I mean Stringer has been on this from the get go. He brought up the best point. So let's fast forward to next year and we are trying to hire Gus Malzahn. Steve Ross says: "Hey Gus, meet our GM Dennis Hickey. He's been working on some cutting edge analytics. Dennis, can you show Gus what you've been working on?" (Dennis Hickey fishes around for his iPad, realizes the battery is dead, smiles awkwardly) Tannenbaum is just a guy that is much more impressive and knowledgeable about this stuff. He has represented coaches and has connections that way. He's a better face for the franchise.
Guy, most of those guys listed played on teams that were a few plays away from being on Super Bowl teams.
If this means that tannenbaum heads up the 2016 search for a new coach and philbin is gone after this season, this would be a good move.
Ross is also the Director of Football Operations. Something I've hoped he would relinquish since Parcells left.
My biggest and probably only gripe with this is that Tannenbaum is Ross' friend. He can't bear to part with people who he likes even if they underperform. His affinity for Ireland kept him when Sparano got jettisoned and his affinity for Philbin is what's keeping him employed in Miami. If Tannenbaum fails to produce good results, I fear he'll allow Tannenbaum to continuously pass the buck onto the lower rungs of talent acquisition and Ross won't want to fire his friend. This is a guy who requested Ireland to basically betray his at the time friend Sparano and who forced Philbin to fire his friend Mike Sherman, mind you.
I'd like to believe that people learn from experience. Hopefully he sees that what he did in NY is what got him fired.
Still ... LOL@ the jets with Idzik in comparison. Hired Jan 2013. Fired Dec 2014. Only 2 players in 19 total draft picks under Idzik (Richardson and Amaro) have been good picks. Out of 12 picks from the 2014 draft, only 4 are still on the roster. WTF? Tannenbaum may have had some misses and made some mistakes, but he was better than that.
of course..hes repped head coaches in major sports leagues..he's well qualified..smart dude, just let someone else head the draft and we good baby.
I am going to think positive that this Hire for us is going to give us many great returns followed by several great hires on our coaching staff as well as a great GM. On top of these developments we have a Super Draft & Free Agency with nothing but great players selected for us in all areas of need.
2 more are on IR, so may have likely been on the roster had they been healthy. Wonder where the other 8 ended up? I am too lazy to look into it right now.
Well, I actually dont mind the HC reporting directly to the owner from an on the field performance and approach standpoint, and I dont mind the GM reporting to Head of or VP of Football operations either, as the Head of or VP of Football Operations would report directly to the owner. Two separate worlds, with some overlap, but Owner could bring both folks into a room if there is ever an issue with what players are wanted, or what style of play would dictate what players, etc. The BIGGEST problem with this approach from Miami Dolphins standpoint is just one thing which puts the chances of failure at the highest level, and that is our Owner, Steve Ross the AlbatROSS!
Very intrigued to hear he sought out scientific approaches to the game. Though I'd like to point out, every team uses science or analytics or whatever you want to call it. Even the most basic scout is probably ranking players in some way and even the most "anti-stats" coach is using some kind of stats. That's being at least partially scientific about things (science is method, not space lasers). But the ones who are going to get the most out of it are people supposedly like Tannenbaum who seek it out and embrace the advantage it can give. Also: Tannenbaum. Tannehill. Coincidence? I think not. How does this not work out well?
Yeah, well that also means another year of mediocre football, questions about game management, Thill's progression, Coyle is STILL the friggin DC, etc....So get ready for repeat of this season...hope you're ready....
So now Hickey is reporting to Ross and not Tannenbaum as previously announced. Seemingly as a get-out-of-jail for violating the Rooney Rule with the hire. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ey-rule-violation-in-tannenbaum-hire-somehow/
I was starting to come round to this move after listening to Tannenbaum talk yesterday. I still think it could be a good hire in the long term, but how do we always manage to screw up even the most basic of tasks?
I think people are missing the important part of this. Its not that its tannebaum. Its not that Philbin doesn't answer to him (likely because of contract which is up next year). Its not because Hickey won't answer to him (because of the Rooney Rule and his contract is also up next year). Its that the position was created and filled and the analytics/science department will be implemented. After this coming year, its very likely the GM & HC will answer to VPoFO. That means Ross won't be making those kinds of decisions anymore. Surely, people can see that Tannebaum is better at football than Ross, right? If Tannebaum doesn't work out, at least the position and infrastructure are now in place.
I'll say this - my honest initial reaction was negative. We added the guy who drafted (and extended) Mark Sanchez. A former Jets executive. Then I calmed down, listened to Tannenbaum and warmed up to the idea and what it sounds like he wants to bring to the party. I was getting legit excited about the news. The point you raise about Ross being further removed from football decisions too is definitely a win. Having said that, what bugs me is: 1. This seems to solidify the lame duck feeling that the current GM and coach have. By that, I mean that it feels inevitable that Tannenbaum will bring in a new HC and GM at some point, so why not do it now? I'm tired of wasted seasons. 2. The Rooney-rule shenanigans is just another public, bumbling mishap from an organisation that seems to go out of it's way to embarrass itself. They Britta'd this for sure
Oh Good so the organizational hierarchy is now perfectly clear as mud.... just the way Ross likes it. I'm sure he will be able to sleep easier now.
Am I "not a true fan" if I kind of don't even care anymore, and am now actually losing interest in the Dolphins? I mean, is this really the same team anyway? This is a company owned by Stephen Ross, and I don't like Stephen Ross, Joe philbin, or mike Tannenbaum. Why like the dolphins? This And the jets game being at 930 a.m. next year is like bleh, maybe I don't Care at all next year. Franchise is a joke now. Until Ross sells or dies, we are just a joke. F "we". Its " they" for me now.
Outside of a 'growing' RT17 and a young J. Landry there really isn't anything to be too excited about. Maybe Jelani Jenkins too.
Rex isnt going to take a DC job for any team (especially for us when he's a way better HC then Philbin). It's either a HC or broadcaster for Rex.
