Right now it looks like the wrong move regardless of who gets taken #1 by a team that didn't really need the pick. We just have to wait and see what the actual play is if it's anything other than a QB/Winston then the Jaguars make a blunder and fall for the romanticizing of a player by the combine. Depends on if you believe WRs can make good QBs or vice versa.

I'll reserve judgement then because I don't like the move currently for the Jags.

in reading a bunch of articles about Shurmur, i was impressed at his candidness about his mistakes. Im sure he wont get a shot in the nfl again as a head coach. But, my very specific plan is to bring Kelly's offense and the person who was most intimate with it besides kelly, was shurmur. Blake Bortles is talented, but Im not sold on him. I think there are 2 - 4 free agent qbs that can be game managers and throw to very talented people. I dont need a star qb in this offense, just one that works his *** off, is smart on and off the field and can run enough to keep the defense honest.

Like I said he'll probably bring in wrinkles of Kelly's offense, but you may not get exactly what you would expect. However it also depends on the QB you have running it, you might not have been sold on Bortles but as stated before it can be seen as a lateral move. However, whoever you bring in if its not Winston will be measured by two what could have beens with both.

You still have an early second so you can land Hundley, Petty, Cato or anyone else at this point if you go White. You can also get a stop gap like Mallett, Hoyer, Locker, Ponder, Vick ect... Just a matter on perspective of resource management with these big draft pick moves.

yup! except that i wont be drafting winston, no if, ands or buts about it. That guy is a cancer off the field, i dont give two ****s about talent. Immaturity always rears it's ugly head and i already have blackmon on the team.

Seems like a lot of upset peoples in the room, and we haven't even drafted White yet..

For example...who was Philadelphia rumored to be moving up to take ...since he was hand picked to run that offense in college?

Cancerous players, by definition, are supposed to destroy teams slowly from the inside with their attitude and character flaws. Jameis Winston is a lot of things -- and if you believe he's too immature to be the face of your franchise or is a felon that hasn't been charged, that's one thing -- but a cancer is not one them. Teammates played their asses off for him. Sometimes he let them down, but they always had his back and ran through walls for him. He went, what, 26-1 as a starter? A cancer is not how I would describe him.

I get a team not taking him if they're concerned about his ability to stay out of trouble, I truly do. But the thought that he will not instantly make a team better is hard to grasp.

Got curious and started going back to look at history of WRs being selected atop the draft (looks like there will be a few Top 5 picks in our league and in real league).

WRs selected in Top 10 since 2005

    2014
    Samy Watkins (Bills, 4th)

    2013
    Tavon Austin (Rams, 8th)

    2012
    Justin Blackmon (Jags, 5th)

    2011
    A.J. Green (Bengals, 4th)
    Julio Jones (Falcons, 6th)

    2009
    Darius Heyward Bey (Raiders, 7th)

    2007 -
    Calvin Johnson (Lions, 2nd)
    Tedd Ginn (Dolphins, 9th)

    2005
    Braylon Edwards (Browns, 3rd)

Still too early close the book on Austin and Blackmon, and obviously Watkins (he'll be a stud), but it looks like 4 out of 9 really panned out. The longterm hit rate of 1st rounders the previous decade, according to Walter Football, was about 54% http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftology408_1.php . This is far from scientific, but a 44% hit rate in the top 10 is no bueno.

Top 5 picks are much better.

I think since this is a GM league where you are putting your own marks on the team...it's much easier to dismiss Winston because of character issues. Neither of us care for the rape incident. Personally I believe hes a narcicistic immature punk, who has little regard for women...so we get to ignore him. If I were really the GM of a team, I get that's a much harder thing to do.

I like White a lot, if he is there? I will certainly consider it. But it doesn't take a 4.0 GM to figure out exactly why I moved from 5 to 2....

Speaking about our trade, since a WR could be in play at number one, we decided that we both agreed Bortles was not a QB we would have drafted had we been drafting last year. I used this example, could I really argue Bortles and whomever we take @ 14 is better then White and Mallet ? Or Mariotta and a Phillip Dorset or Nelson Agolor? In both cases, I couldn't make the argument for Bortles

Bortles is a victim of the new era where people want their results NOW, people forget how bad Manning looked in the first year or 2 and Tannehill's first year was certainly nothing to be excited about. Actually it took him until about week 4 of this year to finally look the part.

Bortles will end up being a pretty good QB imo, not that I dislike the Jags move in this league it's all a matter of personal preference and I certainly don't hate it.

As for my situation at 2? To be honest having Winston in play surely changes some things, I have no reason to write off Mettenberger yet as I have done my homework on him and came back with a different view than I had a month ago.

That being said even I have no idea what direction I will go, I certainly don't hate Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright as my WRs, I don't hate Mettenberger if need be, I love me some front seven pressure defense and those guys are being put on the back burner by way too many ppl.

I agree with almost everything you said, aside from I wouldn't call it "the rape incident." At this point, it's the alleged rape. Can't argue with anything else you said, he has at the least shown disrespect towards women and has didisplayed narcissistic traits.

    Bortles on joining Denver:

"I had a chance to speak with Coach Bevell and I'm excited about the offense. Not only will I get to work with some great players but also two coaches who have developed young QBs like myself. I've been told there will be a fair amount of read option and singleback spread concepts as well as more traditional formations. I'm ready to work hard and can't wait to get into the facility"

I guess its time for me to look towards the draft and come up with a list of players at #14. I know who I want but there is always the chance he won't be there or someone else drops.
