You can't disregard red flags and to be fair I probably did just that when I put DGB 3rd. I could make a strong case for Jaelen Strong 3rd also. DGB plays what he times though. He has better hands and a better compete level for the ball IMO. DGB has a more extensive route tree and a better route runner. He's more fluid in to and out of breaks. He's a natural pass catcher where I see Parker let the ball get in to his body too much. Parker also does an average job high pointing the ball and relying too much on his height

He would've wrecked the senior Bowl if he wasn't hurt.

DGB might honestly be no. 1 if he played this year and had no red flags. I'm not doubting his ability, just his maturity.

That's what attracted me to Dorsett the most, his hard work. Ive seen a ton of WRs with jets, but most of them rely on just that..their jets. Dorsett wants to be a complete receiver. Hes not yet, and he knows that. He's a tough SOB. I would love to see him in Miami

Dangit. I was putting extra offering in the plate in hopes of Doubling up with Perriman and either Devin Smith or Dorsett. I would have gotten away with it to if it weren't for your pesky kids. *shakes fist*

Why dint you tell everyone WHY you would want to trade the next Aldon Smith at all? I mean, according to CK you already had a Vic Beasley on your team, so since you were so fortunate?? Why the hell wouldnt you go elsewhere with that pick?? Or perhaps you shouldve traded down since you obviously have no need for Vic, being set for 15 years at the position with Newsome and all.

So now the question is on you, if he is half the asset you are touting him to be? Why the hell would you trade him? And if you and Chris are so impressed with him, why draft Beasley?

When i was going back and forth between Lockett and Dorsett, I read Philip "didnt like playing in the cold" so he fits perfectly in JAX.

That's the guy I think he can become. A little undersized, but underrated route runner, and can absolutely fly.

I wondered how far Shaq Thompson would fall. I'm curious if the GM that drafted him sees him as a S or as a LB.

Me to...we discussed him as a possibility and moving him to safety. I think at this point in the draft...hes great value at either OLB or Safety

from the onset, my intention was to trade up to #6 solely for Beasley. Then I started digging on Newsome and realized it wasn't necessary, and the mere fact that I was actually willing to deal Beasley speaks to how much I like Newsome.

The auto draft list I turned into GIK had Amari Cooper 1st BTW :wink2:.... then Beasley & Fowler. Contradictory to assumption, I couldn't trade back b/c there was no trade back to be had. So I took the top player on my board. I mean, who the hell else am I gonna draft? Fowler, Gregory, or Ray? They're all pass rushers, genius. Danny Shelton? That's an even fatter luxury. No, I take my best player available. And LIKE I SAID, if I didn't screw up my trade back at 14, I would've had the extra pick I needed w/o involving Newsome.

I think that, with the proliferation of the spread offense, a guy that could play either WOLB in a 4-3 or as a 3rd S in the box in a 4-2-5 (depending on how you want to look at it) is extremely valuable, especially when it comes to covering big, strong, fast TEs down the middle of the field. It's just a guess, but I think that hybrid LB-S types are most likely the next evolution we'll see in the NFL as they attempt to slow down the passing game. Thompson was a guy I was considering at #20, had I not moved up to #1 overall. With the right defensive coordinator, his versatility could be put to good use.

Except Thompson is neither big, nor necessarily strong. Charles Clay for example who is not a big TE, outweighs him by 20 lbs. He'll also be at least 3 inches shorter than most TEs as well.

I think to be that real hybrid you talk about, the player either needs to be taller to make up for lack in size or speed, or much faster than Thompson is. Now as a coverage LB Thompson likely has better traits than most, but he doesn't have what I would look for in a S. Landon Collins for example would fill that hybrid role much better to me than Thompson, but I wouldn't expect him to play like a LB either (something I would expect from Thompson). A better example would be Lavonte David, who I also don't see as any sort of hybrid despite having quite the coverage ability for a LB.

Thompson has talent to be sure at LB, and plenty of room to grow into that role, but if looking at him as anything else, I'd not see the value at this point of the draft.

Great points. I think the prototypical "hybrid' slot guy is evolving more into a big corner/safety combo, not a LB/S. I remember about a decade ago, those slot corners were usually quick, undersized guys. Now they're evolving into safeties that can cover the slot (think Jalen Ramsey at FSU, or Honey Badger who is small but is physical enough to be a safety up high).

Of course you can use that Tweener LB/S guy, too, but more as a LB for passing situations than a guy who is asked to routinely cover No. 3 WRs.

We need both. Depending on how the draft finishes out Shaq might end up being more Kam Chancellor than anything. We run a 3-4, so he's certainly not going to be a lineman. I think it would be a waste of his talents to go inside, and Kerrigan is one of the OLBs in stone and Trent Murphy on the other side. He's not a thumper and at his size I wouldn't want to direct traffic to him. I'd like to see him rome a bit and have the Skins have more of a 3-3-5 look than a 3-4. But who knows. Maybe I'll get fired and none of this will even matter :)

Nothing personal PhinishLine but I don't see much in Darby besides raw speed. I don't see how these draft evaluators are giving him a second round grade frankly.

No arguments from me, Phinish. I was arguing that Shaq's best fit is SS [safety-linebacker hybrid more precisely] long before the media popularized it or Mayock threw him on his safety rankings. Snarky response about Todd tooting his own horn in 3....2....1.....

He's who I would've drafted as well. Armstead - Kikaha, nice defensive start to a draft. Nice duo of players to pair together.

Kikaha = Jarvis Jones w/ looser hips, better ankle flexion, and lighter feet. Just crazy that Jones went 17th overall. #SEC_hype_Machine

here, feel free to see the comparison.

Not taken personally at all. I had options at this pick, but I truly believe you can't coach athleticism. And I do believe that on tape Darby has shown that he can cover some of the guys that were taken in the 1st round. I don't believe he's just raw speed. I believe he is raw speed that has technique issues that can be coached with time, but when he gets it he is a pretty solid cover corner. But, as you alluded to when he uses bad technique it's going to hurt him much more in the NFL. He's a young guy at 21 who has plenty of time to grow and doesn't need to step right in and be the #1 boundary corner. He's a hometown kid from the DMV who I assume would love to come back home and play where he grew up. He'll be coached up by Perry Fewell who is a pretty good teacher of Defensive Backs. Sometimes you have to buy clay and build a flower pot instead of just buying it off the shelf. I think he's worth the 2nd round pick and I'm happy to have him as a Redskin.

He was just the best player on the board for what I needed. It was as simple as that. We're very pleased with the young defensive corps that we're building here.

Damn, I don't have that sort of money.

Ok, so with the 96th pick we'll go with Kyle Loomis, and we'll trade our last two picks for chris borland. there, if you can hype that then maybe we can work a min wage salary.

As a Giants fan and survivor of five years with Perry Fewell I can tell you we were happy to see him leave. But I agree, Darby can be coached up and turned into something special I just don't see that happening right away.

Had LSU spent more time developing and using Hunter as an edge rusher we'd probably be talking about him as a top 20 pick right now.
