Twenty-six years as Dolphins coach. Fifteen AFC East titles. Sixteen playoff appearances. Five Super Bowls appearances (and another with Baltimore). Two titles. The numbers carry a birthday tear of nostalgia, don't they?

"My mind was always on the game, on what we were going to do on third-and-4, not on my birthday,'' he said.

That page is turned, those days gone. But the lessons aren't. Longevity always was Shula's partner, and he offers part of the secret by saying he stopped listening to talk radio on the way to work after it took half the morning for his anger to subside. The other part?

"Winning,'' he said. "You've got to win."

I was a teenager when they announced Don Shula was coming to the Dolphins from the Colts. That was some of the happiest news I ever had as a Dolphin fan. You just new in your heart that it was going to make the Dolphins a better team, we just didn't know it would be so soon. I have fond memories of the excitement my Dad and I shared of the news. My Dad and I shared the Bond of both loving the Dolphins and he got to live long enough to see their undefeated season and Super Bowl wins. I don't know if I will live long enough to share the same excitement with my Son.

Happy Birthday Coach Shula and thanks for the great memories.

Happy, Happy Coach... You have made many great memories for me as a Dolphan and ball boy (in 69-71). I hope you enjoy the day and have many more great days...

Don Shula is a treasure. It makes me sad to see him getting so old, but he still seems to be enjoying life to the fullest. As fans we all need to enjoy him and his wisdom while he's still with us.

Coach, you were the GREATEST and I for one still miss you terribly. You and your teams always gave me great pleasure in being a PROUD DOLFAN. The honor and integrity that you brought to the Miami Dolphins and to the NFL were second to none. You always were, and always will be a CHAMPION in my eyes and the eyes of many others. It was so rewarding to be a fan of the Dolphins while you were with us Coach! I am still a diehard Dolfan, but since you were forced to retire it has been a downhill ride all the way. Our team could start trending upward now with the right coaching and I do hope we find it soon! Please tell Ross to get rid of the practice bubble for starters and to make the renovations right, I wish we could have you back leading our team but I know that is not possible. I just wish Ross would put more faith into what Marino tells him and brings us a young up & comer (maybe Lazor) to successfully lead the Dolphins for the next 20 years. Again Coach, many thanks for all of the WONDERFUL memories and Great Dolphins Football and from Myself my Family, and all Dolfans wishing you a very Happy Birthday and blssed day. We Love You Coach !!!!
