Almost sounds to me Ross wants Hickey out. And Tannebaum might bring in his own guy.

I didn't say it meant nothing. I said we don't know what it means because there hasn't been any work done yet. It could succeed or it could fail. We have to wait and see. That's all I'm saying here.

Tannenbaum was also brought in as a consultant for implementing the analytics program for the Dolphins. As several have pointed out, that's never been Dennis Hickey's forte, and I think this is an extra insurance that this gets done (I think Garfinkel's fingerprints are on this move, and by all accounts, he's been pretty damn good at everything everywhere he's been - Gnassi Racing sponsorships, Padres CEO, improving Miami's attendance, etc.).

I don't understand the point of this at all. I mean, it makes a degree of sense if Tannenbaum was going to oversee all of football operations (coaching and personnel), effectively acting as a proxy for Ross that way. He's still not the guy I'd want to do that, but at least the job itself would make sense

Would it be too much to hope that Ross now knows he made a mistake by telling the world that Philbin is coming back next year and has now found a way to have him fired while keeping his "word" by turning everything over to Tannenbaum?

Hoping Tannenbaum was hired to do exactly that - fire Philbin and/or Coyles...

It was only a matter of time that Tanny was going to get a front office job after spending time as a consultant. He did hire Rex Ryan and he's the agent for Dan Quinn right now and last time I checked Quinn was a pretty hot coaching candidate. I guess he knows how to surround himself with the right people. Next offseason we get a new coach and GM

Guys, Tannenbaum runs the entire football operation. He has personnel control and is in charge of Hickey, meaning he is in fact the de facto Dolphins GM.

WT-? This seems like a total useless and pointless position. They hired Marino as a consultant. Hickey seemed to be doing a decent job in his first year. Now, he has to report and may be overruled by this j---off!!

Only way I'd like this is if his first thing he does is fire Philbin and hire Quinn or Ryan :shifty:

Do you see it now people? Do you see it now? ross has always had an affinity for the jest. Keeps aponte, hires mangini, hires matt higgins and now the gm that jest fans wanted gone - tannenbaum. This.... this is.... disgusting.

Is Ross going to hold a press conference announcing this? I'm interested only to see if the words committee or council will be used. I have a feeling he has instructed Tannebaum to create a committee.

I'm not up on Tannenbaum. I know that he was the personnel guy as the jests when to 2 afc championship games. I also know he left the jests in cap hell...on the other hand, that whole tim tebow mess has been reported as a Woody Johnson deal....

I don't know...I only hope he doesn't have a Jill Parcells type contract and actually has to work here to get paid... I wonder how Hickey feels today ?? bet there's a question he has...

Why is keeping Dawn a "jest?" From everything I've heard, she's smart and a great capologist. I agree that Ross is a boob, but I don't think her inclusion in the area of bad decision making are warranted. Unless I am missing something and someone wants to inform me?

I'm not so hateful towards Mike Tannenbaum. There are a number of goofs he made throughout his tenure with NYJ, but he also did bring in a bunch of talent. While he did leave NYJ n cap hell, it was for a purpose. He was trying to win a SB and came close. Closer than we've been in... forever. His role with the team isn't as GM, so it's moot anyway. If 2015 is Philbin and Hickey's last stand, I suspect Tannenbaum will be someone who Ross can lean on throughout the hiring process, as he did with Ireland back in 2012.

Philbo is basically dead man walking. Stephen Ross isn't going to saddle Tannenbaum with him.

Problem with that is Ross is never around and he appears to be very close to Tannenbaum, he'll side with him every time.

Predicting what Stephen Ross will do is a fools errand. Ross has failed as owner of this team in some capacity every year. Especially in regards to organizational structure. Convoluted only begins to describe it.

Would've been nice if this hire was an indirect way of not looking horrible for firing our HC, DC....but now that it doesn't sound like that's happening, I will have to take the wait and see approach.

What I can say is that I'm very frustrated that our entire coaching staff may be retained.

"Jest" as in a joke for the Jets. Aponte, Higgins and Tannenbaum are all former Jets, or "Jest" employees. Ross also tried to buy the Jets once upon a time.

Tannenbaum and Mangini drafted very well together in New York, I expect him to find his way down here soon.

Stringer's got this nail on head. Philbin is a dead man walking.

Tannenbaum's going to oversee Hickey, who, much like Ireland, is really just a scout; he doesn't serve a real purpose with contract negotiations, salary cap, analytics, etc. It's essentially Tannenbaum is the GM and Hickey is the Director of Personnel.

IIRC, someone (Stringer?) posted a video last year during the GM search that was sort of an open forum meeting of people associated with analytics at Harvard or some other big name institution like that. They had the 49ers guy, Eric Mangini, believe it or not Matt Roth (remember him?) was the player representation, and someone else. Mangini was pretty impressive during the panel. Food for thought.

Hi, I'm a Jets fan. I figured I'd give you the low down on Tannenbaum.

He's not going to pick players or scout them, even if he became your GM. He was the GM for the Jets but he leaned heavily on his scouts and head coaches for player evaluations. He drafted really well in the years Mangini (2006-2008) was with the Jets, but once Mangini left, his drafts went to crap (probably because Rex can't identify talent outside of defensive line which he used to play in college).

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nyj/draft.htm

I'm pretty sure Rex leaned on Tannenbaum to resign Sanchez...after all Rex had a huge man crush on Sanchez.

Tannenbaum is brilliant with the salary cap and trades. He was key in putting together the poison pill offer sheet that brought Curtis Martin to the Jets years ago. As a front office guy, he's a pretty good addition.
