If Bum was alive today and talking about Philbin, he'd say "He can take his'n and get beat by your'n, and he can take your'n and get beat by his'n."

Playoffs? Joe Philbin? Keep dreaming, he eliminates himself weeks before the season is over. He teases a product and then folds at the last quarter.

I don't think the extension will be anything more then a 2 year extension, just like Sparano got. That's how Ross sets up his future firings, gives them a raise before they're let go. Weird strategy, but what ever, it's his money to burn. I still don't think any sane owner keeps Philbin after next season which is guaranteed to be 8-8 or worse.

That isn't really an explanation as much as it is a series of platitudes.

I hope Miller's chinstrap wasn't fastened too tight on that play. That looks like it could have hurt.

I'm a big Kevin Bacon fan, btw.

I'd be very interested to hear any sort of objective analysis of how the team could've done better with another coach, with its current level of talent being the central variable considered, rather than the fantasy of other coaches' prowess and how it could've generated what a group of fans would've rather experienced this year. I haven't seen that yet, however. In other words, if I'm going to be more "honest" with myself, it's going to be based on something objective, and not a fantasy.

    Couple of things......

    - We don't even know if this true yet. Its Armando after all, and his accuracy track record is far from stellar.
    - Its not out of the realm of possibility, that Philbin's current contract keeps from answering to anyone but Ross. If there is an extension there could be a provision that erases that.

Again, we don't know, so calm the hell down.

Frankly I'd rather have Sporano back. He might've been a fistpumping conservative meatball but at least he gets players to play hard for him and didn't cost us games with moronic decisions.

I am not sure of this is all that of a big deal, I have seen many other teams do this in the final year of contracts and still fire the coach in question. I think it is just to protect from the Lame Duck syndrome (though I think he is on the short list anyway). My only concern is that the extension keeps him reporting directly to Ross (like his contract) or will report to Tannenbaum when the extension kicks in and is at his mercy.

You must have a short term memory because Sparano cost us plenty of games with his moronic decisions. That's not an endorsement for Philbin but Sparano was worse on GameDay than Philbin. You must've missed the Saints game when Sparano was here. He single handily, along with the officials help, kept the Saints undefeated another week.

That game was more to do with the refs blowing calls than Sparano. The downside to Sparano was that he was top conservative but I'm not sure if that was due to having Henne as a QB, cuz in Dallas when he was calling plays their offense was more explosive and when we had Pennington our offense was more efficient. We just kicked too many FGs instead of TDs but more likely thanks to Checkdown Chad Henne.

Philbin's team reminds me of the Texans once they turned the corner, made the playoffs like two yrs in a row..then lost so many FA's they just collapsed.

"Continuity" is a quaint notion that was a good idea prior to free agency hitting the league's rosters.

Now every wasted season starts the FA to be clock ticking..if anyone cares to look Sean Smith and Vontae Davis had great seasons..on other teams. That is the new reality, not sure how much time can be spent on a HC and "continuity"

Davis and especially Smith are press/man CBs, Coyle runs off/zone primarily. They're gone for the same reasons that Dansby, Burnett, Soliai, Carroll, Fasano, Bush, Marshall, are gone.

Thats the price to be paid when you hire a new coach who wants "his guys".

Agreed. Rosters flip so easily, it's not hard to rise and fall in today's game. Looking at the list of talent this team had that has left is depressing. Imagine this team with Vontae, Dansby, and Carroll. CB, LB, and S are the teams biggest needs defensively going into FA and all of those guys (Carroll to a lesser extent, but he's still good and better than anyone not named Grimes) would of been massive additions to a defense that until the final stretch, was top 3.

Texans lost Williams and Barwin and who knows who else and just flopped. They had hoped Schaub turned the corner and could be the guy..oops.

I see Dio and Jenkins and I just see wasted seasons, ditto Wake.

Won't go all fail forward fast, however it is not a terrible idea.

Relax people, our owner is a genius billionaire. He's simply pulling off a shrewd acting job in attempt to present stability and accord while the organization lures a top notch DC whom they want believing won't be working for a lame duck. right? right? :whistling:

No; what I'm saying is that this team's level of talent is associated with about an average record, which is what it had, and which makes it impossible to determine with any certainty the job Joe Philbin is doing in making it any better or worse than it would've been with any other coach.

We can sure speculate and have personal opinions, but no one, including myself, can say with any certainty that the team would be doing any better with any other coach. And in fact, the objective evidence suggests it wouldn't.

And who is responsible for developing that talent, motivating those players, and keeping them focused and playing at a high level? Who allowed the issue with Wallace in the final jets game to escalate to the point of crippling the offense, instead of diffusing the situation and getting his star receiver back on the field?

We've watched Philbin dump players who were talented but difficult or had strong personalities because he didn't want to have to manage them, only to have those players excel elsewhere with coaches who could manage them. We've him not play players because he was being stubborn and refusing to play other guys. We'd have no idea what we had in Jelani Jenkins if not for injury. We've watched him waste seasons by not being able to better coach games. We've witnessed horrific losses to division rivals while he sat on time outs and ran out the clock or allowed his young QB to take a repeated beating where he was sacked 6 or more times on at least 3 occasions.

I strongly disagree and think that Belichick or the Harbaugh boys would've gotten better results by retaining the talent and better developing the players.

    YMMV.

Why can't the problem be two-fold? Ireland failed at team building and shoring up units and Philbin and Co. have failed to coach up certain players.
