I would like it to be top 10, but once again we are talking about the difference between 3 or 4 passes of being top 10, assuming that all the top 10 deep passing QB's are in the 40 percent range this year. Also, I realize that the deep pass is a small part of the game.

I don't want to be top 10. I want top 3. I want an ELITE QB after all these years. We deserve it...

It must be frustrating for you to be a fan of a team with your standards. All of us would like to be the best in every category, but if those are your standards you must be a very frustrated person. Can you appreciate progress on Tannehill's way to being top 3? Or did you expect him to be perfect from the moment we drafted him and/or will you only be happy if and/or when he is ever a top 3 QB? At some point you've got to lower your standards and appreciate progress. Are you this way with women? Still waiting on a super model? lol.

I am frustrated and I do want the best. And I am very pleased with Tannehill's progression after being thrown into the fire right off the bat being so green. And my girlfriend is Gorgeous. Haven't you heard? Lmao

The deep ball big play is huge! It is so hard to slowly March down the field and put up 28 points plus. So much can go wrong on them 10-12 play drives. Penalties turnovers etc etc. Sadly mike Wallace will be gone after this year. They are not getting the return on their investment. Sadly it is because of the lack of the deep ball from tannehill. Now before I start getting bashed let me say I really like tannehill. Is short and intermediate game is great right now. He has to work on the deep ball during the offseason though. If we don't see any big plays next year then consider me extremely worried about the direction of this franchise.

That's from their sample statistics page and is outdated. Based on the real, current info, Tannehill throws passes 20+ yards in the air 8% of the time, which is in the 0th percentile in the league, and he completes those passes 32.4% of the time, which is in the 17th percentile in the league, among QBs who have attempted 50% or more of their team's passes. The bigger problem here is that his yards per attempt (YPA) on those passes is a mere 7.5, which is well below the league average of 12.9 and places him again in the 0th percentile. And this is after subtracting dropped passes from numbers of attempts for all QBs in the league. Essentially the team's downfield passing game is nearly non-existent, and when it does exist, it underperforms that of almost every team in the league. In fact, Tannehill's downfield YPA number is about the minimum you'd want from your QB on all passes, not just downfield ones, while the average QB in the league has a YPA on downfield passes of about 4.5 yards greater. It's little wonder he's completing 70% of his passes overall on a routine basis -- the game has shrunken into a much smaller field for him.

Brady actually throws a pretty terrible deep ball. He always has minus when he had Moss.

I don't think you'll ever see anyone disagred. Where people that defend Tannehill have an issue.. Is when people say he can't hit the deep ball, when his issue has primarily been with one player. There were players like say Chad Pennington that didn't have the arm strength and clearly Tannehill is not lacking of arm strength.

I have no doubt at some point we will all look back and go, remember when people would complain about 17s deep ball? Tom Brady used to get flamed up here in New England that he couldn't hit the deep ball. But he worked on his arm strength and mechanics and got Randy Moss. No more complaints about deep ball.

Until I see a % that only counts when a QB has a clean pocket to throw from and a WR with a step the % will really mean nothing to me. Too many factors on a deep ball to compare QBs.

That is a great point ! It always looks like Tanny and Wallace are not on the same play because of the constant pressure he is under..darn, a few times please give them 3 - 3.5 seconds for him to drop back and Wallace to run his proper route and then Tanny can get his feet set and put his all into the pass....BINGO !! Guess What? Yep....you got it !!!! TD 6 POINTS...Woooo Wooooooooo

Once again, it's worth noting that in his rookie season, Ryan Tannehill was #7 in the league in the % of his deep passes that were accurate, and Brian Hartline was #8 in the league in deep yardage.

    It's a Mike Wallace problem.

While the completion rate may be very low. I do think it is very important for QB's to try and stretch the field a few times each game by throwing the deep pass. This at least prevents defenses from just trying to stop the short pass.

I think part part of the reason the Dolphins have trouble moving the ball in the 4th quarter is because opposing defenses aren't worried about the deep ball at all. They just play tighter coverage on the receivers in an effort to take away the short pass.

I think the Dolphins should attempt 3-4 deep throws every game to keep the defenses honest. You never know, maybe they will actually complete a deep pass if they attempt more than one a game.

The problem isn't necessarily that he isn't completing deep passes at a high enough %. It's that he's not attempting them at a high enough %. And it's a problem because we don't get enough YAC to make up for the lack of yards we should expect from big plays. Though, when I say problem, it's not a huge one and it's not just something to be laid solely at Tannehill's feet. We're still a decent offense and good team without the big plays. It's just harder to make the transition from decent offense to very good without the big plays.

Marino could consistently hit the deep ball. Got us nowhere.
You put the defense back onto the field too fast.
    It's a track meet mentality.
It would be nice to hit once in a while which Wallace blew the opportunity on Monday night because of his poor range.
I prefer the meat and potatoes 10 play 7 minute drive that wears down the opposing defense and keeps our defense off the field.

absolutely, this is ridiculous, imo Ryan has completed what I consider 1 deep ball all season, and that was on the run, but 0 on time, in rhythm and with sufficient yardage attached, but like I said, I don't think its a big deal, as long as the arm strength and speed is relevant.

I prefer longer drives as well.

However as a fan I know its unrealistic to expect sustained drives every possession. In my opinion what the deep ball does is keep the defense honest in close games and allows you to stick with the run for a longer period if time before they clamp down on it. It also makes it easier to come back when you're down by a TD or more.

I wouldn't say you're a fairweather fan, as generally, I think that anyone who is posting on a forum for their team is more into it than an average fan. That being said, I don't really get why people seemingly always want to bash on the players on our team. Tannehill has been a lightning rod for criticism since he was drafted, much like Henne before him, and Ginn, and Chambers, or Fiedler, or whoever. If they're on the team, support them. I've been critical of Wallace for some things, but I've also stated numerous times that I'm pleased with his increased effort this year, and I've acknowledged the good things he's done, such as his tds, blocking, etc. One can be critical, like saying that Wallace isn't worth his contract for various reasons, while still supporting the player. One can also view Tannehill as needing improvement (everyone, I think, realizes this), but appreciate the improvement in his game every season so far. I think the problems arise when some posters seem to come across as believing that Tannehill is as good as he will ever be, and they don't seem to post anything positive about him. Then, when they say that they support him, they seem to be disingenuous, because all they ever post is what is wrong with him.

So you agree their may be something wrong with him??

I haven't seen any post bashing Ryan in this thread at all, some honesty.....and a guy with very high expectations. Nothing wrong with either. Ryan and the staff have came out and said some of the same things themselves.

This year? The problem may very well be in the lack of volume, but it's a problem.

Simple fact of the matter, is that since London, Tannehill has not been the problem for any game there on and has been a big part of all the wins.

People complaining about Tannehill at this point either have unrealistic expectations or find comfort in crying about the QB.

No, I don't agree there is something "wrong" with him. I agreed that he had areas to improve, but that to me Doesn't mean something is "wrong." It also doesn't mean that I think the issues are necessarily Tannehill's fault, our that he is able to fix the problems.

Also, why did everyone focus on the thread we're in? When I speak in generalities about ripping on Tannehill, it's speaking to posts in the forum in general.

There are some people who still believe you only judge a QB by wins. I guess they don't realize the same Tebow who couldn't lose with Denver couldn't win anywhere else or that the same Sanchez that sucked for the Jets is winning for the Eagles.

This is football and the other 52 guys matter a hell of a lot. Great QBs do have more impact but at the same time they need their team to win games as well.

One could also argue that just about any team is going to be affected negatively by being lopsided to an extreme in some area. Again, the Dolphins' offense attempts of passes of 20+ yards in the air places it in the 0th percentile in the league. That's an extreme if there ever was one, and I can't imagine that helps the team be as competitive as the teams that have a more typical percentage of passes downfield, especially when that sort of game is needed. Heaven forbid the Dolphins should ever get down on the scoreboard by three scores or more. They'd be forced to play the kind of game on offense to which they're very unaccustomed, and I can't imagine they'd be very proficient at it. Consequently they'd have little chance of coming back.

The deep ball isn't the end all be all of offensive production. Fair enough. But lets not pretend it doesn't matter. Forcing safeties to play back and/or double cover deep threats opens up other aspects of the offense. Besides, not every drive can be 7+ minutes. Points are points. Take em when you can get em. Besides, the NFL's new contact rules are very different. Even minor contact draws flags, which makes the deep ball even more valuable.

And if Don Shula could of given Marino a defense, it wouldn't have been an issue.

It's OK to criticize aspects of Tannehill's game w/o trying to make him look bad overall. Tannehill has been great these last number of weeks. I see no reason to believe he won't continue to play at a high level at this point. It doesn't change his inability to throw successful 9 routes. And it wastes Mike Wallace's best ability.

I think something else to consider is, alot of the so called deep ball "bombs" are a result of broken plays. By nature, our offesnse is a timing based progression read passing game..and I dont believe we really have that many "broken" plays.

Are they not being called or is Tannehill just not throwing them. It seemed there were several (over 20 yards) that Tannehill did not throw. MNF showed at least 3 of them where the receiver was wide open. Some can blame progressions, but we really dont know what progression that deep ball was. Wallace dropped one. HE way over threw Gibson on another.... the others were not thrown.

  39. vt_dolfan

some of those were not thrown because the deep player was not the first read..and the first read player was open.
