I know we are rivals with the Bills, but you cant deny the fact that the Bills will be very good next year. Matt Cassel can get it done with that defense and weapons

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with the amount of respect I've seen for Matt cassel and fitztragic since they've arrived on their new teams. They both suck, and will continue to suck.

No, it hasn't had any compensation tied to it in a long time, maybe back to the 90s. We get nothing for Clay, but we do free up another 7.1 mi in cap space. Cap space that we'll absolutely be using, either now or a year from now with rollover. That 7.1 cap number could be some combination of Tannehill, Pouncey, Miller, Vernon, ect next year.

We're all assuming this is over, and hopefully it is at that price, but is there any chance at all that someone in the Fins FO decides that Clay is just the weapon they need to win the Super Bowl this year and so goes ahead and matches the offer? :wink2:

Always even a high second rd pick, is something to sneeze at, the list of 2nd rd picks who amounted to da nada is impressive.

Still, loved Clay, that is crazy money, hope he invests some of it long term

That's a big number for Clay. I'd rather take Nick O'Leary in the third round.

Yep and we have a pretty good group of TE's . No need to spend an early pick at the position.

It just gives us the right to match or better the offer.

Congrats Mr. Clay...thanks for the memories...can't say I wish ya well!

Personally I'm glad for him that he got paid...and glad Miami didn't pay him that much (if they don't match...which I expect).

I recall CC9 as a rook, the lockout yr, cutting grass n Arkansas waiting for the lockout to end.

Will miss that kind of player for sure

Sucks to lose Clay, but that contract is too big to swallow. And Cameron is a better receiver anyway.

I dont understand. I love Clay but at those numbers? What is Rex seeing or what are we missing. Other than a fleeting eyelash wink at the browns. Clay wasnt sought after. ?????

Do you think the Phins will simply let the time expire on the tag just to keep the Bills in limbo and delay any other decisions they might have to make?

The Dolphins receive absolutely zero from the Bills. They can match the offer or lose Clay for nothing. I'm not sure why you seem to think they get any draft pick for him.

I don't know. You've got to imagine teams try to exercise professional courtesy in some aspects of the business. Certainly there are ways they jab each other, like picking up FAs the week before a game and then dropping them, but then there have got to be other behaviors that are outside the norm. What comes around goes around.

The only way I would match the Bills' offer is if the team has determined that Clay will be part of a two-tight end offense (e.g., Gronkowski and Hernandez) in which Clay's presence creates a synergistic effect. Otherwise, his individual contribution doesn't warrant the salary.

Saying Tannehill isn't better than Cassel or Manuel isn't the truth. It could be an opinion but that's the kind of opinion that lands you in a room with padded walls.

Clay is just a smaller version of Antonio Gates. He doesn't have 4.4 speed or a 4 foot vertical like Vernon Davis, but he has unusual movement ability, extraordinary agility and coordination for a guy his size, and of course, great hands.

He gets open and he catches the football. Sounds simple, it isn't.

I don't see anyone like him in the draft.

Jesse James is remarkable but is more an inline traditional TE, but he would make an excellent plan B.

Antonio Gates? Stop drinking. Antonio Gates at his old age is still recording 800+ yards along with 12 touchdowns, 4 times as much as Clay. Antonio Gates is an actual seam threat, Clay is not a threat on those routes. Antonio Gates plays upright, uses his length, Clay plays like he's 5'8.. I can't remember the last time Clay has towered over his defender and snatched the ball for a catch, I've seen Gates do that many times even at 34.
