    Randy Starks Cut....

DT Randy Starks has been cut by the Dolphins this morning

He was a really good FA signing and he prolly still has some gas in the tank as a rotational guy.

    Well away from here
There's your Clay money. I can see the trade off, if you need to replenish the position there are more options via the draft than there are at the TE position. And, Starks' play did decline last season compared with that of previous years.

    Notice a pattern?

Players whose salaries were not justified by their contributions on the field.

I'd venture to say that the "analytics" emphasis the team has incorporated is going to work and identifying as its first order of business the "salary-to-contribution ratio" of the entire roster.

that's what happens when you are mediocre year after year - change. At least they are trying to find the right combo.

Well the computer must have been broken, when the analysis on Suh was done, because there is no way he'll ever be worth $ 20 million a year.

We'll see. No way to know that now...and the salary cap climbs a good bit every year. $20M doesn't mean what it did 5 or 10 years ago.

We had Randy during the prime of his years. He may have been one of the more underrated players in the NFL at one point. He was a beast.

Too bad, i hope he comes back at a reduced salary. Randy and Suh would be a mean, belligerent, nasty and fun to watch duo. I think the two personalities would feed each other for some reason. Wish him well.

Don't need analytics for that. Eyeball test and basic math would have given you the same cuts with odrick being the one exception Imo. Will be an interesting experiment to use odricks 2015 season to see which is a better way of analyzing

The eyeball test isn't going to tell you someone's salary-to-productivity ratio with any degree of precision.

I don't know about that. Is precision necessary? If they are being too much it's pretty easy to see. If you're talking restructuring contracts sure I can see the need for precision, but some guys it's is just too easy to see they are not producing versus what they're paid; Hartline is a classic example.

If you're trying to maximize the production you're getting for your limited salary cap allotment, the greater the accuracy and precision in that effort, the better.

"Team A" could be trying to pull that off with the eyeball test, and "Team B" that's doing it statistically could in fact have a significant competitive advantage based on that alone.

Of course it will. Many of the things these players do aren't even quantified with stats. If you are a GM writing checks based on PFF stats, you are going to write yourself out of a job. See Jeff Ireland.

OK, well then using your eyeballs alone, tell me how much more productive Cameron Wake is than the average defensive end in the NFL, on a per-dollar basis, when taking his and the average end's salary cap hit into consideration.

And remember, since you'll be using your eyeballs alone, you won't be able to refer to any information other than what you're seeing on the field in determining his salary cap hit or that of the average defensive end in the NFL.

    Good luck. :)

There's a reason these analytics people are being hired and paid good money to do their work, folks.

Yeah, this debate really centers on whether the gain in precision through stats outweighs the possible loss in accuracy, because the stats might not possibly capture everything.

    Debate away.. haha!

Well I know one thing -- the stats are certainly going to capture what the player's salary is, and there ain't a soul here who's going to see that with his eyeballs.

I hope you're right. Still, Delmas is an injury prone guy coming off a major injury, a question mark even if he returns. Hickey better be on his friggin job bc it's lookin like we will have quite a few young, unproven guys and bargain bin FAs having to play significant roles this year.

Ellerbe is not gone yet. Report in the Herald said they want to try to rework his contract. Delmas is likely to get re-signed at some point. His issue is staying healthy. D was definitely better on the back end when he and Jones were there together.
