Nate Jackson's "slow getting up" paints Mangini as a complete idiot without social skills. I'm inclined to believe it based on numerous stories consistent with Jackson's portray.

AbramsonPBP To clarify I'm told that the Mike Tannenbaum hire is an indictment on Dennis Hickey as GM. Obviously team isn't fully confident in Hickey. 1/6/15, 4:16 PM

Possible scenario: Ross has promised Philbin he would report to him directly, made him boss, however, Ross now see the needs for a VP. Rather than break a promise to Philbin (maybe scared Philbin will react badly, or leave or just wants to keep his promise, who knows) Ross sets up the structure anyway except that Philbin has an out. If all goes well under Philbin Ross can either feel justified in leaving things as they are, or if things fail under Philbin Ross has his structure in place with Tannenbaum beneath him and the new headcoach will then report to Tannenbaum. That seems to be what this is.
If true, then doesnt that mean ross still doesnt see philibin as the problem, and instead blames the teams failures this year on hickey doing a poor job acquiring talent? Not what i agree with at all, but thats what i take from it.
looks like they want hickey to concentrate what he's good at and maybe what he just wants to concentrate on while Baum focuses on the other stuff.. im not gonna overreact because i believe Hickey still has final say on talent, I didn't feel that hickey was running the show, its now a Finkle and Baum show while hickey takes care of personnel..
I just wish, that for once, this organization would put in a normal football structure and try it for 3 to 4 years. I am so tired of these strange and dysfunctional organizational hierarchy changes. All they do is create more chaos within the organization and do nothing to help Miami win football games. On the bright side, at least it's not Carl Peterson. Although I'm not sure how bright that side is.
The way the tweet was worded made it sound like a slight on hickeys ability as a gm, and that ross doesnt think he is capable. You could be right though, the tweet was problably speculation more than anything. I just would prefer hickey to have the final decision on draft picks over tannenbaum.
This isn't anything different than the setup with Quitcells, which BTW, was in place when Ross took over... This reeks of issues with Hickey in day to day football operations, which was his Achilles supposedly in Tampa.... Not sure where this is headed, unless Ross is "setting things up" for a clearing of the house next offseason...We'll see... But it's still an odd situation...Philbin, Aponte and Tannenbaum report to Ross....who's the odd man/woman out here ??
I think that's what we'll see after next season when Joe Philbin is not re-upped, or fired if he is prior to then. He might have something in his contract that states he reports directly to Ross. If you think about it, next year you'd have: VP of Football Ops: Mike Tannenbaum GM (essentially Director of Personnel): Dennis Hickey, if retained, or <Insert Name> Cap Specialist: Dawn Aponte Head Coach: <Insert Name>
10!!!!!#!!...OMG this Schmuck Ross continues to kill me....if he Felt that he needed someone at that position..why not Marino???? I swear I sometimes think that Ross is trying to drive away our fans..Karma is a Beech Ross!!
I know. It just seems like a really convoluted way to get there. It's just an unnecessary change that clouds the future even more. Sort of like keeping Philbin this year but brining in Hickey. Next year we'll most likely keep Tannenbaum and bring in a new GM and Coach.
It sounds like Philbin and Hickey are getting a year long on hands evaluation. I think Ross knows that he's not being objective about Philbin and wants someone else to really evaluate him and the team's coaching staff. Maybe Ross is actually trying to learn how to run a team, granted there were probably better choices than Tannebaum. I also don't get how you can be a NFL VP of Football Operations and still be an agent, seems like a clear cut conflict to me personally.
$ talks. It seems more likely...at least on the surface...that Ross isn't going to extend Philbin (*knocks on wood*) and make him coach for his job next year. Essentially, Joe Philbin is on the cheap side right now. If he fails to make the playoffs next year, pretty good chance of that happening I'd say, then he's done. Ross gets to make that splash hire, for instance, a Rex Ryan if he takes a year off to do TV, and perhaps a new GM to work under Tannenbaum just in time for ALL of the stadium renovations to be done. From a marketing standpoint, that seems like a perfect opportunity to change the *WHOLE* culture of the franchise - football, marketing, stadium, fanbase - standpoint. I think Stephen Ross really did believe Joe Philbin was "the guy". Then, the Jets finale happened, and he's got buyer's remorse. But, how hard would it have been to add in a new coach during this stretch IF he was planning on hiring Mike Tannenbaum to be VP of Football Ops. and still keep Hickey? Probably not going to land your top target (Harbaugh). Next year's an easy sweep as both Philbin and Hickey's contracts expire. It sucks, and I'm guessing we, as fans, will suffer through another 6-10 to 8-8 season, but I think it will work out better long-term. The problem, as it is, is that Stephen Ross didn't realize this after 2013; he had the reasoning (collapse, bullygate). But, Miami was "close enough" for him to still believe Philbin could get the team over the hump with better staff and players around him. Unfortunately it didn't work and Miami, predictably in my opinion, had the season they had in 2014. Now, he knows that Joe Philbin probably isn't the guy, and they *know* that Hickey isn't cut out to run a whole front office, he's a glorified scout much like Jeff Ireland who had some hits but was by all means very average, and there's an easy out after 2015.
The only fans who see this as a good hire are the same fans who think Ross is a great owner and Philbin deserved to be given another year to keep this team mediocre. If you want to see where this team is headed under this ownership and Tannebaum. Just look at the 2014 Jets. That is where this team is headed under this lack of leadership.
this is just one ****ing endless nightmare after another. im starting to think the ancient indian burial ground curse is true.
Leaning on Ireland during the hiring process certainly worked out well didn't it? Hopefully the next thing we will hear in regards to Ross is that he has put the team up for sale because he finally realized he has no idea what he is doing as an NFL owner.
Tannenbaum on finsiders now. Good team, good young quarterback. Impressed with both Philbin and Hickey. Reiterates Hickey has final roster say. Bright future for Tannehill. More : Says great relationship with Philbin and Hickey. (Reading between the lines it sounds that Hickey will be in charge of scouting, draft etc but will have all other power removed)
Just another case of Ross achieving something positive (footing the bill for his own stadium renovations) and then quickly reminding us of how completely ****ed we are, with this owership.
He's really stressing the analytics, science and technology side of things. Talking about things they've learned in Europe (eg English premier league) that they're going to apply
No owner has ever deserved an empty stadium more than Stephen Ross. I hope those new renovations come with plenty of tarps to cover up all those empty seats.
Is Hickey being handicapped? If anything, the Dolphins seemed to have a more talented team this season than in 2013, and the end result was the same, which points to other problems. Hickey is a big unknown but I wouldn't say the 2014 draft or offseason was a failure (yet, still early). Addition of Delmas helped the backfield before his injury, the OL was improved a bit (again, before the Albert injury), Jarvis Landry became the best WR on the team. How does Philbin keep dodging blame?
Not only that but it makes it hard to make a clean sweep. We always seem to have leftovers.Rotten apples will ruin the barrel .
I guess next year Ross will fire Philbin and bring Rick Kotite out of retirement as HC. What a brilliant laughing stock. What did we do to deserve this?
Interview with Tannenbaum on Finsiders was pretty short and mostly a fluff piece. The two main things I took away from it though (just IMO) : 1. The organization is going to be be heavily invested in sports science, technology and analytics. Tannenbaum believes that these will provide advantages across the organisation (for management and players). Obviously didn't speak much about specifics during that chat. 2. Dennis Hickey is seen as a scouting/player personnel guy only, not someone that can run the entire football org.
Lame duck status. It will be easy to sweep away Philbin and Hickey after next season as both of their contracts expire. Hopefully Stephen Ross learned that from last time around.
I think Hickey will be thrown overboard after the draft. It's clear they only view him as a do-boy player/personnel director.
