We made the playoffs three times in those seasons, which is three more times than we have with "our man" under center. I understand they have to pay him because nothing better is out there, but I am not sanguine about him being the answer at QB.

If Ryan Tannehill had Jay Fiedlers defense, he'd be in the playoffs his first three seasons. Need 33 men to win football games. On O, D, and special teams. You know that.

Unless you have a Marino, etc...but those things don't fall off trees...many of us older fans were spoiled with Danny...but some of us, luckily, have been able to move on. There's only 1 dude at that level of impact in the NFL right now IMO...and he's a cheesehead.

He should get paid, but this better not come at the expense of filling a few more holes (especially OG) before the draft.

"I'd like to get around to talking to him about something long term," Steve Ross said about a multi-year deal for Ryan Tannehill.

"I like Tannehill. He's a fine guy. Has all the great characteristics you want," Ross said. "He hasn't shown he can hit the deep ball."

I'm sorry, to quote Steve Ross accurately, he said Tannehill hasn't shown he can "connect" not hit the deep ball.

Funny how honest Stephen Ross is haha

Good cop, bad cop. That comes off as planned. Tannenbaum talks about paying Tannehill a bunch of money while Ross points out Tannehill can't hit the deep ball.

Honestly, if it were my money, I'd care...since it isn't, I don't. I wouldn't know how to project that, but guessing around 15-18 a year?

A QB who is playing at the level he played at this season all while showing significant improvement in each of his first 3 seasons in the league is gonna get paid. No way around it.

Because Dallas Thomas is actually a decent OG. He gets an awful lot of hate for a 2nd year player who's had to line up at 4 positions while hardly getting any reps his rookie year.

Based on the quotes above, it seems like the staff and the owner are not on the same page, so this will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out. I think 14-15 per year seems about right. I think he's going to get paid more due to Dalton and Kapernick getting better deals than they deserve.

I think Tannehill will get similar numbers but with more guaranteed money than Dalton or CKap.

    And then take their cornbread.

Adding to that... Dwight Stephenson. There wasn't a better center you could give to a QB like Marino.

To be fair to Fiedler (which is hard because he had a noodle arm and I hated him) it's not as if he had the greatest WRs in the world to throw to. Or a great offensive coordinator, or a competent coach.

The owner of the Colts has stated that they will wait until 2016 to enter into contract negotiations with Andrew Luck. He has led the Colts to the playoffs in all three years as their starting QB. He is widely accepted by everyone who follows the NFL as the best young QB in the NFL and most likely the soon to be best QB in the entire league.

Yet the Colts are in no hurry to sign Luck to a new contract. So I have no idea why the Dolphins are in such a hurry to sign a QB who has never even led his team to a winning season,to a new long term contract.

They should just let Tannehill know they will pick up the option for his 2016 contract and see if he continues to develop as an NFL QB in 2015. If he has a great season and leads the team to the playoffs, they can always work out a new contract after the season. If on the otherhand the Dolphins once again fail to have a winning season, the team will not a lot of long term money tied up in a QB the next HC might want to replace.

Well, either way Luck is gunna break the bank with an absolute monster of a contract, and be one of the highest paid QBs in the league ($20mil+/year), regardless if signed this year or next. Tannehill? We can still lock him up for only 15mil per season (which would rank #16 in the league in $/year). That's why we have more motivation for signing him earlier than the Colts. B/c ours is more based on potential/projections... where as Luck has already proven it. He'll get $20mil+/season... Tannehill will only get $15mil/season.

They're not the same circumstances. Everyone knows Andrew Luck is in for a huge payday and is going to get payed a lot more than Tannehill and the Colts are in no hurry to extend him when the 5th year is likely going to be significantly cheaper than his new contract.
Tannehill however is still in a situation in which the Dolphins can sign him before he potentially breaks out and maybe get him for cheaper than otherwise. 5th year option for Tannehill and his average yearly salary of his potential new contract are likely very similar numbers.

  35. They could also massively overpay for a mediocre qb by signing him prematurely

It is actually very simple. Miami is in better negotiating position right now.

Luck is going to be one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league.

Tannehill had a good statistical season, not a mediocre one. If that's his baseline going forward, he already earned that $15M contract. That's what QBs that produce like he did get payed in the NFL.

If however he continues his trend to improve every season and has, next season, an improvement proportional to his 13-14 improvement, you can best believe he and his agent are going to be asking for a lot more money. That's the risk the Dolphins are taking that the Colts are not because they already know Luck will likely make a record amount of money.

The biggest discrepancy is sacks. You gotta wonder why there's still questions about Tannehill when he plays like Brady. This proves the difference between winning teams and average teams can sometimes be players other than the QB...because if Tannehill is an average QB, then so is Brady.

Great news but I would've preferred they pick up the 5th year option instead. His stats are impressive but I don't think he deserves Flacco money yet. We still haven't made the playoffs under his leadership.
