I disagree. His make or break year was this year, and he made it.

Its this year, if we dont make the playoffs, its more than likely that Philbin will get fired and its not a guarantee that the new HC will keep RT17 unless he goes off for 4500 yards and 35+ TDs

Who jettisons a 90 rated passer? The most drastic thing a new HC would do is bring in competition if he essentially repeats 2014.

He would likely then start somewhere else. Take a look through the league at how many teams are getting worse play from their quarterbacks, which leaves them essentially with zero chance of competing at a high level. There are about 10 of the 32 you could say that about, arguably. Tannehill would immediately give at least those 10 teams a better chance at being competitive.

What I mean is that he's become a bona fide starter that allows his team to stop considering the idea that he may need to be replaced, and instead focus on improving the team elsewhere. If he had performed like he did in 2013, the team would be looking for a replacement.

Its still not a guarantee that the new HC would keep RT17, what if the new HC dont feel like RT17 doesnt fit in his system? Its a hypothetical, but im just saying.

Yup. We get our first good QB since Marino and some want to jettison him cause he's not great (yet). That is insane.

Then you do what Harbaugh did with Alex Smith. Rework your offense and bring in someone you think can run it to perfection. You just don't get rid of capable QB's. If Alex Smith doesn't get cut when he was considered one of the biggest busts ever, why would Tannehill? If our HC gets rid of Tannehill for system reasons as a 90+ passer, we've already made the wrong decision.

Chip Kelly about to get rid of the guy who led the WHOLE NFL in passer rating in 2013 because he thinks he can get someone better to run his offense. It is the way the cookie crumbles, we dont know how Miami's cookie will crumble, im spitting out hypotheticals, playing devils advocate.

I would say the put up or shut up time has already happened. We'll find out if Tannehill has technically "put up" according to the staff if they extend him or pick up his option by May 3.

I'm guessing they'll pick up his option and try to extend him before the season starts.

I think what can be difficult to understand is just how little probability there is of being successful as a team with a below average quarterback. 71% of the variation in win percentage in the NFL was predicted by QB DVOA in 2014, while controlling for team defensive DVOA. In other words, putting defense aside, what a mere single player is doing on a team is associated with 71% of what happens in terms of winning. That's incredible.

Next year is most definitely a make or break season for Tannehill.

For or him to remain the long term starter, he is going to have to lead the team to the playoffs next year. By doing this, it will save Philbin's job, as well as Hickey's job. Both these men have shown their faith in Tannehill so far and by leading the team to the playoffs Tannehill will also show that he has taken his game to a higher level.

If on the otherhand the Dolphins once again fail to make the playoffs and Philbin and Hickey are fired, the next HC and GM may not want to tie up a lot of cap money on a QB who failed to lead his team to the playoffs after four years as the teams starting QB.

Next year should be a make or break year for Philbin, Hickey, Tannehill, and many of the other veterans on the roster. There are no more excuses after four years. It is playoffs or bust next season and if it turns out bust, it will be time to start the rebuilding process over with a new regime and a new starting QB.

That isn't all on him. Notice Matt Ryan and Drew Brees uncharacteristically failed to lead their teams to the playoffs in 2014. Why? Their defenses were horrible. No one will be looking to replace them, however.

Eh. Only one time has Matt Ryan made the playoffs without a Top 10 defense. They were 10-6 that year. Oh, the Bucs and Panthers being 4-12 and 6-10 that year may have also helped.

So Matt Ryan is a perfect comparison to Tannehill in this regard.

It is ridiculous to compare Ryan and Bree's to Tannehill. Both of them have led their respective teams to the playoffs a number of times. The fact they both have shown the ability to lead their team into playoffs is the reason no one is looking to replace them.

Tannehill has never even led the Dolphins to a winning season, much less into the playoffs.
I am certainly willing to see how next season turns out before calling for Tannehill to be replaced.

As I stated, if he leads them to the playoffs, that will keep everything status quo with the coaching staff and GM. It will also prove that Tannehill has the ability to lead this team to enough wins to get them into the playoffs.

There just hasn't been very many QB's who have been the starting QB for a team for four years who failed to lead his team to the playoffs and kept his job when a new coaching staff took over.

I have always seen next year as a make or break year for Tannehill. He needs to prove he can be a leader the other players believe in.

I am not as convinced as some on here that he is the long term answer for the Dolphins, but I certainly hope he proves he is.

I also am not as impressed by his passing stats as some others are. His TD to interception ratio was good, but his yards gained per attempt was near the bottom when compared to other QB's in the NFL. Basically he has shown that he is a very good passer if he is dumping the ball off or throwing short passes, but he remains inaccurate on passes down the field.

Hopefully he will continue to improve, but a sub 500 QB after three years should never feel like he has nothing to worry about in regards to his position on the team. Right now he is better than anyone else they have on the roster at the position and better that the free agent QB's. I won't argue that.

So it is his job next year and it is his year to prove he deserves to be the long term answer for the Dolphins at the QB position. To me, he has yet to prove that he is.

Right, the only point is that if the team doesn't make the playoffs, that won't necessarily be attributed completely to Tannehill. If by chance the team has a horrendous defense next year and misses the playoffs because of it, that certainly won't close the case on Tannehill's ability to be a playoff-caliber QB. It's not like next year is the single defining year on his ability in that regard, because there are other factors that could interfere with that.

Tannehill is going nowhere. He's here for the long haul.

The question is, will he take that next step or will he always be almost good enough? A Jay Cutler, an Andy Dalton, even what people (wrongfully) felt about Tony Romo. At the end of the day you gotta stop making excuses for him and he needs to deliver. You're not always going to have a strong running game and a strong defense. Drew Brees led some pretty awful defenses to the playoffs quite a few times, including their Superbowl year where they were 25th in total defense and 20th in pts allowed.

Tannehill has already proven himself to me. He's gotten progressively better each and every season and he's getting more and more comfortable as a leader.

He's here for good, as he should be.

Fix the defense and we're a playoff team.

I believe they will take the 5th year option on Tannehill. It's also possible the next coach likes Tannehill and we find out that it was poor coaching losing games and not the offense or defense.

Tannehill has failed year after year after year. We should be done with this guy.

Wow he has a high completion % on short passes.

Losses any big game he is in (badly)
    no pocket presence
    Can't evade a rush
    Can't extend plays
    Constantly checks down
    Can't hit the deep ball

All of your statements are subjective and vague. The team lost big games last year, but Tannehill frequently gave the team the lead in the fourth quarter. He evaded the rush better this year, so "can't" is grossly inaccurate. He extended plays this year. He went through his progressions and frequently made the correct choice.

There is little doubt that Tannehill must continue to improve. I do not doubt he will since he has improved every season.

Here is another interesting take on Tannehill.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...nehill-worth-every-bit-of-15-million-annually

I agree with his conclusion. I'm not a big fan of grading QBs based on the team's wins and losses. Yes, they have a larger impact on the offense than other positions but there is just so much they can do. I think people forget how many times the team went 8-8 with Danny at the helm. Or how Elway never got a ring until Denver got a running game or Peyton a ring until he had a defense. But I do think that good to very good QBs suddenly get a lot more hype when their teams are winning even when their on field performance doesn't change. So even if Ryan plateaus at his 2014 production, if the team gets better he will suddenly be thought of as an upper echelon player.

THere's nothing to lose by taking the 5th year option on Tannehill. If he would have connected on more of the long balls, we'd probably have made the playoffs. They're probably weighing the $20M transition tag to the cost of a long term deal with at least $50M guaranteed. Salary cap wise, taking the hit this year would be the safest bet as opposed to $50M strapping the team long term if a new regeim decides T'hill isn't the guy. Either way, I have no doubt they'll make the wrong choice as usual. I wouldn't mind as much if they tank this year rather than if they tanked and hindered the teams future cap space.

to say ryan extended plays and evaded the rush better is a bit of a stretch..I thought his awareness and evasiveness was pretty close to the same even though there was a new coordinator..

but he improved in some other areas.

I wonder how many conversations have happened where the coaches sit him down and say ok, see this third down situation, if your first and 2nd read isn't there, just take off and get what you can, from what we've seen that convo has either never happened or he's a dear caught in head lights, cause that component is pretty much non existant...pretty weird if you ask me, and why theres criticism about situational 3rd down awareness.

This is Philbin's make-or-break year, not Tanneyhill's. When Philbin fails (and I have every confidence he will because he sucks and should have been fired already) Tanny will still be around for whoever the new HC is. The new HC won't get rid of him unless someone better is available in next year's draft or via FA.

    From the clown:

    "win more"

    Team game.

So if the defense does their ****ing job 2 or 3 times this season, we win 11 games and are in the playoffs.
