Just earlier this year, when healthy, we were talking about this being an elite defense... Why do so many of you want him gone?
I don't hate Coyle, but I don't think he's above average. The mere fact that defensive players had to convince him to start bringing a safety down into the box as the Jets were setting team records for rushing against us is... well, it's the players having to do the coach's job. That's not cool. I also think amazing D.C.'s are confident they'll have an answer for anything an offense throws at them. I didn't like Coyle's "There's nothin I can do" attitude about facing Peyton Manning. It felt like a coach who really has no answers or ideas to help negate the other team's strength. That, to me, is the definiteion of an average coach. Not smart enough to out-scheme any of the top teams, talent or coaches. I mean, he's okay, but we could upgrade.
Also.... Jelani Jenkins would not have seen the field if Ellerbe doesn't get injured. To me, it's an indictment of the coaching staff when an amazing player is not seeing the field because it means they are mismanaging roster talent. I wish more coaches would just play the most talented players, regardless of age, experience, or salary. Not to mention it took him three years to figure out that Dion Jordan is an OLB. PRE-DRAFT we were all saying that here. So... yeah, players knowing more than you and posters here knowing more than you on ANY defensive issue is not impressive to me. I give him slack for the number of CB injuries he had to deal with, but still.... average D.C.
In the many years as a fins fan, we've seen our team in ups and downs. In the post-Shula era, we've see more downs than ups, but it's always been about the O not performing like it should... This year and to a large extent last year, if you look at our crucial losses or even near wins, it's been on the D... Coyle has not gotten the job done. At no point this year did I feel this D was elite, but that's JMHO. I think Coyle should move on because he hasn't accomplished here what he should have....
So if Jones turns his head a second faster and wheeler wasn't a complete liability in coverage, would you feel different?
No...this D hasn't lived up to where it was even last year, when it was a liability as well. There have been a slew of plays that could have made differences...not just one or two, not just this year or last year... It's time for a change. If you ask most they can't tell you if this is a 3/4, 4/3 or hybrid or what scheme it is...it's a mish-mash scheme with seemingly no direction...that's on the staff...JMO, but I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel for this scheme/staff...
The defense was never elite. The entire scheme is pretty damn bad. Coyle defenses are always going to give up a lot of yards against good teams. In order for Coyle to succeed he needs elite play in the redzone to turn 7's into 3'. The problem with that is while it works against bad offensive teams it will never work against the better teams in the league.
Ok, Coyle is fired then...who do you replace him with? Most are defaulting to Rex Ryan, but let's be honest, he will be a HC some where next year, so he isn't a viable option. Who do you get that is realistically better than Coyle?
The problem with Coyle might be the fact that apparently (according to Salguero) "the defense has dropped from sixth before Philbin and Coyle arrived, to seventh, to eighth to 18th in scoring defense this year." Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/#storylink=cpy"
Really wouldn't break my heart to see him go...but have no idea if that's even a possibility. Should be, IMHO, but I'm not an HC.
A better defensive coordinator would get more out of the players, but the players have many, many flaws. All of the defensive ends are not disciplined. That has led to numerous reverses. Good defensive ends at the high school level are disciplined about trailing the ball. It is ludicrous to fail at this as a pro. Shelby is atrocious with discipline. Discipline is the largest flaw in Wake's game. He is a probowl pass rusher, but it is hard to call him a complete player.
better than average defensive back field coach, but not a quality defensive coordinator. he's drowning & taking the entire team down with him. time to upgrade & move on...
It's really not all on the players even though people seem to think it is. Keeping contain isn't a player skill as much as its a mental skill instilled by coaching and trust in the defense. You practice these things during the week. I mean if your opponent runs a lot of plays off right tackle and you run the scout team offense against your defense all week but don't correct your ends when they are crashing down....it doesn't matter how smart the player is really. It's about knowing what your opponent likes to do. Its about feeling comfortable with your teammates to make the plays you can't, it's about knowing your opponents tendencies, it's about knowing when to crash and when to maintain the edge. It's not a cut and dry thing to me.
Is the Jenkins issue a Coyle or Philbin issue? I mean, can't we say the same thing about Dallas Thomas? and i think the Dolphins need to fire Coyle but I think they won't.
Can't adjust to stop the pics to free Decker all game. Amature. Take Rizzi with you and also get a coordinator that can pick up a 3-5 man rush.
We got Lazor by getting rid of Sherman and upped our offense by several points scored per game. I'd really like to find our defensive equivalent. Hopefully Philbin isn't as in love with Coyle as he is Sherman.
There are personnel issues, but they reaction/non-reaction to them is in a lot of cases compounding the issue. Things like the Dolphins players basically having to go to Coyle and asking him to drop a safety in the box to react to them getting destroyed in the run game is a bit ridiculous. It's also pretty clear that there's problems in the defensive side of the locker room.
Soooo frustrating. I played OLB in HS. Even then the number one job was contain. You are the end. You contain first. First. Other things are second.
I have problems w/ him. Two games against the Jets and he has been out coached. For this team to win the ST has to be at least a wash. If they underperform we have to be awesome to overcome.
We just gave up 37 points at home to a team that was 29th in points scored per game coming into this game. The defense had some outlier games where it allowed very few points (San Diego and Buffalo) and then several where the offenses were really terrible (Oakland, Chicago, Jacksonville, NY). Other than flukes and feasting on terrible offenses the defense wasn't good. I'm not sure it's all on Coyle. But you have to at least start looking at him for the problems with the defense.
The defense has been atrocious on third down and in second halves since he's been here. Injuries or no injuries, the problems have been the same. Get rid of him. He's terrible. I'd throw so much money at Sexy Rexy. Shouldn't even take much...having the satisfaction of destroying your douchebag ex-bosses in NY twice a year, and getting to the playoffs over them should be enough incentive to come to Miami.
Coyle has been terrible in regards to in game adjustments....pathetic even. There is undoubtedly a divide within that unit, and the biggest culprit is Coyle.
That sounds reasonable, but it goes against everything learned from my coaches. There is one and only one unforgivable sin as a defensive end. Losing contain cannot happen. Getting hooked, a crack back, even run over is a lost one on one battle. Being out of position is a lack of discipline. Do your job. Do not try to do someone else's job. I agree coaching is part of it, but these are professional football players. This mistake should happen once and only once.
I truly do not think he is. If there is a better option out there who would take the position, I think he pulls the trigger.
because he sucks and should be fired. Mike smith should be available soon from atl, or basically any other defensive coach could be better at this point.
Hes not gonna fire Coyle unless he's forced to do so just like Sherman. If Philbin had his way Sherman would still be our offensive coordinator
Mike Smith could have some head coaching jobs available to him, Even with the last two seasons being sub .500 he still has a good .589 W-L pct, but if not, he'd be at the top of my list for best choice for DC. He was very good when he was DC for the Jags. In 5 yrs in that role, he defenses were 6th, 11th, 6th, 2nd and 12th in total yards, and 18th, 7th, 6th, 4th, and 10th in points allowed. Compared to any other potential DCs that I know of, such as Slowik, Nolan, and Spagnuolo, Mike Smith has the best results previously as a DC.
Football coaches are supposed to know what will work in a given situation and tell the players how to execute it. That's why they're called coaches. Coyle doesn't know what will work, and it seems like every other coach knows what will work against Coyle's defense. Coyle is then unable to adjust to stop what the opposing coaches do. These players came from the same talent pool from which every other team's players were drawn. One or two may be outstanding and one or two may be poor, but an entire unit cannot be all substandard. The difference is Coyle's cluelessness.
