With the youth we have at WR, do you think we should sign a veteran like Reggie Wayne at the right price for 1 year?
I think someone like that can provide vetran leadership to the Offense and also help groom our VERY young WR corps.

Here is a list of available Free Agent WRs - still some usable talent

If we aren't looking for a guy in the draft, i'd be all about someone like Brandon Lloyd or Stevie Johnson or Crabtree.

I think you do on a cheap(er) 2 year. Always need a veteran presence, especially at WR.

First off, the Dolphins have plenty of veterans on the team. It's not like they have to have a veteran WR as part of some mandatory decree. I would think that the team would try to get younger, faster, and more explosive players at the skill positions rather than mediocre vets. I certainly don't care one bit about washed up, over-the-hill veterans like Reggie Wayne. No sir. I wouldn't even consider that kind of move. Hell, half the players on that list would have trouble just making our roster with Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Reshard Matthews and a high-round draft pick all competing for spots.

However, the bigger problem with that list that nearly every player would either have scheme-fit, discipline or age and health issues from the onset.

I wouldn't mind grabbing a stopgap receiver like a Reggie Wayne on a 1 year deal and still drafting Amari Cooper or DeVante Parker at 14 (or trading up a couple spots if need be).

ideally, I would like to grab a vet receiver on a 1 year deal and draft a stud in the first, as well as a guy in the 4th or 5th (like a Josh Harper, who is extremely reliable). That gives us Reggie Wayne, DeVante Parker or Amari Cooper, Jarvis Landry, Josh Harper, Rishard Matthews, and Jordan Cameron. Solid targets for Tanny

I'd take Bowe. He would like to be here, he's a veteran, he's a good compliment to Wallace. I love Alex Smith but his strength is not getting the ball out wide, and it's certainly not down the field. I think Bowe could experience a resurgence on the right team and might not be too expensive.

This is where losing that 3rd hurt. A 3rd was exactly what we needed to trade up to #10, before Minnesota and Cleveland according to this chart:

Which would be a very good idea, IMO. I like Jennings. His production drop off had more to do with the QB situation in Minnesota. At 31, I think he's worth a short term contract. He's a very well rounded WR who does everything very well. Stills may be more of specialist and Landry is the slot guy, so if we hit the FA market looking for a WR, it's going to be hard to top a jack of all trades type like Greg Jenning's. Would be a very smart pickup, IMO.

Why would bringing in a veteran necessarily preclude the team from drafting a receiver? I think even a guy like Santana Moss would give you a year's worth of veteran saavy at a low cost.

Cecil Shorts would be a nice addition. He'd fit the offense well, comes relatively cheap, and is a proven NFL receiver. I'd prefer to stay away from a veteran who is "over the hill." The Dolphins need to stay young and explosive. Shorts is in his prime at only 27 years old; only downside is a few games missed with hamstring issues.

Adding Shorts would give Miami two young, proven threats in Stills and Cecil, and then two youngsters in Landry and (hopefully) an early round selection such as Cooper/White, Jaelan Strong, or DGB. Add in Jordan Cameron and possibly Charles Clay, and Tannehill will be sleeping well at night.

Shorts or Jennings would be interesting considering we like to throw a lot of short passes. Both are good after the catch players. Dat YAC.

I keep seeing Shorts described as suffering from soft tissue injury. Is this in his arch? anyone know?
of the rest of the list, Wayne intrigues me as a possibility, not sure he considers us a big contender though

No, not a bonafide #1 receiver but certainly a great contributor and solid #2/3. I'd take him over the more overrated Bowe and Crabtree every day - and he'll come much cheaper. I imagine you could snatch him for something around 3 yrs/$13 million.

I would like to think we would be smart enough to as an insurance policy in case the draft doesn't fall like we thought it would. Only makes sense.

I would like to see Rishard Matthews have a meaningful role. Tannenbaum may have to force Philbin's hand to get him on the field.

If you're keeping Clay, both signing and drafting a guy is a bit crowded.

It depends on whether Clay comes back or not. If so, then definately not.

If Clay is gone, then maybe, but my preference is to take a WR at #14. If you sign a vet, then that means that either the rookie or Stills gets bumped down to #4 on the depth chart and doesn't see the ball very much.

Need a S, CB and OG way more than we need a veteran receiver. Wouldn't mind Crabtree or Jennings on the cheap, but the focus should be on other areas.

When I made my first post, I didn't realize we had traded Wallace. I had been inactive for a few days and not in the loop. Bowe would still go well with Stills however.

I don't know what you mean by that so maybe you can provide some reasoning. Bowe was a guy I thought of too but I don't really like him today the way I did 3-4 years ago. Sometimes it can be hard to erase the image from your mind of what someone used to be.

His drop percentage ain't good (7.5%) but it's actually comparable to most of the league's outside WRs who get targeted often so I won't hold that against him. More to the point though, the guy caught 0 touchdowns last year while catching an average of 4 balls per game. That tells me he is semi-productive in moving the chains as a part-time possession WR but he's not the big red-zone target people think he is, nor is he someone who will come in and get a lot of targets. So Bowe for us would be a part-time possession WR that helped move the chains. Well, that was Brian Hartline last year and we all saw how woefully inept he became in this offense. We just flat out didn't use him.

We lost a speedster in Mike Wallace but we gained another in Kenny Stills so assuming that we again move the ball up and down the field well this year (as we did last year) I'm not sure what Dwayne Bowe really offers us that Brian Hartline didn't. Keep in mind that this offense wants speed a heck of a lot more than it does slower possession WRs. I think Dwayne Bowe would wind up being a big underachiever in Bill Lazors offense.

That's why I wouldn't be that interested in Bowe. Do you see it differently?

He is 27, so I would be interested for a prove it type of veteran deal. I year guaranteed on a three year deal. He averaged 5.3 million on his last contract, so I am not sure that we can get a bargain price.

shorts is always injured, no use in signing him imo. unless they rebuilt his hamstring for the billionth time.

I see Alex Smith as a severely limiting factor. He's never been overly successful getting the ball out wide. I don't think Bowe has regressed, I think he needs to find himself in a better situation and should come fairly cheap.

Not if he doesn't get a guard or two that we don't mistake for a turnstile. But ya...that'd be a very nice group!
