pffft. you sound like us everytime we "upgrade" our QB, whether it was replacing Ray Lucas, Griese or Matt Moore. Going from 32nd best QB (or 38th best in the case of Geno) to the 24th or 25th best QB in Fitzy is an upgrade, but by season's end, it will be the same result. 8 wins (or maybe even 9 if the Jets stay healthy on defense)

 

The Jets will most assuredly split with us. On paper the Jests and Bills scare me more than the Patriots. The backbone of the Pats has always been their defense. When they are good they win playoff games and Championships. When they are below average they don't. The Pats lost a lot of their defense this offseason so we'll see what BB can do. The Jests and Bills defenses look to be very scary this season.

 

the backbone of the patriots has most certainly not been their defense. hasn't been so in several years. We lose to the patriots because we can't stop their short game or Gronk (when he's healthy).
I do agree that we will probably split vs Jets and Bills. if we don't shore up that guard position with someone like Mathis, I could see us losing both vs the Bills.

No, it hasn't. When they won their first few superbowls - it was defense. When they won this past season, their defense finally played at a championship level with that beefed up secondary and it paid off. The several years in between their defense has been mediocre and that team has been carried entirely by Brady and company. Even last year, with their improved defense, you could argue that it was also because Gronk was healthy all season.

 

Yes, it really has.

In only 2 seasons since Brady arrived have the Pats had a defense ranked below average. The Pats won 9 and 10 games during those seasons. Every other season, except one, their defense has been ranked in the top 10. With 5 of those being top 5.

Make no mistake about it...The number one reason for the Pats success, besides cheating, over the last 15 years has been their defense.

I guess having a very successful offense tends to help any defense's stats. Sure would like to see a comparison of NE's Def time spent on the field with their opponent's time.
