first choice of a QB it would be Jameis Winston....He just toys with college defenses now. I am sorry that you do not agree...but then again you do not have too. I trust my eyes and knowledge of college QB's as well as anyone's..it all comes down to preference, but I will tell you a little secret, Jameis can scramble as well as most but when you have his football IQ, and his pocket awareness , and arm....he does not need to scramble or run a read option..he does what QB's are supposed to do.....Throw the Ball ! ! ! !

You obviously have lost the spirit if this thread.

You will not find anywhere me telling you about the weaknesses of winstins game in the field so stop trying so hard to stir up that argument..

I'll refresh you on the debates spirit and where it all came from..

Some folks said that if mariota came out last year they didn't think he was first round worthy..I vehemently disagreed and said I believed he would of been the first pick in the draft over clowney..

so I statred a thread early in the season saying I would take mariota over Winston and that folks better start to do some re-evaluations on the prospect..

I think he has debunked any of the nonsense that he wasn't a legit blue chip qb prospect..

Now if you wanna say that you or anyone else wouldn't give up their first round pick if you needed a qb, then so be it, that's your opinion, I just take it to the level that I would take Marcus over Winston..

So what is it your trying to say about mariota..?

I'm trying to figure out what you mean when you say that your sorry for me feeling that way??...lol

So what...He has beat 28Teams in a row including ACC, SEC, BIG 12....ETC... He is 28-0 and today was his worst game ever and with 4 int.'s he still finds a way to bring his team back for the win. In 21 FINS games with QB with 4 picks...he is the first one to get the win! I think this year he had played really well considering he lost most of his WR's and most of all his OC James Coley went to UM.

How many offensive players will get drafted to the pros from flu relative to Oregins offense.

Did you know that oregons oline has been in shambles this year..

Just because you love Winston doesn't mean you have to sh## on mariota, you will look silly in a few years.

What are you talking about DJ? Don't take things personal...I am not trying to stir up anything....this is a Mariota - Winston thread right? OK then...I am just stating why I like Winston better...
Others in this thread have tried to trash him and I am just defending my stance on why I like him in this comparison thread. I am not trying to offend you or anyone else...sorry if that is the way it was taken...not my intent at all.

Ok It just sounds like your in an argument with someone who is calling him a bust..I've also stated that his personality and leadership skills do have merit in a college locker room, and that there is something there that I have to acknowledge..

I don't like the guy, has nothing to do with his game, and if I got a choice, I'll take mariota.

    12 ints in three years..

You don't think that is significant?

Have you seen this kid break the pocket? He can make the spectacular play, he can house it on the read option, he has perfect mechanics..prototype size..blazing speed..all he needs is an intelligent enough coach to utilize every inch of his talent.

The throw that will end this debate..12 min mark to go in the 2nd..it will be engrained in your minds for the next 6 months.

Holds the safety with his eyes, then fires a deep slant 35 yards on a line for 6... In perfect stride...

Dude is putting on a qb clinic, touch, athleticism, arm strength accuracy...

Like I've been saying for 2 years, best dual threat ever..
