We can't compare any contract situation with the Brady/Patriots contract, Brady and the Patriots pretty much have a verbal/handshake agreement in trust, Brady trusts that the incentives will be paid, he trusts they won't release him, the Patriots trust in his health. He's only had one injury ever, so banking on his health and conditioning, a guy that stays in the pocket and knows how to land on the ground properly, is why they're able to do this.

Not even Peyton trusts his own health nor front office, look what happened after he got injured once, they cut his *** for Luck.

So that's a Patriot thing that they got in favor of everyone else in the NFL. I would actually say Luck may be the next quarterback to have that type of contract situation, but then again Irsay did cut ties with Peyton, so probably not.

Tannehill is getting the Dalton/Kaepernick contract. I am not a believer of his skills, but I know he's getting that.

I would not surprised in THill takes a smaller but shorter deal. He's ascending but are the Dolphins?

Plays 2-3 more years then sign the Cowboys or Texans?

At this point he isn't even a free agent, and so the risk of losing him right now is nil. Right now the leverage for the team is that he's still under contract, and the team is under no obligation to pay him a penny more, and the leverage for Tannehill is in the specter of his becoming better and becoming a free agent, at which point the team will have to pay him more than it does now to keep him. There is also the risk for Tannehill that he is severely injured before earning his next contract, in such a way that no team wants to pay him what the Dolphins might want to right now. So that's the scenario in its entirety.

I'd say what is most likely to happen is that Tannehill gets an average-level contract, which is consistent with how he's playing right now, and considers it a victory given that it eliminates the risk that he becomes injured before he ever gets his first relatively large contract in the league.

If he is truly ascending, then in all likelihood, so are the Dolphins. Did you happen to see the statistics in the original post?

Bump in light of the news today that the team is discussing a 7-year, $105M contract for Tannehill. That would put him at about the average range in terms of 2014 salary cap hits for NFL QBs.

If Tannehill's play continues to improve significantly, the Dolphins could have themselves quite a deal under the terms of that contract, and have more money left over than lots of teams to improve the talent elsewhere on the roster.

7 years is stupid unless most of it is not guaranteed.

This one is going to hurt when it goes south......
