No, this isn't a fantasy novel. It's an article from FanSided. Taking a look at 2015 HC sleepers FanSided listed Kevin Coyle as one of three options and had this to say: "Ryan Tannehill is not the reason the Miami Dolphins are in the playoff discussion. If they didn’t have a top 10 defense this team wouldn’t even be over .500. That is a massive tip of the cap to Kevin Coyle who has built the unit into one of the best in pro football since taking over in 2012. He has been in the league for 13 years and been in the sport since 1978. The time may be at hand for the guy to get a serious look at running his own team." The other two options were Tom Clements (Packers OC) and Rex Ryan. So how about it - Let Coyle head out to be a HC elsewhere and then we could switch Philbin for Ryan?
Coyle's fingerprint is certainly all over the secondary, as it should be. I don't know about Rex. I mean, from all accounts, he is a helluva DC. Did he pour everything into that organization, and does he maybe just NEED a break from coaching? I do not like the prospect of bringing in a coach from a division rival, but.....
I'd call Coyle good, but certainly far from great and nothing that makes me want him as a HC. Really seemed that on MNF, he was overcompensating for having a backup at CB when he should have been stacking the box. Not HC material IMO.
No thank you. When Philbin is finally canned, I want a guy who's been a winner at the NFL level as HC before, but who isn't a total jerk like Rex or Jim harbaugh.
I can't understand the fascination with Rex as a HC. Yes, he had some success in the playoffs his first two years but given what that team has achieved since, I can't help but wonder if that success was not because of Rex but in spite of him. Listen to his recent interviews, he seriously has no clue why they are so bad this year and is unwilling to accept any blame for anything.
This talk will die out if Coyle's unit continues to look more like a liability than a top ten unit, as it has in the past 2 games. Rex Ryan as a defensive coordinator of this team would be a great thing in my humble opinion.
It would be interesting to see what Rex Ryan could do with a roster that had some real talent. He can build a legit defense if a GM gives him a secondary. I do think he was set up to be fired in New York. I think he'll get another chance, it will be fun to see if he can do it on a team that has talent, this Jest team is the worst team talent wise in the NFL IMO, even worse than the Raiders. Coyle....meh...not a serious candidate for a HC job to me.
that would only work if his personality was compatible with whoever the HC was. No way do I see him meshing with Philbin. not saying that Ryan wouldn't be an upgrade over Coyle, but it would have to be with a strong HC who knows how to handle Rex and his circus.
I am not sure Philbin would want an assistant coach who grabs all the headlines with his one liners .Philbin doesnt appear to have the character to be able to handle him.
I've read a couple time where the defensive players were way not happy with Coyle, as in he is holding the back.
Possibly I'd love Rex Ryan as DC but part of me fears the media reports "Dolphin players trust Ryan more than Philbin" true or untrue those reports will surface and we will have problems.
That is such a laughable article. Top 10 defense? Maybe statistically, but again, this is where statistics fail us. An elite defense does NOT fold down the stretch, losing multiple games in the fourth quarter in embarrassing ways. Elite defenses are the defense that can be depended on to close out games in the fourth when they are handed a lead. This defense is fraudulent, and way overrated. If our defense played the way that pundits say we're rated, the Dolphins would be 10-2 right now.
I don't think Kevin Coyle will get a lot of serious job offers, but I think it's important to note how much there's a lack of transparency when it comes to this kind of situation. There's an old boy's club will coaches who have worked together will say nothing but nice things about each other barring some sort of blow-up. You've also got an opacity where you've got non-football people whom are often in positions to make these decisions, and a situation where those people can be dazzled by the interview process. It's very easy for situations to occur where a guy gets interviews because his unit performed well without always clear evidence it's all his responsibility. Hence, Joe Philbin being hired.
Rex Ryan as our DC would make me smile because you would have Jordan, Wake and Vernon all playing outside LB, Misi and Jenkins can both play the middle. Starks, Mitchell, and Odrick as the Dline, we'd have to beef up the NT spot but that's a sweet rotation with Shelby as well. God I'd love all of this. I would be the most talent he's had on D in years to work with and the first time he had a real pass rusher since Baltimore.
Rex Ryan is a hell of a coach. See 2013 and his 8-8 finish. Or most his other years in NY. He's gotten the best out of some mediocre teams. His biggest problem right now is personnel. the NYJ are really a talentless bunch. Outside of Belichick, there's not a coach in the NFL who could do better than 2-10 with that team. I would love Rex in Miami. I wouldn't advocate firing Coyle though. He's done a very good job here. Especially w/o a lot of LB talent and DB depth issues.
Anyone who is willing to bring Rex in is nuts. It's not a question of if he is a good coach, it's the fact of the drama and style he will bring. Having watched his dad in Philadelphia and now Rex in NY, there is no doubt that apple never left the tree. Neither cared / cares about offense, and if they had their way would have football without it. Buddy would lay the blame for losses at the feet of the OC and offense, Rex simply has no understanding or want of understanding of the need for offense. Look at what is goingon in NO and you see more of the Buddy bloodline bleeding over. I would give my left nut for the Phins to have played the 85Bears in the SB and shred his vaunted D a 2nd time.
I don't remember Rex Ryan really grabbing any headlines in Baltimore when he was there, save for calling the TO during their game against the Patriots on that 4th & 1 where they stopped Brady's sneak and won the game, preventing the Pats from going undefeated in the regular season. I think he'd play good soldier as I think he wants to get back to being a head coach. If he gets Miami's defense over the top (i.e. top 5) for a year or two, he'll get an offer and I think you can keep him "muzzled", for lack of a better term, for that period of time.
