    Scenario:

    Step 1: We Fire Philbin
Step 2: We Hire Rex Ryan to be our HC. Rex can decide to keep Lazor or not.

I'd really feel safer if Lazor accepted a promotion to assistant head coach and ran the offense. Not because I think Lazor is gods gift to offense but rather because I'm not sure Ryan has a handle on choosing an OC based on the past.

I'd be 100% fine with Ryan as HC but I'd prefer his interaction with the offense was more in terms of running practice, motivating and watching film.

With Ryan as HC, we would certainly see an upgrade and more consistency on defense. We would also see a gradual deterioration of the offense and Tannehill. Ryan is ground and pound.

I don't know if the head 2 head record vs the Jets is having some type of odd effect on Miami fans - but Rex Ryan is a BAD headcoach.

His teams have gone from bad to worse since the heady days of 2010/11 - a roster mainly built by other head coaches.

Look at his defence this year:

    24th in PPG conceded
30th in 3rd down conversions allowed
    31st in opposition QB rating
    30th in takeaways per game

Honestly, as a Patriots fan i'd love to see this guy get a gig in Miami!

Rex Ryan does not have the mental capacity to be a headcoach - he simply cannot compute all the variables quick enough to make a decision without wasting timouts and/or making an error. Outside of defensive linemen, his record at drafting (and yes, he does have a rather large say on draft day) is absolutely abysmal - not to say Sanchez or Geno are, or ever would have been, great QB's - but he has absolutely destroyed both of those guys with an admitted lack of attention to the offensive side of the ball.

It's also no coincidence that, whichever OC they have, the Failcat is a steady staple of their offensive philosophy.

You guys are crazy to be lobbying for this guy.

His entire roster sucks. There's like 3 guys I'd take on their team.

How much say do you think he has in the draft? This past draft alone he said he got 1 pick. That was Tahj Boyd in the 6th.

Hiring Rex Ryan would allow us to keep Lazor and Rex focus on the defense.

Comments like this drive me absolutely nuts. You're taking ONE STAT and preaching gospel from it. There is SO MUCH MORE that goes into a team's record than just, "How good is the head coach?"

Belichick was 36-44 as a head coach in Cleveland, man. Stop it. Seriously. :pity:

Maybe Rex could get lucky with his 2nd NFL head coaching job and pick a HOF QB with a throw-away draft pick, and then cheat his way to 3 Superbowl victories. It happens, you know.

Have to be honest, I am warming up to the idea. My first choice would be Todd Bowles, Rex is right after him.

There is something strange about Mr. Harbaugh.

I admit, Philbin is not the guy.

I'll sign off on Rex, because I doubt Malzahn makes the jump this year.

But, I respectfully ask every poster who wants Rex AND who was outraged at Bullygate to at least, admit their outrage was phony or they don't really want Rex. It cannot be both.

I think you should absolutely be interviewing coaches whom have been to multiple conference Championships but haven't won a Super Bowl.

You've got a guy whose team has performed at a high level and has experience, but you're not betting on a guy being the first person to win a Super Bowl on two different teams. That's a good gamble in my book.

Rex is my first choice. I would be very enthusiastic from day 1 and excited w him at the helm. Really hoping it happens. He already hates the pats and now would hate the jets more. Bring me Rex.

Anyone who was "outraged" at the players antics during Bullygate, should be against Rex. His teams have been notoriously undisciplined in virtually the same ways and he is on Hardknocks ordering a Code Red on a player...which is something these people were upset that Ireland supposedly suggested for a player on our team.

I'd prefer Harbaugh, but I also believe Rex Ryan is a good head coach who has been stuck with a terrible GM and thus terrible talent for the past 2 seasons. Rex Ryan could be a phenomenal consolation prize.

Hell, I'd be down for Rex just because if for no other reason it would make the Jets vs. Dolphins rivalry even better.

Never was offended by bully gate. I was on the side it was normal locker room antics with a guy that was overly sensitive and the media getting a ahold of a juicy story to spin their way for views....
Bring on Rex! (With a few stipulations)

Yawn. Philbin is the "good guy" the "image guy" the "professional" but bullygate happened on his watch while he was looking for gum wrappers. But, yeah I'll also go on record saying bullygate was overblown media nonsense. I was not outraged.

Right, because unless he did EXACTLY the same thing its not a valid comparison, right?

    Sigh.

His teams have always been thuggish and undisciplined. Rex himself ordered a Code Red on Gholston on camera. These are the types of things many on here cried about and those same people want Rex here. It is hypocritical.

Understood, but I asked you to clarify your initial statement, and I still see nothing like bullygate w Rex, even for those ppl who wer e "outraged" which I think k are few and far between, and probably people who don't like Rex anyway, for preferred nice reasons (or beliefs in feminism lol) I believe Rex was close enough to his players that if it got to the point a guy was really uncomfortable he would be aware of it. If a subordinate coach did it I think k he'd know. This is way different from Philbin, who has zero control and is oblivious to the locker room.

I've always thought Rex Ryan was a better coach than for which he's commonly given credit.

I thought he got saddled with bad quarterbacks and just as bad personnel choices. One reason I don't like Tannenbaum being so close to this situation is he made a lot of those personnel calls...between drafting Mark Sanchez, giving him a ludicrous contract extension, bringing in Tim Tebow, I mean you read through some of this stuff and you're thinking holy hell I don't want this guy anywhere near us.

That said I've all but given up hope that Ryan will have anything valuable to say on the offensive side of the ball and that is worrisome because coaching a team is not about making one set of decisions in the first off season and then letting it run for a decade. Those decisions need to be made every year based on situations that are commonly WAY more fluid than fans generally believe.

For example, everyone WANTS to believe Ryan Tannehill is the guy but we don't know that. We really don't. Yet we're going to have to pay him what, like $20 million a year pretty soon? To possibly be another Jay Cutler or someone like that? There could be decisions to be made here, HARD decisions about the offense and the quarterback, and when has Rex Ryan given us any indication he can make those decisions or even give valuable input?

Similarly everyone WANTS to believe Bill Lazor is the guy, but we don't know that. We don't. At all. His offense has STUNK in a lot of games this year. Sure he brings with him the bare bones of the Chip Kelly offense. But the Chip Kelly offense without Chip Kelly tempo is like a 5 dollar hooker shoved into a designer dress. You're still getting the clap so what's the big deal?

Definitely. If only as a DC. Wouldn't mind as a HC if there's no one else.
As MB stated, that GM up there in NY has his head up his ***; getting rid of Tannenbaum was a huge mistake.

I really don't understand the thinking for NOT liking Rex as a potential HC.

You can basically guarantee any team of his as top 10 in D every year.
His team undeniably loves playing for him and plays hard.

Who else can you say that for? The only thing he has to figure out is not having Sanchez or Geno be his QB.

    I agree entirely.

We're dealing with overwhelming uncertainty in many areas. Several of the fans don't seem to appreciate that and so wild opinions abound.

I already know we're not "there" as a team so I don't need more people complaining about the owner, the coaches and the players.

The challenge is to put forth options. I'm willing to listen to anybody's logic if they can make a case.

Unless I hear something that is clearly a better path forward, I'll be inclined to hold fast. And besides, you don't just throw away prospects like Tannehill, so we'll be seeing what he's got whether it's good or bad.
