    Wannstedt's quote:

This is the next step for Tannehill in my opinion. When the game becomes a shootout between teams from the quarterback position, he has to step up and realize that he has to win the game himself and make the necessary plays. That's just the way the NFL operates.

Well he is 1-0 vs Wilson so far. Too bad he isn't undefeated against Brady.

Cosell is probably the most reliable of the evaluators. While he wasn't as effusive some of the others, he knows what he's talking about more often than not.

I can think of one difference between Tannehill and Fiedler. Tannehill can throw the out pass without a pick six.

Tanne can also throw a quick out pattern. Something Fielder couldn't do without a pick six.

He is also way more durable.

To me ... the biggest thing I took away from it was what Seragusa said,

He needed confidence, and I think he got some confidence later on in the year this year. I think he just needs to go out there and believe. Once a quarterback starts believing that you’re going to win, it doesn’t matter (what else is going on).”

Confidence in football cannot be over stated. Especially in the NFL. Its a game of inches, and seconds, and if your pausing because you arent sure, your done. Once 17 gets confidence that hes the one, hes going to take that next step. Everything will fall into place.

It's in the link in the OP:

Greg Cosell, Senior Producer at NFL Films

(On what he saw in Tannehill’s 3rd season) - “I though that Tannehill made a lot of progress. I think he’s right on track to being a pretty good NFL quarterback.”

:knucks: Agreed. I mean, with having the Defense that Wanny had and having Ricky in his prime at RB, we should be using the "if QB's like Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer and Jay Fiedler can win SB's so can 'Player X'".

Fiedler had one great yr for us, THill blows Fiedler away and it is not even close.

Real question with THill is what is the ceiling we are looking at with him? Does he have to be surrounded by great players to win, or does he make players around him better?

Of course he has also been badly outplayed by Geno Smith in two of the four meetings they have met on the field.

If you are going to give him credit for the win over the Seahawks and Wilson, you also have to remember that he lost two games to the Bills in 2013 when they had their backup QB as the starter in both games.

I will admit that Tannehill has shown improvement in each of his three seasons but the fact remains that the Dolphins are only 23-25 over those three years. Any mediocre QB in the NFL, including Matt Moore could have led the Dolphins to a similar record in the past three years.

Once teams figured out, after that first year, that if they kept Fiedler in the pocket that it was unlikely he could beat them. He had a few exceptions, like that Cowboys game, but not many. I thought he threw a pretty seam pass and his deep ball wasn't bad, but he just couldn't throw those out routes and outside of the seam routes, he seemed to struggle hitting WRs in stride.

Based on how bad the Bills defense was during his time as their defensive coordinator, I think he forgot how to coach defense after all his years as a very average head coach.

Disagree. We would be 6 wins or less the last three years with a quarterback lesser than Tannehill.

True, because Tannehill has functioned at about the average level overall during that period, and that's what the Dolphins' record has been, as well.

If there were a "quarterback lesser than Tannehill," then of course the won-loss record would also be lesser, and six wins or fewer (rather than about eight) would be consistent with that.

There is really no disagreement at all between the above two posts.

    :dunno:

Do think MMoore is better at some aspect of the game than THill, also think we know who MMoore is, he can lead a team to a playoff spot, the time letting him do so is better spent on developing a better prospect.

INOW, not seeing a Alex Smith type of turn around for MMoore

Then by extension you would have to believe that there is some other part of the team that is worse than mediocre. Otherwise the team wouldn't have a mediocre record.

Obviously there is no way to resolve this issue since Tannehill was the QB for all three years. You have your opinion and I have mine. I just think the Dolphins would have had the same record with Moore as they have had with Tannehill, but we will never know.

I think T-Hill is better than Matt Moore overall. There are some areas where he is better. I think he would have done better than Tannehill on the first 4 games of the season as he is a veteran who has learned more offenses. However I think he would do worse in the next 12 games of the season after Tannehill finally caught up to the offense.

Matt Moore is Kyle Orton is Ryan Fitzpatrick is any other mediocre quarterback. Tannehill is a step beyond that. Maybe 2 steps.

I do not. There is no way to prove it though. We do know that Moore never had a full season as good as Tannehill and that Moore was never the focal point of any offense.

Kyle Orton was the QB of the Bills for the majority of the past season and the Bills finished with a better record than the Dolphins.
Therefore it would appear that Orton might have been a step beyond Tannehill in the 2014 season.

I realize football is a team game and it doesn't all come down to the play of the QB. Yet if the Dolphins actually had a QB who was a step or two better than Orton this past season, they would have been a playoff team, IMO.

Right now I see Tannehill as an improving young QB in the NFL, but I see him as no better than average at this stage of his career. Yet I do see a possibility he could continue to improve and could possibly become a top 12-15 type QB.

I just don't see him ever being an elite type QB. I think for the Dolphins to ever become a legitimate SB contender, they will have to upgrade from Tannehill. He will be good enough to possibly get them into the first round of the playoffs eventually, but that will probably be about as far as he can take them.

Sadly Jay Fielder was not a 6'4 athlete with cannon arm. He was ivy league smart, but lacked the ability to read defenses or avoid mistakes. Gutsyness and lack of pocket awareness is where their similarities end.
