So you choose not to count any of our 6 picks in this years draft for depth? Why? And there are only 12 other teams with more cap space than the Dolphins right now.
Mike Tannenbaum built those defenses. Not Eric Mangini. Rex Ryan didn't have personnel control. We're talking scheme and game planning, and Ryan is one of the best.
because we are talking about free agents not drafts. besides the guy said that is AFTER we draft guys... so half the league has more cap space than us.......
What we really need is another thread on Joe Philbin and why he wasn't fired This happened 4 months ago and there isn't anything we can do about. Then again, some people have not had their fill of whining and *****ing about it so I guess there is a need.
You do realize we have 20.8 million in cap space right now. So you need about 5 million for rookies after the draft and that leaves 15 million. That is plenty for three or four guys in the second tier of free agency. And that does not include the 7 million more that would be freed up if Clay signs elsewhere. The Dolphins are in good shape as far as cap room goes this year.
Ross is the only one currently with the authority to fire Philbin. He has committed to keeping him. It is a good trait to keep your word, and I am not going to criticize Ross for keeping his word.
I thought I remembered seeing Mangini sitting in the front row Thats awesome We are in good hands then Sky's the limit Its about time
We need to be careful this year, we have our work cut out for us. What I worry about is next year --- Suh's cap hit alone is 28.6 million dollars and our QB has a fifth year option which is 16 million. Tannehill will get somewhere close to 6yrs/100 million. We have other big names all with money kicked down the road (wake, albert) Lets hope the revenue goes way up so the cap follows suit
Where are you seeing 20 million? I have seen 16 million. Right now we have $110 in salary commitments for 2016. Wake needs to prove his worth (which I think he will), however that could be a year he could be willing to restructure to add money. Same with Grimes and Jones. Also Fields has a $4 million cap hit. Koa Misi is another player who Miami can open up some funds easily. So they have at least 5 players they can open up space with. They do need to be cautious, however it isn't as bad as you are making it out to be.
The problem with your logic is that Coughlin had already shown as the head coach of the Jaguars that he was a very good head coach. Comparing Philbin to Couglin, who has taken two different teams to the playoffs and has two SB wins as the head coach of the Giants makes absolutely no sense at all. The only reason Philbin is still the head coach of the Dolphins is because Ross has shown that he tends to stick with below average talent longer than he should. He did it with Sparano and Ireland and we know how that turned out. Philbin should have been fired after last season but because of Ross's soft spot for him, he was allowed to come back for one more year. I have no doubt the Dolphins will have a new HC when the 2016 begins.
I have no problem with that. Belicheck was fired in his first head coaching job with the Browns, as Philbin should be with the Dolphins. If he goes to a second team and has the same success Belichick has had with the Patriots, you can certainly tell me, you told me so. Of course once he is fired after next season, I really don't see any other franchise hiring him to be their head coach.
All of that could be said for Belichick too. I thought Philbin was gonna be great. At this point I was wrong, but he's not worse than average. He can go up or down at this point, but I genuinely don't get the notion that he's terrible.
I stand corrected. I was reading about new contract somewhere and have obviously confused the number with what he is going to get as our QB. I am basing the new contract assumption on where he fits in the line of QB productivity. Contracts of guys like Flacco , Kaepernick, Romo, Cutler, Stafford, Smith. 2 things the Dolphins have just put in Tannehills favor. 1. who is our back up??? I think he has 3 names and been on 7 teams 2. If he can not out produce his 4000 yard year because they changed all his receivers, well..................good excuse Tannehill is going to get paid and it is going to be large. Not sure why you think I am trying to make things sound bad. I just stated we need to be careful. Because we do. Next year is going to be a challenge. Don't forget Kenny Stills contract is up in 2017 as well. The days of $585,000 are over. If he doesn't play well , ok. But I got a feeling he will do pretty well and he is also going to want to get paid. The sky is not falling as one poster informed me previously, but I never said it was. I am a conservative by nature so I always try to dot my i's and cross my t's before hand not after. We need to be careful not to end up like the jets did previously when we all know who put the team together there. Sure Tannenbaum gave Ryan those defenses and they almost won the super-bowl. But almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Jets Have been a team in decline for 8 yrs as a result. Just don't want to be that team.
I agree he is just an average head coach. After more than a decade of average to below average head coaches, it would be nice to have a head coach who can develop the talent and inspire his team far more than Philbin seems capable of doing. It's pretty sad when you can look at a coach like Wannstedt and see that he was a far better head coach than Philbin. Wannstedt was terrible when it came to player personnel decisions, but when it came to X's and O's, I would take him over Philbin any day of the week. I feel this way and one of my happiest days as a Dolphin fan was the day Huizenga got rid of Wannstedt.
I do agree with this. So far I like the moves he has made, however I am still wary. The Jets are still paying for his mistakes.
I disagree. I think he is a poor head coach. he is a good quality control coach and that is the best service he provides the phins. As a head coach, I think he is below par.
What is a "quality control coach"? When you've got to reach to say something positive about a coach, you know your coach isn't anything special.
Someone who sets up practice and works with the coaches. IMO, Miami does a good job having a solid practice schedule. I have yet to hear a bad thing about how they practice. That is Philbin. They are a disciplined team who starters are very prepared. Heck they put in an entirely different offense that only took about 4 weeks to start humming into the season. I do think that is impressive. However when it comes to game management and player management I think he is poor game management and awful at player management. Really, really awful at managing players.
You could be right about that but it could also be attributed to the offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor. I remember either reading or watching something about how the Dolphins practices were different and impressive but it didn't help the team. You can practice Sherman's offense very well with Ireland's players and Philbin's development skills and suck major ***. Funny how "quality control" and Philbin are in the same sentence considering we have a losing record with him. He hasn't done anything to prove he's part of the solution. As a matter of fact, I can make a strong argument that he's one of the biggest problems, if not the biggest.
Say what you want about Philbin, however he isn't 100% terrible. I think he is bad at his overall job, however he does have some good qualities.
This is a guy who hasn't gotten along with many talented players we've had since he got here. He didn't wanna keep ANYBODY on the leadership council. This is a guy who brought in his old teacher and was unwilling to fire him despite Sherman being a weak link. Philbin also allowed nepotism by having Zac Taylor hired as QB coach. Anybody got any idea what he brings to the team? How about Philbin and Coyle keeping Wheeler and Ellerbe on the field until Ellerbe was injured? Jenkins and McCain proved to be upgrades. Even Jordan was great in pass protection including against Gronkowski. How about Philbin giving Rodgers time to get a TD against Wheeler? I'm sure I'm missing more points but the only thing that saved Philbin was a freak special teams play against the Vikings. Our moronic owner somehow took that as a sign to EXTEND Philbin when he should've fired him the following week in a loss to the Jets at the end of the season (AGAIN).
I think you are being ridiculous. Are you arguing with me because I dared to say one nice thing about Philbin? I think he is doing a bad job. He is not a good head coach. I also think it is wrong to say he does nothing correct. There are some things that he is good at.
I'm not interested in arguing with you at all. I just question if Philbin is good at anything at an NFL level. I don't think he is. The only success he's ever had was under Rodgers.
I think that is hard to quantify because the reality is, we don't know exactly what he provides. We do not have a window into the inner workings of the NFL coaches. I do know he is in charge of practice and I do know that the Dolphins practices are tight. So I do think he does that well at a NFL level.
You make a good point about us not knowing what goes on behind the scenes. However, the OC and DC are proxies that show us their preparation. The decision to take time outs, switch players in and out, and scheme during the game show us, to a certain extend, how good the HC is. I'm not impressed. Practices... we talkin' 'bout practice? Eh, no need to carry on. Let's agree to disagree.
I will say that Allen Iverson never reached his full potential as a NBA superstar, and disregarding practice was probably one of the big reasons.
Hah. That's a whole 'nother can of worms. That could be true since anybody can improve but his supporting cast was never very good. He did let his career slip prematurely though, that's for sure.
Wannstedt was faaaaaaaaar worse than Philbin. You are basing your opinion on record and nothing else. The talent Wannidiot had compared to what Philbin has is ridiculous. Everyone bags on Philbin for letting them down down the stretch but claim Wannidiot with that talent, getting to the playoffs once is better????? I'm all for the next great coach, show him to me and I'll want to sign him up, but Wannyidiot was far and away THE WORST thing that ever happened to this franchise from a coaching and GM standpoint.....and its not even close.
To be fair Wannstedt had zero talent on offense his first year and went 11-5. I actually miss that mustached idiot.
