Am I the only one who is really looking forward to this coming out tomorrow? It looks like they may be doing the Man Without Fear storyline. Also, I really like that it's dark and gritty - I know that's popular now but with Daredevil it's one character that makes seense. I'm hoping that this is awesome.

    There's no way it won't.

Marvel + Netflix = greatness, IMO

I just read on IMDB that this is going to be 13 episodes long and that each episode clock in at a full 60 minutes each. Given the TV-MA rating and length, I am hoping that this is going to more like an HBO or Showtime series and less like Arrow or the Flash. I am betting we get quite a bit of serialized storytelling.

The reviews I've read are saying its more like a 13 hour movie then a procedural or "villain of the week".

Its also not an origin story so much. There's flashbacks to his origins, but it doesn't follow typical hero timeline storytelling. Also, all the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.

The reviews I've read seem to describe it as being grittier, more like the Christopher Nolan Batman movies in feel rather than the Marvel movies and TV show have been. I'm very excited.

For the most part it works being darker and grittier because Daredevil is a street level hero. It's not an origin story per se but they are basically starting him from the ground up in terms of where he is as a superhero so we'll see how it goes. I can buy Cox as Matt Murdock, but Daredevil isn't working as well.

Yeah I just watched the first episode. It's a promising start and I like how it's grounded in more realism, especially with the fight scenes. I am tempted to binge watch it, but just wanted to try out the first episode and see if it was worth continuing on. Unlike Gotham I have no reservations about continuing on.

I also heard that unlike Nolan's Batman movies, that it has good fight choreography.

I am looking forward to checking it out this weekend.

I liked the fight choreography in Batman, but I was a fan of the Keysi fighting method before those movies.

I was never a fan. It was hard to keep track and Batman never looked like he was all that good at fighting. I felt it was the weakest part of all three movies. Especially the third.

Keysi (KFM) is a very practical fighting system. It's not meant to be pretty, but it is meant to be very effective in a street fight and against multiple opponents.

I saw the first two as well and thought they were excellent. They're much better than Gotham. I even liked them better than Agents of Shield or Agent Carter, which I do enjoy.

From our earlier conversation, if I had one critique it's that the fight scenes are a bit long and he throws in some showy moves I'd never use on the street.

I didn't find it entertaining and I thought it looked weak. Especially for Batman.

Plus it was hard to tell because it wasn't shot very well.

I do agree the fight scenes are too long.

I like the showy moves. Shows that he is a super hero. You would also never see a blind man with super senses fighting on the street.

I guess having a fighting background I didn't have any trouble seeing what was going on and I saw it as realistic and anything but weak.

Shouldn't need a fighting background to be able to follow a movie. Especially one with a guy dressed up like a bat.

I guess I just value realism in my fight scenes more than you do even in a super hero movie. That's a big reason I enjoyed the Nolan movies more than the previous Batman movies.

That is safe to say. I want to be entertained.

I liked the Nolan movies because they did a great job of setting up characters, having a plot and did a good job of playing with my emotions. It is my opinion that too many people look at the Nolan movies and think they are good because they are realistic and gritty/dark, and not putting the fact that they had good writing, pacing and all of the other things that make a movie good.

I'm nine episodes in. Here are some of my thoughts.

    • This is not like any other property in the MCU. It's dark, gritty, and realistic (at least for a superhero show). I appreciate that it references the rest of the universe, but it's not over the top with easter eggs and other nonsense. (That was a big thing that turned me off on Gotham)
    • They've done a great job of capturing the "never give up" attitude of the title character.
    • I like that there are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting for the time that I have been watching, though it does feel like I'm reading The Man Without Fear miniseries to some extent. (Not that I'm complaining)
    • I'm not 100% sold on Vincent D'Onofrio's portrayal of Wilson Fisk, but I appreciate that they're making him a more complex villain. The parallels between Murdock and Fisk are very interesting, and their paths have been parallel thus far.
    • Foggy is awesome.
    • The fight scenes are arguable the best that have ever been filmed for television. And that's coming from a guy who really likes Arrow.
    • I now have extremely high hopes for the other 3 Netflix/Marvel team ups ... but if you watch this and then watch the "Dirty Laundry" short, you can't help but wonder what a Tom Jayne / Marvel / Netflix Punisher series would look like.

I'll most likely wrap this series up tonight - I would have finished it earlier had I not had plans on Saturday night and Game of Thrones to watch yesterday.

I like the Nolan movies for all of those other things as well. I just don't need my fight scenes dumbed down to be entertained. In fact, it becomes less entertaining when I see something unrealistic and it takes me out of it.

They're filming Jessica Jones right now. But I doubt Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be out for another year plus.. Obviously Luke Cage has been cast but aside from references throughout Daredevil, not much on the Iron Fist front I don't think, yet.

I think being through Netflix just gave Marvel so much more creative freedom than they'd ever have on a network channel like ABC or CW for the DC properties. I loved the violent aspect, because it was so real. It wasn't crazy over the top like the second Punisher movie but it also wasn't so watered down and bloodless like most of the Marvel movies. The fact that they showed every cut, skrape, and wound on Daredevil was just amazing. I think it also made the character that more endearing and enjoyable, for maybe a casual or general TV watcher. I finished the show last night and I just thought it was so wonderfully done. I enjoyed Wilson Fisk being portrayed as a tragic villain almost, and how they smartly weaved in his "unreal strength". This was good, I'm pretty confident that their future shows and if they do more seasons of Daredevil, will be done exceptionally well

After watching Daredevil, I now believe they can make a good Punisher TV show.

Wilson Fisk was one of the most interesting villains I have ever seen. I have never seen a TV show or movie that depicted the villain in a love story. Basically his entire arc was a combination of him coming out of his shell and dealing with the trappings of falling in love while being a master criminal. Unless I am wrong, which it can be, I haven't watched all television shows, I don't think there have ever been a villain arc where his biggest obstacle is the fact that he is falling in love.

They also did it in a way that made Vanessa (the woman he is falling in love with) not an annoying see-you-next-Tuesday.

I also like the fact they made Karen Page a character and not someone who bad things just happen to, like she is in the comic book.

There is so much about the show I like.

Especially the fight scene at the end of episode 2. That was really all one shot. I am defiantly watching through a second time.

I am really enjoying the Fisk arc as well. I was never a big fan of that character, but this is an interesting take on it. In general, I think the best bad guys tend to be those that you can relate to and/or at least understand their motivation even if they take it too far.

They were shot very well. In fact, the stunt crew won the SAG award for their work there and the movie was nominated for academy awards for their cinematography and visual effects (as well as a host of other awards in those categories). The claim that the fight scenes weren't shot well is just ridiculous. What I don't like is when a fight scene is done unrealistically for the sake of entertainment (unless that's the point of the scene) or to appeal to those who can't see how effective a fighting style is.
