I'm really curious to see how this film turns out. I don't really care for JJ Abrams and I'm not particularly feeling nostalgic about Episode 4-6 characters returning. It's not that I don't like them, but no one in Hollywood seems to understand that nostalgia is best served by not breaking the 4th wall and letting the characters be characters. That whole "we're home" line is case and point. Also, can these new characters carve out their own niche and story in the shadow of Luke, Han, etc...? Going to be tough to pull it off. Hopefully it's not another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
I'm extremely excited. However, like other said, remember how HUGE the hype was for I-III? Now, personally, I like and enjoy those movies. Just because they may be "6" or "7" grade movies instead of "10s" doesn't make them crap. However, I know that millions of people hate them because they built up an impossible level of hype. I hope that doesn't happen with the new three. Judge them on their own merrits.
*shrug* To each their own. For me, judging it against all other sci-fi/fantasy major motion pictures from the last 30 years or so (not just Star Wars episodes IV-VI) and I see it as a well made and enjoyable film with a few silly parts (Jar Jar, ect). That's more than I can say for a lot of movies. For example, I think that all of the Star Wars movies are better than any of the original Star Trek movies after Kahn (3-6), and yet those don't get anywhere near the hate that I-III do. It's all about expectations. Did I like all of the directions that Lucas chose to take the characters? No, like most people I think it could have definately been better. Hence the 6 I hand it. But with all things, I prefer to differentiate between average and poor and not lump them together because they aren't awesome.
I don't agree about the first movie. I think the only Star Trek movie that is worse than episode 1 is Star Trek 1. I would rather watch Star Trek 5 again because I can actually enjoy it by how bad it is. Episode 1 is freaking boring. It make no sense and the worst part about it is the fact that it can be entirely skipped and nothing is lost when watching episode 2. It wasted my time, which I do not appreciate. I can see redeeming qualities of Star Wars II and III. However I, that is a terrible movie in both story telling, pacing, acting, and in all aspects of movie. In fact if it was a new property, I believe it would be as forgotten as John Carter. The only reason people defend that movie is because it has the name Star Wars. I would gladly watch Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, Genesis, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis over Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
SW Ep.1 was terrible in almost every way. The Mr. Plinkett review series (#1 of 7 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI) lays out pretty much everything wrong with it. Basically, Qui-Gon is a moron, the choice to prominently feature a child actor was a disaster, there are multiple glaring continuity errors, Jar Jar ... enough said, the plot is ridiculous (taxes? Trade discussions? Negotiations? WTF, this is Star Wars!?) and more. 2-3 were improvements, but still were messy, disjointed, and were filled with atrocious dialogue and acting. The main reason to be excited about VII is, simply put, that George Lucas gave up control. I am pretty solidly in the camp that thinks it was about 95% his fault for the awfulness of the prequels. Having the reins taken solidly out of his hands will return to a better time (Episode VI and V namely). As for the trailer, goddam I want to see this movie. Some intriguing stuff. The landscape with crashed Star Destroyer was amazing, the new Stormtroopers look badass, the "has that power" as Sick mentioned (that stood out to me as well, interesting ...), the characters look interesting. Just don't give away too much in the trailers please Disney, and make sure the finished product is suitably awesome. I think with projects like the animated series out there, the folks around the SW world have re-learned how to tell proper stories.
We need a thread merge basically same stuff minus front post. Anyways wanted to share a thought not a actual spoiler just a somewhat educated guess based off what I know on Star Wars but if by any slim chance I'm right i want to give people a chance to not read it lol. Spoiler Weird guess, what if the one pulling the strings behind Rylo in this is the one that Sidious / Palpatine talks about to Anakin before he turns. Darth Plagueis who was said to be able to bring back the dead but was unable to prevent his own. Referring to with Sidious says he killed him. I just remembered that conversation after talking about ancient Sith and Sidious could of been wrong about killing him. With Sidious dead as I'm sure he knew would happen eventually and then he steps in and takes over the new empire with the old scattered looking for control.
There are a lot of speculations going on. Spoiler Some say Darth Vader isn't dead. In the new trailer, Luke's speech says " The force is strong in my family. My father HAS it. I have it. My sister has it....." Suffice it say that is driving people off the rails speculation Darth Vader might still be alive somehow. Then there's some speculation Luke might be the bad guy. That he turned to the darkside. I don't buy this one, seems too far fetched. Personally, the bit of speculation I like the most is that bad guy Sith Kylo Ren is actually Han and Leia's son, that started Jedi but went bad. Their other daughter is a Jedi and is the one tracking him down. Makes for a nice story. Betrayal. Son vs Father vs Uncle. Sister vs brother. Would keep nicely with the theme.
The HAS part is actually audio from Return of the Jedi and that has been confirmed I believe. Spoiler Now I would agree the Kylo is likely a related member and solo's kid does fit that idea well. I don't think Luke has turned either.
Yeah the quote is from Return of the Jedi, word for word, still hasn't stopped the internet from going crazy with speculation. I also think they knew exactly what they were doing when they put it on the trailer.
Yea I get the speculation on Vader but I highly doubt he makes any return. Anakin as a spirit maybe but even doubt that. Just my gut says Abrahams is gonna tie all the movies together somehow, and my theory came from Spoiler To bring back a Sith Lord who like the Jedi's used the Astral Plane or whatever but Plagueis used it to come back. Makes for a extremely formidable enemy.
Episode I was atrocious. Not only is it just bad, it's unwatchable. The kid Anakin was a horrible actor. And how exactly did Padme and Obi-Wan not age while Anakin aged 20 years? And what the hell was the point of midichlorians? Did anyone who cared not get what the Force was? Episode II was a mild improvement and Revenge of the Sith is actually decent, though it was so weighed down by the first two that it doesn't get much respect.
One of the reasons I give Episode II and III a higher grade is because they actually had a point. They added to the story and didn't feel like a complete waste of time. Even when I was young and trying my best to like Episode I, I realized that the movie was pointless. If they just added to the screen role, "15 years ago they found a young boy who Obi Wan's master saw a lot of potential. There was some darkness in him. Obi Wan took it upon himself to train him after his master fallen to a mysterious Sith." It would have been more than enough for the first movie. In fact they didn't even need this much and could have started with the 2nd movie and added 2 minutes of exposition. It was a boring waste of my freaking time. (Though the end song during that long battle was really good. By far the best part of the movie)
"He's more machine now than man" He could come back as a machine programmed with Jedi knowledge and skills with the Sith controlling it.
Episode I's horribleness is crystallized by both the entire pod racing sub plot, and the nearly 30 minute pod racing sequence that followed it. Two Jedi Knights, can't figure out how to pay for spaceship parts, or obtain them through other means, other than gambling the freedom of a ten year old boy on an illegal and highly dangerous pod race? Even if the Jedi Mind Trick didn't work on Watto, there was seriously no easier way to obtain the parts? Qui-Gon's plan literally was to wait around for several days on a planet where they've already been attacked by a Sith and hope that his midichlorian machine was calibrated properly and that Anakin would win the pod race Come on.
yep, whole lot of wasted time and 20 minutes of high quality. I can't think of a single movie I've ever seen that started a <10 year old that I actually liked. Episode 3 was good though. It can hang with the first trilogy. I think with Abrams, we're going to end up loving the new one.
You mean Qui-Gon and Obi Wan fighting Darth Maul scene? Only redeemable scene in that movie. That song is called Duel of Fates, check it out on youtube. One of the best Star War soundtracks, along with Binary Sunset and the credit theme and Imperial March.
Yup. Duel of Fates and Binary Sunset are my favorite Star Wars themes. That second VII trailer was all the better for me because it started with Binary Sunset playing. John Williams sure knows how to make some kickass soundtracks. Hope he does VII too.
Since Empire is my favorite, I will always love The Imperial March. My dream growing up was for Imperial March to be the song that plays at my graduation. Of course it didn't happen, but I could always dream.
If they are bringing Vader back I would think it will be similar to how they brought back obi Wan. There is somewhat of a religious undertone through the story and Vader may symbolize demons like obi Wan symbolized an angel. It is not out of the realm of reason to advance that plot.
Not out of the realm of possibility but Vader won't be back and I will even guarantee that now that's how sure I am of that. Only way we will see Vader is some sort of Vision or Apparition like the cave in Empire. Anakin's spirit joined with Obi-Wan and Yoda on the astral plane thing at the end of ROTJ. If any would return it would be Darth Plagueis in my opinion, as he was the Sith who was said to be powerful enough to bring back the dead and even trying to defy it himself. Obviously this is just all my opinion and guessing. On that note My current speculations Spoiler Luke - Since the events of ROTJ he has gone into a self imposed exile, as he has become so powerful in the force he is more a Wizard than a lightsaber user and after doing something (i can't guess what) so powerful with the force it scares him, afraid of his power and it being used for wrong purposes he goes into exile. Han - I think he lost the Falcon potentially at one point hence the we're home part. More than likely has at least one child. While Han is a good guy he also was always a bit selfish and likely not being the greatest dad cause tension with family / kids and no longer actually with Leia etc.. Kylo - Likely child of either Luke or Han my best guess is Han and since Han was a absent father sent his son on a bad path and fascinated with his grandfather (Vader of course and likely why he has his helmet from that scene in the trailer) the young Jedi is brought to the dark side by the current Sith Lord. Sith Lord - My only guess is Darth Plagueis tying in with the world before Vader/Early Palpatine the guy who trained the original Sith Lord we all knew comes back showing off the fact he did as his legend says and found a way to not only return others from the dead but himself. Finding young Jedi Solo and bringing him the dark side. Leia - Not real sure with her likely a political figure still. Finn - I don't think he is an actual Stormtrooper while I may be wrong I think he may of been undercover and **** has gone south.
i swear i did a search before posting and nothing popped up which i thought was odd. glad they merged
I doubt they are bringing Vader back. I believe they are doing a call back to the speech Luke gave in Return of the Jedi to Leia.
throne room theme from episode IV is pretty cool too. Used that song at my wedding reception. It was the music we picked for when my wife and I entered the room. The nerds got it, the farmers in the room were clueless.
teaser trailer leaked for Star Wars Rogue One. it's imbedded in link, my brother was at this convention. looks like it's maybe right before episode IV. http://movieweb.com/star-wars-rogue-one-trailer-death-star/
great time to be a movie watcher. between the superhero movies and reinventing Star Wars. Even better is that my oldest daughter is finally old enough to really start appreciating these movies.
Great that you can take the younger generation to share in your childhood memories. I hope I can do the same with mine. I also hope the movie industry continues to disregard the growing Academy disturbing trend of belittling and shunning entertaining and grand scale movies, for the drama fest and "causes" overload they've been going with the past 4-5 years. Movies should be about entertainment. About touching your imagination and exiting your sense. If I want to watching boring drama and hardship stories, i'll stick to regular everyday life, thank you very much.
Your current speculations? Pretty sure that's almost word for word pulled from this: Unless you're the guy who made the video...
I haven't watched any of that stuff and won't watch them. (Not a big fan of spoilers but I like guessing) So I am pretty sure it's not pulled word for word. I can form my own thoughts thank you very much. At least some people see same stuff I do. I doubt I was the first to think the wizard route (mainly because it makes sense about Luke.) but I can't account for everyone on the internet speculating at the same time. I watched the teasers, got some ideas from them went to Star Wars wiki to do a bit of looking based off what I thought to make sure they still fit in current cannon. (stuff in the main movies / rebels) Look up all my speculations I bet you can find a video or post for them all. (go figure since tons of fans out there) lol....... anyways...... They are based off what I know on the universe and what I feel about about characters mixed in with teaser stuff. As well as conversations with few other fans and mainly my friend who got me into Star Wars when I was a kid.
I'll take your word for it, but you can see why I thought it was very familiar. From the video - "Luke Skywalker has become so power with the force, he's Less of a light saber wielding warrior character, and more like a wizard..." your post: Just a coincidence I guess.
lol think what ya like doesn't affect me I have my years of watching and being a huge fan of Star Wars (collection of games, graphic novels, books and more) is all I needed. The term Wizard came from my friend as we were discussing the route of Luke, maybe he read it I don't know but we felt that was most likely route. Either way not first time used to describe a Jedi or Powerful force user. Obi-Wan Kenobi: Wizard of the Desert Also still would be MY speculation either way because I could pick other things to believe. Luke going bad, Luke dying early on etc.. I didn't though. (As well several other speculations I have in that same post) As said before there are millions of Star Wars fans so people having similar theory and being talked about is not that surprising lol. I find it more surprising you felt it was worth calling me out on over. I can quick google search each of my theories and find something. You covered Luke so here I will quick google search a few of the basic theories I had. Han Solo Dies Speculation Kylo Ren a Solo Speculation Darth Plagueis Returns Those were all quick very basic google searches... I could type several more. So yes people share theories.. it's crazy!
Han Solo dying makes sense. He wanted it before, saying it was add gravity to ROTJ. Solo dying does the same for TFA and puts a stamp on Abram's trilogy. It also allows clears a path for the new characters.
I honestly think this has more potential than Abrams franchise/trilogy. A cool concept that ties into the film franchises already established, but freedom to do it's own thing. Looking forward to this one.
