As I read these threads I can't help but notice most are acting like this one guy is going to be the savior of the Miami Dolphins. It seems as if the optimism is causing us to ignore or not really worry about what is staring us in the face. There are still a lot of holes in this team. We are bumping up against the cap and now it is being reported Suh is going to get 60 mill guaranteed first 3 years. We still have to resign Tannehill or is this where it gets interesting?? I have seen Tannehill numbers at 15 mill a yr. Is it possible we could possibly loose Tannehill if we can't come up with the coin to pay him, given all our other obligations which look heavy. www.overthecap.com I am not saying it is not possible. What I do see is this team will look nothing like it did 3 months ago next year in order to make this happen. Mike Wallace's days are definitely numbered and Tannehill may have to take a pay cut to continue playing here or test free agency. I thing letting a 4000 yrd QB test free agency would be a huge mistake, but I guess they could always tag him. Of course that could back fire in our faces if we are not careful and someone bids him up. So for the purpose of this thread : What holes do we still need to fill and what will our team look like. I got a feeling we will be signing a lot of inexpensive young players.
One guard, one backup guard, a WR for depth, one starting LB, one CB for depth, on safety. Draft and the rest of free agency. Plenty of time and resources available. we should be a playoff team next year given growth from Tannehill, Landry, Clay, Wallace, Turner, James, Dion Jordan, etc.
linebackers we can patch it up a bit.. safety and cornerback has to be addressed... receiver and guard has to be addressed.. My guess is. we're going receiver or trae waynes the first round, we're going to rely on Albert's health and put anyone at guard. and we'll look into a safety via trade or free agency..
This franchise is so jaded. We're signing one of the greatest defensive players of all time, IN HIS PRIME, and people are looking like they're sucking on lemons. Oh, and we should draft a receiver in round one.
I kno right? ****ing depressing. We get one of the most dominant defense players in the game and all I see is negative bull****.
Quit Insulting our intelligence 2socks...most my ***. You should delete your post and rewrite it.."whats left to do" would be more appropriate. Not even gonna discuss sh98 when you take that approach..
No one is saying him alone will help this team contend. Don't put words into other people's mouths. But with him making everyone better it's not like they need a HOF LB playing behind him. They are still shedding salary cap and will cut Wallace at least by next year. You need to pay some guys big, some will take pay cuts, and you got the draft where guys won't be making a load of money. They can still sign 2 or 3 more guys and then keep building through the draft. Chill dude.
suh does help fix a lot of issues on defense, i doubt with him we will be giving up 200 yards on the ground to teams.
People act like the Dolphins FO hasn't examined every angle here, and figured out how they can get the players they want/need if they sign Suh. That what these guys are paid to do. Let them do their jobs. Let's enjoy our defense stomping opponents next season. Let's enjoy Wake coming off the end without double teams. Let's enjoy teams not sending RBs or QBs straight up the middle on us next season. Let's enjoy opposing QBs not having ask day to throw against us. Let's enjoy it.
Totally agree with those 4 in total, but I think MLB is less of a need with Suh on the line. They (whoever plays there) should be able to focus more on the coverage portion. Mine would be: 1) Big, physical, can go up and get the ball WR, young vet or draftee; 2) CB, somebody young and promising, or no-lose draftee, which will be hard; 3) Guard(s)...take off the (s) if Billy's good to go. Tired of the OL issues; 4) MLB, lots of options there. Do you think Tannenbaum has faith in Hickey's low-round drafting ability? Seems they're going to need to hit some deep picks / UDFAs this year.
I'm saying it...had he been on the Dolphins last year, and his $19M per year isn't even horrible to me...the cap just went up $10M. We (no doubt whatsoever in my mind) would've been in the playoffs. Denver game woulda been a blowout...KC game would've been much closer if not a W...Baltimore game was close for the most part, he would have made a major difference there. Possibly even sweeps of the Jests and Jills. Green Bay game....nevermind...that one's stricken from memory...gone with Wheeler. I say he makes us a contender for a deep playoff shot...as long as the other holes are at least filled with average to above-average players (except WR...need a beast)...don't need pro-bowlers, and can't make Ellerbe/Wheeler mistakes (not that they could afford to anyway...even with the cap going up $10M). Tannenbaum/Hickey have been in the league long enough to work this.
Safety: Jones - XXX CB: XXX - Grimes LB: (W)Jenkins - (M) XXX - (S) Misi DL: Vernon - Mitchell - Suh - Wake RB: Miller (Williams) QB: Tannehill (XXX) TE: Clay (Sims) Out WR: Wallace - XXX Slot WR: Landry - Matthews OL: Albert - Turner - Pouncey - XXX - James Those are the 6 major holes. Fill in the XXX's. - Not sure about Shelly Smith's chances of filling in that Guard hole, I would hope not, but he has yet to be cut. - For the most part I like our young depth players who won't be starting. But OL, S, RB and DB might need some cheap depth added (on top of the 6 holes).
Can see the Dolphins going defense heavy with the rest of their FA, and then go offense heavy in the draft. Reports surfacing so far suggest they're looking at CBs and Ss. I can see them getting a CB and a S, maybe even a linebacker on the low, then going for young offensive play-makers in the draft.
What negative bull****?? Bull**** because you say it is. What horse did you ride in on?? Because some, myself included, want to make sure we can afford it Can't speak for anyone else, but I would like to make sure we are not mortgaging the entire future of the franchise on one ****ing guy. If we were one guy away - maybe. But we are not even close to being one guy away. Talk about the playoffs all you want, but as I have repeatedly said, the object is not to make the playoffs, it is to win the super-bowl. Suh is not going to make that happen I don't care how much you pay him.
Yep we need 5 more players. I think they can do it. 1st round receiver, 2nd MLB, CB, S, and G in free agency. But next offseason they will have better cap room once Wallace is gone. But maybe Jamar Taylor can be that CB. He had moments of doing well before his injury. With the defensive line better whoever is a CB will have an easier time. So will the MLB.
Really adding a guy like him doesn't make you closer to the Super Bowl? Who said building this team is over? No one here is saying Suh is the last piece but he is a big piece. This team has been close to the playoffs. Add Suh, some other players, and the continual development of the young guys this team I believe can one day do it. But it's not over yet. Let's see what happens rest of free agency and the draft.
Problem is you did speak for everyone else when you said MOST are calling him a savior. That is not the case. Just trying to enjoy a day when we signed a great player and possible future HOFer. We added a piece to this team. Great players cost money. Can we even enjoy this day as Dolphin fans?
thats right, and thats all I'm saying, don't categorize the majority as some crowd that is saying what it is your presenting..thats wrong and all it does is perpetuate a negative narrative, completely unnecessary. if you want talk about how we can fit other players under the cap with a contract this size then frame your question correctly, which is not saying that ''most'' of us are spouting off thinking we won the Super Bowl.
Looks like Chargers are signing Franklin. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ort-chargers-franklin-have-agreement-in-place
Good chance Wallace wont be here,Who knows with Turner,Dion Jordan has shown squat so tell me where's the growth?
Man I'd kill to see the team pull in 2 big time WRs in this draft. I know it's a reach, I'd just love to see it. I'm so high on DGB.
Team I'm most worried about landing DGB is the Pats. I can just see it.. DGB falling and falling because of character concerns .. and BAM! Belichick gets a steal.
We have some young players who will have to step up. Matthews, Thomas, Turner, Jordan, Taylor, Aikens, Thomas, etc. Starks is probably gone so add Johnson/Francis. CB, MLB, WR, S are the spots to focus on.
Here is who I'd target for each of the things on your list: 1) Big, physical, can go up and get the ball WR, young vet or draftee - Double up in the draft on Amari Cooper in Round One (move up using 3rd rounder this year and 3rd and 5th round picks from 2016... typical Tannenbaum) and nab Vince Mayle in round 4. 2) CB, somebody young and promising, or no-lose draftee, which will be hard; - Disagree. I think you go non-expensive Free Agent here, maybe one old and one young - Rashean Mathis and one of Culliver or Robinson. Then you hope Taylor or Davis takes a step. 3) Guard(s)...take off the (s) if Billy's good to go. Tired of the OL issues; - Have a feeling Turner will play. I'd look at a middling Free Agent (don't care who and don't know the mediocre Guard market well enough), would also bring in a 5th round Guard and give him a legit chance to impress in the rotation in camp. 4) MLB, lots of options there - I want Kendricks. But we'd have to move up to get him. I think that looks like our 2nd round pick, plus the 2016 2nd round pick and this years 6th and throw in a player like Matthews who is a decent WR that this staff simply won't play. This approach fills a lot of holes. But it also means w only have a 1st, 4th, 6th and 7th in the 2016 draft. I think it's worth it to come away with Cooper and Kendricks, plus other prospects in your pocket. UDFA's would have to include a power running back and developmental TE with great measurables (think small school). haven't scouted TE prospects enough yet to know who that would be or if he even exists this year.
Safety: Delmas and pray someone develops as his injury replacement. CB: One of Mathis/Culliver/Robinson - unless out-competed by Taylor in camp. LB: Kendricks via draft QB: Don't care who backs Tanny up. Outside WR: Amari Cooper & Vince Mayle for REDZONE OL (Guard): Have a mediocre FA and 5th rounder compete. It's the Dolphins way.
This staff would have to change philosophically and become highly willing to put a lot more first year players out there as starters, imo, for that to be a viable way to build a winner with your suggested approach. I don't disagree with you, if you have a staff that gets rookies, and second year guys prepared and into the line-up quickly. And not low-snap count roles. Heavy lifting.
Youre def right about the staff not playing rooks. Hopefully some of that was bc Ireland wasn't getting them the types of players they wanted. I'd he happy with two starters and 3-4 depth guys out of the draft, hopefully at CB, MLB, WR, FS. Still, the young guys are gonna have to step up, I'm fairly confident they'll be able to do it. Like you said, it's on the staff to coach em up and not be afraid to put em out there.
There are just a handful man. Most of us here love the move. 2 socks does not understand that they are probably paying Suh in mostly bonus money this year so his cap hit won't be hard till next year. However, we are setup to have a ton of cap space next year. That easily will extend RT. Tough mdecisions are still to be made but that's every year.
