You will incur dead money on the trade if you successfully retain him as a RFA. If someone signs him to an offer sheet you will not incur dead money, but will owe the 2nd round pick on your pre-existing deal.

that doesn't make sense. Essentially it means Jerrell Freeman or whomever the RFA is will either be getting paid double [once for the dead money and then again by the team trading for him] or the team trading for him will be getting him at a cost of $0.

As a 1 year contract, there shouldn't be dead money involved unless he's cut.
