Maybe I should rephrase my post.

Raise your hand if you think this will blow up in our collective faces one way or another, as usual...

    Seriously, just stop.

We don't get used a lot. The rest of your post is a vain attempt to change your original point because it was proven wrong.

Really not much more than it would be to sign odrick and keep starks, now instead of having two guys that have decent pass rushes and decent run stopping we get an amazing rushing and great run stopper for maybe 2 mil a season more than we'd pay odrick and starks.

As long as we build in an escape clause in the 3rd or 4th year, I'm fine with it. Its all about the guaranteed money. The rest is just contract fluff. I doubt he ever sees the last year of his contract no mater who signs him.

If we do land Suh, him and Tannehill will end up being our most expensive players. But I'd argue a franchise QB and a game-changing defensive lineman are the two most important positions in football.

I don't know. I'm firmly in a spot where I'll be happy either way. Sign him? Great, we have one of the best D-lines in the game and two of the best defensive players in football who will make everyone else better. Don't sign him? Fine, now we have plenty of money to spend on other players.

    Either way I'm fine.

Not sure how I fell about this.On one hand he is unlike wallace a top 3 player at his postion if not the best.We would have a def line that would rival the bills.Imagine wake and vernon off the edge with suh collapsing the middle.Nowhere to go tom but on your ***!
The other hand I don't want to lose wallace because now our young QB has no weapons and we will have to count on rookies to step right in or some middle of the road free agent. Not to mention 100 mil dollar contract he is going to command. Not to mention we have no corners and its a week draft for them.

It does seem that Suh is all about getting paid. Objectively, why would you come to a team that has a coach/GM on a one-year deal? Would not stability and a chance for the playoffs most years be important? Why not look for a team that you could be the final piece for a Super Bowl push?

Suh has worked his butt off, so he can get this HUGE contract.....

    then he can relax....

Can't get used if your not going up to bat. I like going to bat better than sitting on the bench watching, once in a while you get a hit that way.

If he was interested in stability and playoffs, hed stay with The lions. The teams that are seriously going to make a run at him are the jags, raiders, redskins, and dolphins.

Some of you need to keep in mind how contracts work. we can make his cap hit low this year and bigger others, like Wallace. Just because we don't have a huge amount of cap space this year doesn't mean we don't in upcoming years

I agree with this line of thinking. And, it's not like there's much risk in what we're getting. He's not injury-prone the way Branden Albert is. He's not limited in his skill set the way Mike Wallace is. Albert's damn good, and Mike Wallace was the best receiving option on the roster last year, and is now given the nature of things at present. Ndamukong Suh has only missed 2 games, and not because of injury (suspension). He's been an All-Pro 4 of his 5 seasons. He's elite. Miami only has one other elite player on the the roster right now (Wake). You have to pay top dollar to acquire a talent such as this, but Suh doesn't come with the risks that players Miami's ALREADY paid top dollar for have come with.

Yes, Suh is only one player, but IMO, I think his impact makes things a lot easier for the defensive line as a whole. He's a brilliant run defender; virtually everyone in Miami's front seven, especially the interior guys, got their @$$ handed to them down the stretch last year against the run. He creates pressure on his own in the passing game (see the playoff game against Dallas) and will help free up Wake, Vernon, Mitchell, etc. on the front line. A more potent pass-rush alleviates you from having to sign Darrelle Revis, or someone of that nature, to play opposite Grimes; you can probably suffice with a Patrick Robinson, Chris Culliver, Walter Thurmond III, Jamar Taylor, etc. and still be alright; just look at the Lions corners last year.

So while Suh is only one player, and he will be expen$ive, I think it's worth it both in the short-term and long-term as the salary cap is fungible enough for you to maneuver money around what would be his massive, and presumably, Ryan Tannehill's very large contracts. Does it mean you may not be able to re-sign someone like an Olivier Vernon or Lamar Miller down the line? Yeah, maybe. But that's a risk I think Miami should be willing to take.

And as Rocky has stated, if you don't sign him, then you still have money left over to re-sign Jared Odrick and still play around in the free agency pool quite a bit. Dennis Hickey's best contribution last year may very well have been identifying UDFAs. Miami had 5 of them make the 53 man roster week 1 - Darkwa, Williams, Hoskins, Johnson and McCain - so if he's able to hit another Draft and UDFA class like he did last year (remains to be seen, but I think it's damn well within the realm of possibility) I wouldn't feel so about about not signing as many players in free agency because the quality of Suh is what it is - elite.

Palm Beach Post quoting former Phins Guard Keith Sims

"To anyone worried that if the Dolphins sign Ndamukong Suh, they wouldn’t have any money left under the salary cap to sign other good players, Keith Sims offers a word to the contrary.Says Sims, a former Dolphins Pro Bowl guard: “If you get a guy like Ndamukong Suh, it would attract other free agents to be part of the mix, something the Patriots have mastered for years, of putting together a team that is typically in contention so players would take less money to come and be part of that championship-caliber team.”
    [IMG]Suh

There’s one other team Sims could point to for proof: the Heat. Remember when players were lining up to play alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh?
Maybe Suh helped Detroit earn a discount with talent, but combine South Florida, no state income tax and a potentially dominating defensive line and the Dolphins would appear enticing.
Now that the Lions declined to use the franchise tag on Suh, their All-Pro defensive tackle, word is he’ll command at least $100 million on the market. Insiders have Miami on a short list of logical landing spots."

Suh may be just one player but he would make everyone around him better. The other defensive lineman will have more freedom with double teams on Suh and Suh blowing up plays early can create opportunities for others. We got a hole a middle linebacker but with Suh any middle linebacker will have a much easier time playing with him. Elite players like Suh would make everyone better. A better pass rush up the middle would help the secondary as well. The more I think about it the more I'm ok with this.

Obviously it is an entirely different line of thinking than what we have had here in awhile. Do we sign middle tier to above average guys across the board or go for a dominant guy who might make the players around him better

I'm at the point now, based on what we've heard, that I'm trying not to set myself up for disappointment. It's going to be a long couple of days until March 10th and I'd at least like have the Dolphins to look forward to as I don't think my Dayton Flyers have another run as good as last year's up their sleeves and the Reds, well...just "ugh".

Where d'you hear this? You think after signing Suh we'd go all out on defense? I'd rather we continue piling up potential difference makers at their respective positions, not that Kendricks wouldn't be one, but I don't think he has top 10 talent in this draft... IMO, we should trade up for Cooper or White to make our offense more dynamic.

Suh is consistently near the top of the league among DTs with QB hits (and batted balls and sacks and success rate and tackles for loss). Tom Brady would take around 80 drop backs a year against him.
