Color me surprised... Mike Pouncey has been added to the Pro Bowl roster as a replacement for San Francisco guard Mike Iupati. Pouncey missed the first quarter of the season due to hip surgery in the offseason, forcing the Dolphins to add Samson Satele to man the center position. http://www.thephinsider.com/2015/1/10/7526075/mike-pouncey-going-to-the-pro-bowl
Eh.. Have fun playing flag football in hawaii inguess. Pro bowl is not some sort of accomplishment anymore. This guy was beyond average this past season.
Pro Bowl is in Tempe Arizona this year I believe....guessing more players will develop aches and pains.
It isn't just the Pro Bowl, the NFL itself , under the rule of der fuehrer is becoming just another Hollywood production.
Dude had major surgery, came back early, played out of position to help the team, made the Pro Bowl. Those actions speak louder than the words of his haters.
I mean... Cool, but....not sure it means much. If he had no prior name recognition he's not even being considered. Hopefully his return to C gets him back to performing well.
And you clearly haven't watched or understood the game. Even when healthy, he gets pushed around way too often.
Just because someone says he sucked as a guard, doesn't mean they're a hater. It means they watched the games. No one argued when he made it as a center. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk
I don't think you can entirely compartmentalize it, either. Him not being able to play Guard is a negative against him as a player.
This selection clearly shows that players are most often selected more on perception than on reality. Pouncey was a below average player this past season while playing guard. He may still prove to be a pro bowl type player once he has a full off season to get healthy and he returns to center next year, but his selection to the pro bowl based on his play this past season is nothing but a joke.
Wow he didn't come close to deserving that. I earned a pro bowl nod just as much as he did this year...
He was drafted to play center. Not every player can play multiple positions. Him not playing center is a negative on the coaching staff. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk
I agree with your statement but he somehow was selected to play in the pro bowl based on his play at right guard this season. Obviously the individuals responsible for this selection didn't watch him play this season. They must have looked at film from his previous seasons which he was playing center and decided to disregard his below average play at the guard position in 2014.
Making the Pro Bowl doesn't mean much to a lot of people but a he was already a Pro Bowler before this year, he worked his *** off to come back, played RG at barely 300 lbs, I'm sure that earned him some additional stripes with his teammates and coaches.
In general, I think Pouncey gets a pass on his "bad" year. This was a new offense. He was playing a new position without having practiced or prepared at all. He was--as we all know--coming off an injury which required surgery and was rushed back. I don't really think the new offense or the switch to Guard was that big a deal. The blocking scheme was very similar and the switch from Center to Guard is easily a challenge that a player of his caliber should be expected to take on with appreciable success. Still, when you're not healthy and prepared to go out there it quickly shows (at least at the NFL level) and this year Pouncey had to come in without having had as much time to prepare himself as he should have. Now why people would complain about him making the Pro Bowl, I don't know. It's a popularity contest yes, but he plays for the team you root for, right?
Exactly. Sounds like a bunch of Jets fans in here, mad bc a Dolphin got the nod over one of their guys.
Dolphins fans are the same as every other group in the sense that they over-rate their young, developmental and rotational players. We were quick to anoint Davone Bess. We're quick to anoint Jarvis Landry. We're quick to argue that Pouncey is the "best young Center in the NFL." However, Dolphins fans are really bad when it comes to turning on 3-5 year vets. As soon as someone has a down year, chuck 'em. Misi tries to transition into a MLB. Nope. Chuck 'em. Odrick wasn't great this year. Let him walk! Pouncey was lackluster. Replace him! It's like the offseason tradition with Dolphins forums. There's just a time when people come out of the woodwork to express how far from grace all the guys have fallen. I'm not picking on anyone. I'm probably guilty of it. I'm not Odrick's biggest supporter. But damn...it's funny when you stand back and watch it!
The fact he plays for the Dolphins shouldn't factor into the reality he didn't play well enough to earn his spot on the pro bowl team. As a Dolphin fan, I would rather see him get ready for next season and make sure he is 100% healthy heading into next season. Personally I don't care who makes the pro bowl because that is one game I can live without. I haven't watched one play of that particular game in years. I'm sure he probably receives a bonus from the Dolphins for making the pro bowl. Players usually have it in their contract that they receive additional monetary pay if they reach certain incentives in the contract. Making the pro bowl team is usually one of those incentives to receive additional money from their team. So good for Pouncey in reaching this incentive, but it still doesn't change the fact that he didn't deserve it this year, based on his play on the field. Hopefully he he can come back next year as this teams starting center and actually earn a spot in the pro bowl because of his play on the field. Not because it was a popularity contest which got him selected to the team.
Totally off topic, Andrew Luck is phenomenal. Totally out playing Peyton right now, the refs are single handedly keeping it close.
The guy is simply ridiculous. He puts every other young QB to shame. The INTs are the only knock on him and they're not that bad.
It still irks me that the Colts were the orgaization smart enough to, "suck for Luck". I can still remember when the Dolphins had the worst record early in the season and projections were that they would take Luck with the first pick in the draft. Instead the Dolphins went on to win a few meaningless games, while the Colts made sure they continued to lose enough games to get Luck with the first pick in the draft. The Dolphins prize for winning a few meaningless games in 2012 was to be able to draft Tannehill. While it wasn't a terrible consolation prize in the draft, getting Tannehill. It certainly wasn't the grand prize winner the Colts received by having the worst record in the league in 2012 and being rewarded with the opportunity to take Luck in that years draft. The Colts may not win the SB this year, but they are going to be the team to beat in the AFC to get to the SB in coming years with Luck as their starting QB. With Tannehill as our starting QB, we can just hope we can have a winning season sometime in the next few years.
