...as fans with what direction this team is going in. Worse even than last year even thou we are a better team. Cutting ties with as many FA's as possible might help improve this teams ability to make the necessary improvements needed to get the right players. But do we have the management and coaching in place to make that happen "aka...in Bill we trust (NE)"? Probably no. Dallas did it. I would like to stay the course in the draft by first addressing both lines with two OG or a OG and OT early and one big DT with the first three picks. I hope this is the direction we take or we might again be at the same place in one year. What this hopefully will accomplish too is to help T-hill and the late season collapse on defense to improve. Second importance is FS and LB in the draft and in FA. As firing any one I would like Coyle gone because I don't trust his work and I think Rex would greatly improve not only the D but help with team morale. He brings that tough yesteryear smash mouth F-ball. Secondly new kicker period, don't trust him one bit. Two questions. How soon can Coyle be gone and how good is our chances in getting Rex? Think he would be of the D? He'll probably take the Oakland vacancy but think he'd prefer MIA should listen to what he'd want? is it too late to fire our HC(not a fan of his player motivation policy)?

I think there is a pretty good possibility that Coyle is removed, but as for Rex there is a 0% chance he'll be coaching on the Dolphins next year. He's already stated mulitple times that he will NOT be a D-Coordinator and is only looking for a HC spot, or take the year off.

Rex wants a HC job or he'll revert to the media (as has been reported)... Coyle should be gone by now, but you know Ross does not like to let guys out of their contracts, so it won't be a shocker if he ends up staying here, at least to me. Philbin/Hickey won't do a wipe out of this roster, not with both their jobs on the line this coming year. I like what Hickey has done, but the jury is still out because you can't judge these players on one year...

I see them loading up with mid-tier guys to fill as many holes as they can in FA...not necessarily making splashes, but guys that can play if push comes to shove. One of the worst problems we had this year and quite a bit last year was that when we did have injuries, the guys coming in just couldn't get the job done...For example, I don't think Trusnik makes too many rosters, but there he was starting a few games for us... As a fan, I don't think any of us really know the direction this team is going to take. We know that Philbin is Philbin and can't get his charges fired up to save his life, much less his job. Hickey seemed to do ok last year, but can we really evaluate him yet ? We have a dozen or so guys that are FAs very few are worth keeping around...but you can't let everyone go either... We are truly an enigma this coming offseason....we'll know more in May...but until then, all we, as fans are doing is wallowing in our mediocrity...

i don´t know whats up with all that Trusnik hate, he was pretty servicable as a backup this year and didn´t embarrass himself in spot start duty either, for the money he gets paid, he was actually pretty good

How are we a better team when we finished with the same freaking record? Oh, stats! Meaningless stats.

It was reported earlier today that Ryan has an interview already scheduled with ESPN.

As others have already stated, Ryan will be a head coach or working in television next season. He has no interest at all in being a DC in the NFL.

I love over how some people love to quote stats to try and convince others that this team is somehow better than it's record indicates it is.

Because even if the stats on offense improved this year, the defense totally collapsed over the last month of the season and for the fourth year in a row, their point total given up to opposing offenses has risen.

It's a team game. Not a stats game. Overall the team this year was inferior to the team which went 8-8 last year and that is all that really matters.

Tough call whether to go OL, Defense or skill players. That's why you should always go BPA. We had like a 35 pt avg scored on us since the Denver game? Take BPA and hope to churn out the bottom of the roster, Jimmy Wilson, Trusnick, Dallas Thomas, Gardner, Stafford, Pouncey, Wheeler, Daniel Thomas, Finnegan, Fox, College. Pouncey and Gardner may be ok, but you can't just focus on needs because obviously there are so many. BPA, BPA, BPA. Move down and BPA. QUIT MOVING UP!

Even better, fire Philbin and hire Rex to be the head coach. If he wants to keep Lazor as the OC, great. If he doesn't I have no problem with that either. I just think Ryan is a far superior HC when compared to Mediocre Philbin.

    Exactly.

I say draft the player that fits your scheme, which likely would mean moving down and collecting draft pics in the process.

I don't like Rex running the offensive side of things. But overall, I think if you just substituted Rex for Philbin this year we would have had an away playoff game.

Stats are created by team play. You cannot have more passing yards if that aspect of the entire team didn't improve.

Right now this feels a lot like when Jimmy Johnson took over and the offense started to go to **** and the defense took over.

Now it seems like the opposite.

I have good hopes for the offense next season. The defense scares the **** out of me.

With a good offensive coordinator Rex would be a great coach.

Rex would be a disaster with Philbin as the head coach. After the game who do you think the press is going to for a chat ? That would cause a ton of friction with Philbin, guaranteed.

So with your logic Sparano's last season with us was better than the year previous of that season, Daboll raised the stats with Henne/Moore. Why we fire Sparano he so great, we clearly improved! Not.

I know its a tough pill to swallow to finish 8-8 and just outside the playoffs. But everyone freaking out like this roster is terrible and we need to rebuild is just being ridiculous. We have a lot of young talent on the roster. Should their be coaching changes? Yes. I dont like Philbin keeping his job, however, if we can get a major change on the defensive side, we are in good shape.

Everyone has major holes entering the off season. This roster and team should not be rebuilt and is most certainly not In a state of disarray.

    Offense clearly improves.

Obviously your jokes haven't since the 80s.

I also believe Miami would have been better off staying with Sparano than hiring Philbin.

When I mentioned disarray I was referring to the lock room and the players negative press the last two years. If you don't call that disarray then what do you call it? On top of that, two years in a row many players on the team didn't show up season end. I am not happy being a fan of a team like that...it reminds me of the Oakland faders. Rebuilding from scratch is silly at this point but getting a focus mindset to go to battle with week in and to week out would be great. Rex I feel has the precise temperament for this type of game it inspire players to play harder. We need that first and foremost.

We are a better team I believe. Do to injuries in some areas and the development of T-hill plus the new younger players drafted of late, I feel positive. But I think its critical to keep the focus on the OL and DL in this years draft. These areas we need younger guys to keep at what failed us in the past and to help T-hill. The DL and LB and Swill need to be a combination draft and FA. And Coyle needs to be questioned and hard about what him problems have been the last two freakin years.
Take a look at IR we have some good players on there, that when active contributed.

I know you are a stat man and I appreciate that. Yet to me the the only numbers I care about are the number of wins and losses the team has each year.

The reality is that next year the Dolphins could have a top five offense, but if this defense continues to falter, their record will be no better than the past two years, IMO.

    Stats are a reflection.

If the defense continues to allow 30 points per game, yes I agree. In fact they could have even a worse record. Heck the Saints were #1 in offense and they missed the playoffs.

It will be interesting. I don't know if the defense is fixable. I do know Miami is going to need a lot of young guys to step up next year.

I think (like you do) that the offense has gotten better while the defense has regressed.

That's why I don't understand when people say we're the same as last year. Yes, we're still 8-8 but we did it in a different way therefore we're not "the same team." I just don't buy into that.

I would much rather move forward with the Ryan Tannehill of 2014 being led by Bill Lazor for example than root for the team we had last year. The entire goal of bringing in a Packers assistant coach and drafting a QB in the 1st round was about becoming a team that was led first and foremost by a passing-oriented offense. In many ways we purposefully neglected the defense because we chose to build up the offense. I do think the fans need to accept some responsibility on that one. We asked for this year after year and now we have to find a way to make it successful and the ironic part of it is that we have to now go back and patch up the defense.

To me, what we've done on the offense is clearly progress. On the whole, the defense has regressed to negate that, but we're certainly a different team and I think anyone who simply looks at the record and stubbornly say 'same old thing' is missing out on the changes that are happening.

Now you may not want to hear this, but if you ask me, I think we played a tougher schedule this year and still got to the same record. It may be tough to swallow for some fans, but I think the team actually did improve in that way. It's why I predicted 10-wins next year. Now that the defense has utterly collapsed in the last month of the season, I don't know if I will stand behind that sentiment.

You simply can't say one 8-8 season is the same as another unless the level of competition that year was exactly the same, which in our case, I don't think it was.

BPA could be punter, kicker, center and QB. You'll need to tighten it up just a little bit on what that BPA might be. If Hickey can put together a competent strategy like PIT, NE and GB do every year things can turn around quickly. The game is won in the trenches first so that needs to be our main focus starting in FA than hopefully and not eliminating BPA in one of our need positions in the draft. If the OL and DL evaluation is done right it will come with some much needed nastiness.

You make a very good point. Okay, just fired Philbin. Only if Ross had the *alls to stand up to the media and omit he made a hasty mistake and announce he's pursuing Rex at all cost. And Rex removes Coyle first words before acknowledging his acceptance while unnecessarily apologizing to Phins nation about the 37-24 beating he put on us with his makeshift sorry *ss scrub team.

Well, the O is better and we have better younger players that are looking good and we are in a much better position with our QB. so I feel that stand point we're better not just O stats. On the other hand head coach and D coach I'm not so optimistic about. Get new O and D linemen and get everyone healthy we should improve.

Just because the Saints are 1st on O doesn't mean their D has our potential to get better. Our O even thou better could be more of a reason for the D's failure. We are fast tempo and young players and injuries. Not sure about them.
