I honestly don't think this is going to equal opportunities for Mathews. A WR in FA and Draft will likely be brought in. Those 2 + Landry + Clay is likely going to spell the same thing for Mathews. I doubt Mathews is being penciled in as anything different than what he was last season. He's just cheap and you can't cut everybody.
Yah I doubt Armando has a new quote about Matthews. Sounds like he's rehashing earlier trade wants. It was reported a while ago he had dropped trade demands.
He won't be penciled in as a starter but he will likely compete for a spot against rookie WRs, and it is much easier to win a spot in that scenario than it was when he was competing with more expensive veteran receivers.
If the rookie WR is in the 1st 2 rounds, I doubt Mathews will actually be competing with them because of the investment they put in. And it's not like you can just put him in the slot, because Landry is already holding that down. Resources are going to be allocated to the WR corps this offseason and in my opinion I don't think Mathews will be given an opportunity to compete for the Top 3 receiver spots and will certainly not be in the Top 4 passing options.
It's going to depend on whether they bring in a FA to man one of the perimeter slots, because don't think they'll trust two rookies as the starting perimeter receivers... but I think he'll get a fair shot to take one of the top 4 spots, it'll depend on whether he shows he's up for it.
My heart isn't in this team or season, and I don't have to watch my friends get canned and work for a guy I can't stand every morning. I don't blame him.
I really like Reshard and he should have been #2 receiver all along....not Hartline...if our sorry head coach, who has a real hard time evaluating good talent cannot get over his petty grudge with Matthews, I bet we could trade him to San Francisco...I am almost Positive that Kaepernick would be very happy to work with his #1 receiver from college again...He is another good talent that Philbin will run off.
I would say initially, yes. then as they mature and are no longer wet behind the ears it becomes important to win a championship and players go to places like New England and play for less just to be able to be called champion. Has a really cool ring to it ----champion that is.
Except we've heard whispers that Philbin and Matthews don't love one another... and Philbin was overriding Lazor about who to start along the OLine last year. Who's to say he doesn't throw his voice into the mix with other positions too, like WR?
Teams only get so many picks and FA dollars per year to fill the talent bucket. When you have a hole at the bottom of your bucket it's damned near impossible to build a consistent winner. We lose talent because it doesn't fit the scheme - (Come on coaches, ADAPT to use the talent in a way that maximizes it!) We lose talent because of personality issues or inability to deal with them- (Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby, Mike Wallace... and who else?) Meanwhile, the Pats don't seem to leak from the bottom of the bucket. And thus, they do quite well. The only case I can think of where the Pats did this, and it wasn't just because they player was overpriced, was shipping out Randy Moss. Though, given how Moss played afterwards some would argue that he was done anyways.
Pats leak just like every other franchise. They just have Tom Brady and BB. When you have one of the best QBs of all time and one of the best head coaches of all time. It doesn't matter who you lose.
As of April 2014 here was the list of teams from LEAST roster turnover to MOST roster turnover Team Name - Players Remaining From 2011 (as of April 2014) / Wins-Losses in 2014 Season Players remaining from 2011 (as of 2014) / Record in 201 Group A Green Bay Packers 25 / 12-4 Washington Redskins 25 / 4-12 San Francisco 49ers 24 / 8-8 Seattle Seahawks 22 / 12-4 Cincinnati Bengals 22 / 10-5 Atlanta Falcons 21 / 6-10 New England Patriots 20 / 12-4 San Diego Chargers 19 / 9-7 -------------------------- 73-54 combined .575 win pct Group B Minnesota Vikings 18 / 7-9 Denver Broncos 18 / 12-4 Baltimore Ravens 18 / 10-6 Tennessee Titans 17 / 2-14 Buffalo Bills 17 / 9-7 Pittsburgh Steelers 16 / 11-5 Philadelphia Eagles 16 / 10-6 New York Jets 16 / 4-12 --------------------------- 65-63 .508 win pct Group C New York Giants 16 / 6-10 Miami Dolphins 16 / 8-8 Houston Texans 16 / 9-7 Detroit Lions 15 / 11-5 Dallas Cowboys 15 / 12-4 Carolina Panthers 15 / 7-8-1 New Orleans Saints 13 / 7-9 Cleveland Browns 13 / 7-9 --------------------------- 67.5-60.5 .527 win pct Group D Arizona Cardinals 13 / Arizona Cardinals 11-5 Oakland Raiders 12 / 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs 12 / 9-7 Chicago Bears 10 / 5-11 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9 / 2-14 St. Louis Rams 9 / 6-10 Jacksonville Jaguars 9 / 3-13 Indianapolis Colts 7 / 11-5 --------------------------- 50-78 .390 win pct Seems like the teams that are "Elite" in the NFL have a strong tendency to low roster turnover. Teams that have very high roster turnover have the worst win percentages. In the middle, where the Dolphins are, it's a bit less clear. IIF you have a medium-amount of roster turnover you seem likely to be around 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 with some outliers.
They leak less. And every player. Every inch. Every millisecond. Every increment matters in this league. Unless you like losing narrowly.
This is perfect for the Dolphins and Tannehill. more built in excuses for his lousy play. It's not Tannehill its all the new WR's he has to work with. First it was the OL is bad, then the OC is bad, now it is the WR's are all new and it takes time......
So the team is intentionally reshaping the roster to give the QB excuses... Why even follow them then if they're that pathetic? Dumbest statement I've seen in a while.
Isn't this a correlation =/= causation thing? I mean, teams that aren't winning, tend to be in turmoil. Players unhappy, playing poorly, leaving, coaching changes, etc. Build a winning culture, you attract good players, and the players you have want to stay on your team. Oh, and how did you determine where to break the teams up, or which group to put them in? Miami, Giants, Texans are in Group C, but have16 players still, just like teams in Group B. Or the Cardinals in Group D, when other teams with 13 players were in Group C.
Its just speculation from a fan. If one believed everything they read here, Philbin would be a buck toothed dunce cap wearer with the assistants throwing poop at the players from the side lines. We released two older recievers with diminishing production, and somehow this is portrayed as a personal Philbin issue....makes perfect sense.
1. The OL WAS bad. You disagree? 2. Sherman WAS bad. You disagree? 3. I'd hope that Tannehill in his fourth year can deal with new receivers.
"Rishard Matthews @_RMatthews 32s32 seconds ago Let's get it straight. I did not ask for a trade. Nor did I ask to be released. So whatever these false articles are #MoveOn" Matthews laying down the truth!
He's probably unhappy. Too bad. He needs to be thankful he's on the team. He could be a solid #4 if he works hard enough. Sometimes he flashes that other times ... disappears.
I love (read: hate) how the fan mind works. They are pissy and grumpy, so they believe media reports over the actual player. If they are happy and the same writer says something negative, they believe the player.
