You're underestimating how much a player like Suh makes the LB unit better. In fact whether it is a 3-4 or a 4-3 I will take a dominant defensive line with average linebackers rather than the reverse. Also did we suddenly lose all of our draft picks by signing him? Did we have to forfeit them? Because as far as I know we still have all the picks we had before signing Suh. Being realistic if your team has a great draft you get 3 starters. However that isn't always the case. 53/3 = 18 years to field a full roster. Those players obviously come from somewhere...namely free agency. Which is used to supplement the draft. There is absolutely no winning team in the league composed entirely of drafted players. If we had drafted Suh ourselves would it be okay to sign him to this contract? Because that is how you keep the players you draft. Your post is a paradox. You can't build through the draft over time without paying the good players money or signing free agents.
You're comparing a situation that is actually reasonable to a situation you made up that could never happen in a million years.
I understand your reasoning and also agree with you, but the math you wrote down here is wrong. You said in a good draft you get about 3 starters, but your roster isn't made up of 53 starters. If you include 11 guys on offense and defense plus a few special teamers, you get about 25 starters, give or take, the rest are second and third stringers. You can argue that some other postions are also "starters" such as slot receiver, nickleback, gunner, etc, so we'll bump that number up to 27 to simplify the math. So 27/3= 9 years to build a roster So it is possible for a team to be built almost entirely through the draft, but that is obviously extremely hard as it would require perfect drafts year in and year out, as well as re-signing your own players pretty much 100% of the time. So your point still stands, free agency serves big a purpose in the NFL, just not in the magnitude that you put it.

Suh also eats up a lot of snaps. In his career, from 2014 working back, he has finished 2nd, 5th, 2nd, 10th, and 1st, among DTs. The year he was 10th was the year he missed two games with suspension.
I don't. Trace Armstrong had 16.5 sacks when he was 35 yrs old. He had more treadwear by that point and not the fitness regimen that Wake has. Wake is not the typical 33 year old DE.
None of us can know until we see how the base salaries are laid out. Most likely the base salary will be lowest this year, and highest next year when we have a lot of cap room.

I wish I had more faith in this coaching staff to be excited about this. After the way we finished the last two seasons, I can't be excited about any move other then getting rid of philbin. I think we are just stuck with average with him regardless of who we bring in. If we reach the playoffs, it probably means we keep him too. Nothing to get excited about for me personally.

I don't know. I bet that argument can be said about players on just about every team. I thought they put Landry in a good position to succeed. Tannehill was put in a good position to succeed. They know Tannehill's deep ball isn't the greatest for Wallace, and we saw Wallace fight for the underneath stuff moreso last year than in years past. YES, they should've cut Dallas Thomas, but he was thrown to the wolves, and there aren't many teams with a backup tackle who can hold their own against some of the better pass rushers in the league. Dion Jordan? Maybe Jordan hasn't earned his spot considering his issues, injury and PEDs. I thought they used McCain nicely in his limited play. Fede had a nice conversion. They have nice depth on the defensive front, just suck on the back end. Offensive line depth is shoddy. Unfortunately, you cannot have it all. I think these are examples of the coaches putting players in a position to succeed, albeit in a limited capacity. But the McCain and Fede instances ultimately led to points. I just think the argument can be made on many teams. It is just very tough to be solid across the board. Injuries happen. Salary cap. Depth is an issue. Sometimes the players just don't show up. I agree, coaching can go a long way. Sometimes, the players just need to play.
Well, I'm on board. I just pray to God he stays healthy. If Suh can continue his dominant ways, his acquisition makes the Dolphins' offseason a lot easier moving forward. We basically can't lose as long as we add CB, WR, and Guard high in the draft.
With this signing, I think you will see Miami win these tough games. I don't care what people say about Miami's record, you know you are going to get a damned hard-fought game when you are playing Miami. Suh could become that equalizer late in games. The defensive unit as a whole becomes better, and you could see a game or two where these late drives from teams get stonewalled. My issue is the back end. There needs to be some better DBs out there opposite Grimes and Jones. If Miami's D gets off the field late in these games last year, you're looking at a 10-6 team at least. Now, they need a monster RB with vision and decisiveness. The holes have to be hit hard and quickly. A stud RB late in games keeps the clock moving. I think this is what Miami has been building. And with Moreno last year, this is what they wanted. One could argue that Miami makes the playoffs last year if this one single player did not go down, and he went down early. They didn't sign Suh for the hell of it. I think everyone believes in what is happening in South Florida. You don't do this if you are rebuilding. You just don't. If the powers that be didn't believe in this staff and players, this signing doesn't happen. Plain and simple. On the flip side, this could go all wrong and the team just falls backward on their ***. But Suh is a damned prescence that I think this team will rally around.

I think that's a bit of a crazy thought. I get that he's a QB, he's young, he's played well, but he's won nothing. Not even a playoff spot. I don't think he can demand to be the highest paid player on the roster in those circumstances. Everyone knows he's going to get paid, and paid well, but he's not going to be one of these deals like a guy like Wilson, or Luck are going to get. It should be very incentive based too because of the fact he hasn't earned much.
All I'm going to say is I really don't like him as a person and I don't trust the Philben regime to be able to control his massive stupidity.
Actually, reading that ESPN article on Suh, I came away with a totally different perspective on him as a person. I think it's more accurate now for me to say that I have a hard time reconciling what I've seen on the field from him, and what he apparently is off the field. He's seemingly a very intelligent, caring young man off the field.
Look, I get it. He's wearing our laundry so now bygones and all that. I'm sure if we go back through the general NFL threads we'll see some different thoughts about him and his persona when no one thought he'd come here. Whatever. I'm not a fan of the drama on this team the last two years and this guy has certainly brought that since his NFL debut. It's not just about him, but a coaching staff that has shown a complete lack of discipline from top to bottom. If we had a group running the club that I trusted, I'd be fine with the risk that he's gonna smarten up and mature and cut out the cheap shots. I completely get I'm in the minority and he's a great player and that's all that should matter. But the league's gonna target him, so be ready to complain liberally about how unfair this and that is, or that punching guys in the sack or stepping on faces was legal 40 years ago and whatnot and he's "just a firey, emotional guy".
Look a little more into it though, he can a beast on the field, but off the field, he seems calculated & smart. Just read up on him. I think he also works with kids.
