There is something called progressions. If RT reads his first progression and the guy is open you throw it to that first progression without even looking at your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th progressions. Do you want him to look at all of his progressions every play to make sure he is not missing a wide open WR? That leads to sacks, there is not enough time in each play for that. RT did his job.

not to mention he didn't really have time to get past the first or second progression tonight, he was under the gun play after play.

I don't feel particularly confident after this win. I actually felt more confident after the GB loss. But I've always focused more on how the team plays than just the Won/Loss record. I think that speaks to what you can reasonably expect going forward far more than whether you won or lost one game. After the GB game I felt we were playing as well as any team in the league. After this game I'm more worried that our run D deficiency has become a trend. I'll give the Jets credit b/c they ran a ton of miss direction and a huge variety of run plays, but much of that was poor tackling and just not getting off blocks by Miami. I would have liked to see RT take over the game with his feet a bit (both scrambling to buy time and running a bit better). There were positives too. I like that the team gutted out a win in a close game, which we hadn't done this year. I like that RT made that clutch 3rd down pass on the final drive. RT has proven on multiple occasions that he can bounce back. And I like how Sims is developing into a solid #2 TE. I'd give the close win a bit of a pass b/c division wins are always tough, but that run D was really concerning.

Madden football has warped people's minds in regards to actual football. People believe that QB's should throw laser beam precision passes all over the field. They believe that the QB should be able to see every receiver almost instantaneously like in Madden. It just doesn't work that way.

Interesting the posters here saying that if the jets could have thrown the ball they would have blown us out. If they threw, they wouldn't have rushed for 230+ yards. There would have been more opportunity for INT's because Geno sucks. The pass rush would have had something to rush against. Our offense would have had more time on the field. If the Jets had thrown, the game would have been completely different. Just by logic, all things could not have been equal.

The Jets used 7 different rushers, and ran just about every type of running play there is. There was no way to game plan against that onslaught. Similar to when we broke out the Wildcat on NE, they had no clue. The defense came out after half and made the necessary adjustments to shut them down. They gave the offense time on the field, and the offense made it count.

Ugly win is still a win. Divisional win is good regardless. AFC win is good regardless. Road win is good regardless. Close win is good regardless. We lost this game last year. Don't forget that. Needed a win against a terrible jets squad and we choked. They pulled it out this year and with 3 of 4 at home we have about the best road to the playoffs as we could hope for.

Actually we won this game last year.. we lost the game at home, the last one of the season, just like this year... that game is yet to come.

I totally agree and I know what you mean. The defense in the past 2 weeks is concerning but we played one of the best offenses in Denver and a team that hates us more than any other team in New York. Our injuries are being over looked in my opinion. We just had a guy start that was on the team for 4 days. Our O-line is standing on its last leg, we need a handful of guys to get healthy quickly. Now it is back to normal football with the advantage on our side with 3 of the next 4 games at our house. These next 2 weeks are huge! I know it is unlikely that the Chargers beat the Pats, but the Chargers aren't pushovers for sure and that game is in San Diego. They've won 8 games for a reason and besides us, they have the best chance to beat the Pats. It's very possible that in 2 weeks we could be division leaders. I'm looking forward to 9-5 and first place in our division but we have to be 8-5 first and despite the way we've played on defense the past 2 weeks, I believe the defense will come back to form this next week.

Jon Gruden actually explained that during the game. It's not like Tannehill can see every open guy all at once, and then choose which of the open receivers is most likely to score. Progressions are just that.. Who is the first read? Is he open?

Not only win but "win with style". LOL. Earlier in the season the Pats,at home, needed a blocked field goal to beat these Jets. They also needed a red zone Int to beat the Raiders. Anybody thinking about that now??? Of course not, know why? A WIN is a WIN.

Also, we lost with style to the Packers,Lions,Broncos...is that better then winning ugly and grinding it out??? Didnt think so.

I disagree with a lot of negativity here. This was a trap avoided, and this is a crazy *** league. If they passed we would have lost? Why would they pass when rushing for 200 yards in a half?? There were no yards left on the field by the Jets. They gashed us but we endured.

I will say, our injuries could come back to haunt us, if our current line and secondary can't stay healthy. We need Clay and Finnegan big time too. We need Miller close to 100% otherwise, we will have issues winning.

I just watched Skip Bayless rag on RT17. Clearly, he is harping on his old draft forecast, and still rooting for him to not pan out. But he is talking about RT not playing well, not being the answer going forward. This guy knows nothing about football. RT single handedly saved Philbins job last night. He has put the team on his shoulders. Put our acclaimed defense in positions to win close games. And seriously, what are there, 9 or 10 good Qbs in this league? Who the hell else is there? What a joke.

Exactly, I heard that too. Tannehill went with his first option and the receiver was open. Clueless to fault Tanny there.

The offense scored exactly 1 TD. How can you talk about how great Tannehill played? The TD that the offense scored was like a 30 yard drive because the defense gave them the ball there. The final drive was like a 30 drive too.

He completed over 70% of passes and moved the ball enough for us to put points up and win, on a week we didn't show up, especially defensively, while losing two more key Offensive starters. RT has done a lot of scoring this season. First QB since Marino with back to back 20+ TD seasons. We played poorly, so yes, the stat line was bad. That happens to every team. Literally every team. No one game defines us, certainly not last nights ugly win. And if there is an elephant in the room to be addressed, it is Coyle and the run D.

He threw mostly 5 yard pass plays he better complete 70% of those. The defense got gashed, but in the second half they shut the Jets down, that was key to this game. Not sure why it took Coyle 3 quarters to figure out what he needed to do

That's absurd... Go back and look at the stats.. Most of his passes were mid range..

67 yards rushing in a half isn't that bad either. We need to fix the run fast, because the Ravens are a multi dimensional offense. Finnegan needs to suit up Sunday.

It's funny, when Tannehill played like crap in the first half of the Green Bay game, but played the entire second half like a HoFer, the narrative from the anti-Tannehill crowd was that if Tannehill had played better, we would have won. I get the feeling, in this game, had we lost, the narrative would have been that Tannehill cost us the game, again letting the defense off the hook. The defense played like crap.

going to re-post what I wrote up last night in the Club...

hah.. well... we can't afford to play like that against a playoff quality opponent (like the two we'll have these next two weeks).

Good news is we won a game that was close at the end in the fourth quarter. A good come from behind win in enemy territory against a team that really gets up for us. I'm going to be glad when Rex is finally fired because that team doesn't lay down when they have a chance to ruin our game day... hopefully he's gone by week 17 or that will be another dog fight of a game, whether we're in playoff contention or not.

Tannehill made some huge plays down the stretch... huge passes to Sims to get into field goal range... sure would have liked a TD at the end, but we just needed three there... again, against a better opponent, TD would be more suitable. Sims had a massive game in the receiving and blocking department.

Hope Wake is okay next week...

    That was a penalty...

oh and that was a fumble too...

Lamar Miller has hands of stone...

For the first half, our defense was stoned...

2nd half, they woke up... and so did Coyle as he stacked the box to our favor.

It seemed to me like Rex and Marty were forced to start Geno and basically said, **** it, you can force him on us, but you can't force us to have him throw the ball.

A little bit of love for Lazor in the 2nd half and staying with the run. That's how we got our lone touchdown... should have been how we got our 2nd touchdown at the end too...

ALthough I like how we have a **** ton of confidence in Tannehill to throw it there...

Not sure which kick was bigger tonight from Sturgis.. the gw FG... or the KO after the GW FG into the endzone... both were massive...

Jelani Jenkins is a stud at times... and then at other times he struggles vs the run and getting off blocks... hope he isn't wearing down...

    Hope Mitchell/Starks/Odrick aren't either...

Switching that DL front to get all three was big in the second half...

Thank God Reshad Jones has good hands...playmaking safety... our best safety in a long time....

Guess we figured out how to use Dion Jordan (blocking kicks)

Jets were getting great yardage on those reverses in the first half.. but you saw Olivier Vernon make a great adjustment in the 2nd half and play his side of the field on that short what 1 yard gain in the 3rd qtr... that was the end of the reverses...

Does RJ Stanford get a plus rating from PFF for tonight's Geno Smith performance??

Our linebackers are great when they attack the line of scrimmage... but if they have to sit and wait to react, they get washed up by the o line and can't get off blocks...

The Ravens are going to run it down our throats next week...

So much for connecting deep today... that won't help us against the Ravens... and getting them to back off...

I'm fired up... but we have to play better next week or we won't win. Flacco is 10 times a better qb than Geno Smith... he's struggled at times this season, but seemingly plays well vs us every time we play them. Going to be an interesting special teams match up too. Ravens are one of the best in the NFL when it comes to the 3rd part of the game.

I agree with Dez, winning is irrelevant. Play with style, make it fun to watch. Nobody really keeps count on wins and losses. I would love if we lost every game...just as long as it was fun to watch. Same with people posting. Do not post info, just post fun and STYLE. much more entertaining. You go Dez, keep preaching the gospel.

Great post, thanks for giving us a taste of club. I noticed the same thing about Olivier Vernon, it's like he flipped a switch and said these reverses aren't happening anymore. It was great to see him contain the edge like that and I thought to myself, is this something Vernon did by himself or did Coyle play a role in that? I wish I knew the answers to questions like that, either way, it was great to see it happening.

Dez, I think it's more important that we win the games we should rather that whether any win is with style... This is one we should have won. What I still dislike about Philbin and his staff is that they simply don't seem to get this team up for games that they should be up for... We have good things going for us...this team should be frothing at the mouth, and they come out cold and lethargic...that's sad...but that's Philbin's style, that 'quiet confidence' type and IMHO just doesn't work in today's NFL...

They did come out flat yesterday. I'll blame it on the holidays.
Philbin is great, and these coaches can do the job and they do, but they just insist on certain alignment as if they simply want to practice it in gametime for tape evaluations.

Philbin mentioned today in the presser, they want to play balanced football and the excess of passing is not what he wants to do. Yet we start the game with 19 passes and 3 runs in the first half. We have RBs who can get you 5 a pop and the line to block. We just don't do it. I suspect they are bent on developing Tannehill. It also could be that they have runs for certain defensive alignments and down and distance situations and they only run it when those are presented. Whatever it is, it is not working. But the run and balanced offense are working.

So back to the "flat" topic. The Oline comes out on the field to start the game, and Lazor has them reeling backwards for the full half, out of the tunnel, RT feels the pressure, some throws are off, and we keep getting 3 and outs. (To make matters worse, we have issues on the Oline, inconsistent receivers and a developing QB.) As the game goes on, they get into the groove, we mix in some runs, and it gets better. And that has been the theme.

As far as the D goes, the scheme has been puzzling the last two games, but last night Coyle held them to 13. That's good. The bad part is, although the D held them to low scoring, the field position was not favorable to us because of the bad D, and that is not good. It's not enough that we held them to low points. The D has other responsibility throughout the game as well.

So, to cap it, the playcalling has not been favorable from both coordinators that would allow us to excel. I don't think players are playing flat in general.
