TB probably wants guys with more service time. Plus Cashner is good when healthy, key word is healthy. I'm just surprised TB is giving up on Myers so quickly.
Word is the Nationals are available as well. I think I will be happy with the return. Myers ceiling with his current swing is basically an above average player. Nothing more. Hopefully for his sake his swing changes dramatically. But its just not set up to sustain success.
Me too actually. I don't think they understand the swing greatly, so it surprises me they are jumping ship on him. Although his 293 BABIP while hitting 222 doesnt show much of a fluke.
Could be as simple as Friedman was a Myers fan while their new GM isn't but even so they're probably selling him low right now.
Well I am not sure we are selling low, because if Myers goes out and shows last year wasnt a fluke, his market will be nearly non existent. I think there is still some residue from top prospect and his rookie of the year campaign.
He's coming off a year where he played in only 87 games due to injury and hit .222/.294/.320/.614, I doubt the Rays are getting real value for him right now.
Their not getting rookie of the year value if that is what you think is his real value..then no. But I dont think that is his real value, and I dont think the Rays think that either. Id be willing to bet they dont get 614 OPS value.
I believe there are GM's out there that believe his ceiling is high....I bet the package is decent for him...
I agree about GMs thinking his ceiling is still high however those GMs will have leverage with the Rays as Myers is coming off of a down year where he was hurt. The Rays aren't going to get the same return for Myers as they would have if they tried to shop him after the 2013 season.
So the 3 team trade looks like this: Padres get: Wil Myers - OF Ryan Hanigan - C Jose Castillo - LHP Gerardo Reyes - RHP Nationals get: Joe Ross - RHP PTBNL (which will be Trea Turner - SS which won't be official until June 13th since he was drafted last year and drafted players can't be officially traded for 1 year, yes stupid rule) Rays get: Steven Souza - OF Rene Rivera - C Bursh Smith - RHP Jake Bauers - 1B Travis Ott - LHP Really don't understand this deal for the Rays, I'd rather have just traded Myers for Ross and Turner as they would probably slot in to be the Rays' #1 and #2 prospects. Washington looks like it got 2 pretty good prospects and even the Padres did well to get 4 years of Myers. Really just a strange trade by TB, even if they cooled on Myers, I feel like they probably could have gotten more for him.
Me neither. Although it is a bit funny to see Ryan Hanigan get traded only a year after nearly 99% of the media was prasing TB for "stealing" from from the Reds, which lead to a lot of Twitter jokes such as "Hey the Rays made a trade? I love it.... so who did they give up and who did they get?". The Astros are another team that the media seems to love and gets high marks for whatever move they make too.
We will see. I think Sauza is potentially a better player this year then Myers. I like Burch Smith and Jake Bauers. Hope for our sake last year was not a fluke for Rivera. If not I think this trade makes us better today. I hope Myers can fix some things and reach his potential, but I am not going to hold my breath on it. Best of luck in San Diego!
Padres are close to trading for Justin Upton. Wonder what Padre31 thinks of all of these moves in getting Upton, Kemp, Wil Myers, Derek Norris, Morrow, Johnson etc.
Whata fun offseason so far huh? Can't remember the last time there were this many trades and teams completely turning over their rosters so much.
Gunna be fun to watch this year for sure, unfolding like crazy! Jake Peavy signed a 2 year deal with Giants.
There are still a lot of FAs out there and still think we'll see a few more big trades before ST starts.
Couple more trades that are close: Will Middlebrooks to SD for Ryan Hanigan to BOS Yankees trading David Phelps and Martin Prado to the Marlins for Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Jones
Dont mind it......they are also saying a prospect coming to NY as well...I just really like that hopefullllyyyyyy they are signing Shields or Scherzer... They got Domingo German as well.....seems pretty impressive..... http://www.baseball-reference.com/m...rect&utm_medium=linker-www.mlbtraderumors.com
Good deal for both teams I think. Yanks get a young, cheap #4 or #5 starter and an interesting pitching prospect. Marlins get $8 million cash, $5 million in relief by dumping Jones and much much needed IF help.
I've never seen him pitch, but his minor league numbers remind of Eovaldi, actually. Throws hard, as well.
He's interesting. Never really considered a top prospect in our crappy system but has good stuff apparently and has good numbers. Pretty old for his level though. Certainly someone to keep an eye on.
Figured. I still don't buy that the Yankees are out of it until Scherzer or even Shields officially signs elsewhere.
Crazy to think that Betences is probably going to be the best of the "Killer B's". Pitching prospects, man so unpredictable.
Carpenter's a good pickup. He'll remind you a bit of Kimbrel though of course his stuff isn't as dominant.
Many people predicting the Pads come away with him, which out there he will do very well for himself....
I am happy for Biggio - although I put him in the class of players that fringe the HoF, played against him in college (and Mo Vaughn), and summer leagues. Al Leiter was my next closest nemesis during HS reign. Springsteen's Glory Days always comes to mind!
Yanks need 1 more quality SP, Drew is band-aid for rotantial 2B job vs RH, and Yanks with all their switch hitters will more than likely have 1-9 all lefties (Yes, AROD rides the pine if not cut/traded, etc) in the box vs LH. In AL East I believe 16 of 20 opposing starters are RH. Just interesting tidbits.
