Going Backwards on Offense?

    Let's not forget about the very real and widespread negativity-bias. That one's a biggy...it's all over the place.

    And it's not necessarily that people want to be negative or strive to be negative on purpose, but as soon as a fan of the team has "identified" a reason for the team's not being as good as he wants it to be, and started to blame its inadequacy on that part of the team, he's obviously far more prone at that point to: 1) notice, or give greater weight to, instances in which that part of the team is "a problem," 2) fail to notice, or give lesser weight to, instances when that part of the team isn't a problem, 3) notice, or give greater weight to, instances in which that part of the team on other teams is good, and 4) fail to notice, or give lesser weight to, instances in which that part of the team on other teams isn't good.

    "The theory determines what you see." And in a league as big as this, with as many moving parts as it has, in my opinion one is far more likely to be correct when relying on the objective data that incorporate the functioning of the entire league, than in relying on subjective observations, perceptions, and conclusions that are highly prone to the biases noted above.
