I think that is the case. I believe we have to pick it up rather soon.

    I'm just saying why though?

Why not let him play out the 4th year. If he's a stud, or is playing well, then just pay him mid-year. And if he would prefer to hit the open market, I feel pretty good that if we offer him the most, he'll come back to Miami, especially if he's had another great year with Lazor and the team performed well. If we didn't, then move on.

I wouldn't let the thought of FA scare Miami personally.

    Name one.

All of the "great QB's in our generation have gone to the playoffs within their first 3 years...and I quote "great" because some say some of these guys aren't or are.

    Rodgers
    Brees
    Brady
    Manning
    Manning
    Flacco
    Roethlisberger
    Wilson
    Rivers
    Ryan
    Favre
    Warner
    McNabb
    Moon
    Elway
    Marino
    Aikman
    Young
    Montana
    Everett
    Cunningham

I mean those are all the "great" QBs dating back to 1990 with great being very subjective. Yet, I blurred the lines with almost every one of them including guys like Cunningham & Everett, Wilson, Flacco, etc.

I mean anyone that has been considered a franchise QB, or "great" in your words has made the playoffs within their first 3 years of starting at QB.

thank you! That same scenario payed off for Baltimore and Joe Flacco as BAL won the SB before paying Flacco. Hopefully same thing happens for us.

They all had great OL, great D though... RT17 is first ever QB to have bad OL and bad D.

Here's my issue with the post. Not one comment on how the dude hung in there several times to deliver a strike 15-20 yards down the field and get crushed doing so. All I hear is crying that he doesn't run enough. I dont hear one critique on anything other then running. What about all the other aspects of his play?

Man, 12-4 with a struggling D and a pedestrian Russell Wilson, in the toughest division in the league no less. Not to mention the Percy Harvin drama. Just imagine what they would be if they were firing on all cylinders all season.

I think they were in every game too except maybe the Chargers game. St. Louis finished it on a fake punt similar to what the Jets did to us. The D gave up a long TD to Dallas and Wilson failed to drive for the comeback. And against KC it was a 4 point game that he failed to drive for the comeback late in the game.

I'm not going on depth into that list, but the first 8 guys in that list indeed had one or both good/great olines/defense.

Keep him and draft competition don't throw him away until you know you have a better option on hand.

Tannehill has managed to stay healthy enough to play with the crappy line so he has some skill.

The fact is that every time Seattle's D allowed 24 points or more this year they lost. Some here want to claim that Tannehill just didn't score enough points yesterday as evidence that he's not a tier 1 guy (I agree he isn't a tier 1 guy), but the exact same criticism applies to Wilson. Wilson last year produced 4,324 total yards, 26 TDs and 18 INTs/FUM (passing and rushing) compared to RT's 4,356 total yards, 28 TDs and 21 INTs/FUM. These guys are basically interchangeable. The difference is that Wilson wins behind that great D and run game and people see the plays he makes as the reason. Tannehill makes just as many plays, but his team loses so everybody forgets or glosses over the plays he made. And I'm not saying this to disparage Wilson. He's one of my favorite players. But the fact is that while he makes plays differently than RT does, he doesn't make anymore than RT does. People just get so distracted by the team win totals and place an inordinate amount of praise or blame on the QB.

Geez DJ, you always get so damn focused on a particular thought that you have no ability to see the forest through the trees. You keep bringing up Tannehill's inability to move in the pocket. I'd counter with, the plays you are focusing on, there was no pocket.

most of those players you named had teams that had been playoff teams already prior to them starting.

brady came into a situation with new england where they had been in the playoffs in 1996(went to the suprbowl) 1997,1998, and was 8-8 in 1999 missing a playoff birth by 1 game.
marino came in 1983 when the team just reached the ****ing superbowl the year before.
aaron rodgers sat for 3 seasons behind favre and took over a team that went 13-3 the previous year and went to the NFC championship game
steve young took over a team that went 14-2 and went to the NFC champinship game and had been in the playoffs 8 of the last 9 years
troy aikman was massacred until they brought in all the talent they brought in(seriously go look at all the talent they had)
phillip rivers came in after the chargers just had 2 back to back winning seasons (12-4)(9-7)
kurt warner came onto a team that has potentially 2 hall of fame receivers and a hall of fame running back.......
ben roethlisberger- came into a team that had been in the playoffs 2 out of 3 years including a 13-3 season. look at roethlisbergers stats in his third year......18td 23int 3513 yards with a qb rating of 75
joe flacco- baltimore ravens were 13-3 in 2006 and had winning records in 3/5 seasons prior to his arrival

tannehill inherited a team that had 1 playoff birth in a decade, a fluke year where brady went out in the first drive of the season and a season that was all smoke and mirrors with the wildcat. once again teams win games and go to the playoffs not individuals......

Yes. Forget about not being good enough to start your first, second, or even third year... bench time doesn't count right? What devolopment could possibly happen on a NFL team for a young nonstarting QB?

If you define "plays" as a component of Brian Billick's "toxic differential" (plays gaining 20+ yards), Wilson was involved in 62 such plays in 2014 (54 passes, 8 rushes), while Tannehill was involved in 45 such plays (41 passes, 4 rushes).

    Trouble is, Fin..
DJ's post was nothing but a rant disguised as an analysis. He's had Tannehill in his sights for so long it is becoming repetitively obnoxious -

I remember when we used to have some posters on here who would bang their drum so loud we would walk away from them.
I am very close to doing something I have never done, and that is put a poster on ignore!

These are not similar. The average passer rating in 2001 was 77. Today it is 87.

Yep. Pretty sure he should have called a time out to make sure the special teams coach saw what me and the nine yr old boy sitting next to me saw coming on that fake punt. That was definitely Tannehills fault

Are yards, tds, and ints different now too? I know the rules favor the offense more now, but still...

I can agree that he doesn't have the best feel for the game, BUT I have seen marked improvement in other areas. It's weird that he reverts back to his "old ways" at times (especially when he gets pressured), and I will just chunk (we say "chunk" in Mississippi, not 'chuck' haha) it up to him having a bad game. For example, Roethlisberger had a few passes batted down against the Bengals last night. Sometimes, it just happens. From what I have seen this season from Tannehill, it has happened with less frequency. It is not the same problem he had in his first couple of years.

I do wish he would be more attentive in the pocket. Given, he was getting hammered out there. A big improvement I saw this year specifically, is that he makes really nice throws down the field amid pressure. THIS did not happen with much frequency in his first couple of years. He has grown tremendously in that department. I noticed that he also throws from different angles than in the past....and completing them! This is a huge step in his development as he becomes a better QB. He is still learning the idiosyncracies of the game. These learned nuances inevitably make him a better QB. I love, love, love these quick 3 yard passes in the Red Zone. This is more out of necessity because of the troubles in that area, BUT it is something at which he is becoming proficient.

I wonder, and this is just throwing it out there, that with his recent new found confidence in his down the field passing, he sort of forgot that he has a set of wheels that can gain some serious yardage when he's out of the pocket? I surmise this to be the case, of course, I may be way off.

While his pocket presence leaves a lot to be desired, I have seen marked improvement in some areas, which shows me he is learning and growing as a QB. The stats are solid, they really are. But these little things that he is beginning to do well really lead me to believe he is seriously working at his craft. Given this is his first year in this system, I am totally fine with that. To be quite honest, after the first few games, I was ready to write him off as an Alex Smith, or even worse, a Jason Campbell (both who were first-round QBs thrown into new systems year in and year out).

I see real improvement. And in the first year in this system, that's all I can ask for, because we all knew when he was drafted, he was a developmental QB. Four-thousand yards, 27 TDs, and 12/13 INTs is a pretty damned solid year statistically no matter what kaleidoscope we look through. For this, I cannot complain.

**Btw, I think because of Tannehill's improvement, Ross decided to stick it out with Philbin one more year. How bad would it be to put Tannehill in yet ANOTHER system in his fourth year? You're basically writing away his future if you do that. I think there is enough there in Tannehill to give him another year in this system to see if he can legitimately become a superstar. If he falls down next year, I say abandon the f***ing ship and let the coaching staff walk the planks. I sure as hell hope it doesn't happen, for Tannehill's sake.

Not that different. Brady was the 10th highest rated QB in 2002 (his third year) while RT is the 14th highest rated QB this year.

If thats the bar then okay he's better than Henne. Hes still mediocre and does not win just like Henne.

Under Harbaugh I would have had some confidence that Tannehill will lesrn how to win from a proven winner. Under Philbin hes not going to learn to win

Football Outsiders DYAR rankings over their first 3 years playing. As you can see all of the "elite" QBs have posted a top 10 DYAR at some point in their first 3 years, all except Flacco. I like DYAR or DVOA because it better allows you to compare QBs over different eras.

Flacco just got in the top 10 for the first time this season. Every other SB winning QB for quite some time had a passer thats been in the top 10 in DYAR at some point prior to winning the SB. Flacco is an anomaly with a great GM/Head Coach, is that something we should be striving for? Or is it easier to just try to find a QB?

just go back 5 years to 2009

    kurt warner 26td 14 int 3,753 yds 93.2 rating
    tom brady 28td 13 int 4,398 yds 96.2 rating
    ben roethlisberger 26td 12 int 4,328 yds 100.5 rating

    ryan tannehill
    27 td 12 int 4,045 yards 92.8 rating.

yet people want to make it out to be tannehill is some kind of mediocre qb who can't take us all the way. kurt warner, tom brady, roethlisberger were all veterans at this point, tannehill just complete his third year after having limited experience in college. the guy hasnt plateaued and hasnt had all that much help when it comes to an oline. people saying tannehill cant win the superbowl and bring up someone like eli manning who in 2008 won a superbowl with 21 td 10 int 3300 yds passing and a qb rating of 86.4

It's somewhat interesting, but considering Tannehill had such little time in college at QB, compared to these other guys, shouldn't that factor in how we look at them? And, for Rodgers, is that his first three years, or first three years starting?

The thing is, I disagree with DJ on a handful of those gripes and agree with some of the replies. But when you have a poster or two just straight trolling him and claiming he is stupid or brings nothing rubs me wrong. I recieved "points" for poking fun at the Florida Gators in their thread for "trolling"....and I had one post with about 7 words. And that was from a high ranked Admin. Yet I have to see some people flat out be douchebags to this guy it angers me. He's a good poster.

These kids can be a prick to me because I'm quite often a prick back, it doesn't offend me and only weak minded people hold grudges. I guess that even though DJ imo is off base on his analysis of Ryan as a whole he deserves a lot more respect than he is getting from posters and staff.

    First 3 years playing.

In looking at some of the rookies from the last two years the DYAR stats don't look good for their long term outlook, and I was kind of impressed in watching Carr and Bridgewater. Glennon is the highest ranked of all the 1 or 2 year QBs but even he doesn't crack the top 20. We seem to be in quite a drought as far as elite QBs go.

Right...so is that after he sat the bench for like 4 seasons? Because what use is looking at Rodgers stats from preseason or if he happened to be in a game in garbage time?

I can get with most of what you're saying, but why characterize someone's post as "crying"

Can we stop insulting each other constantly?

It makes it harder to focus on the actual good content in the posts.
