Due to the issue of his ex-girlfriend's death and La'el not able to officially clear his name in time, La'el has said that if he isn't taken tonight he won't sign any later contracts and will declare for the 2016 draft. We're talking about an Offensive Lineman who many had going in the first round. If he's available at 47, unless the Phins trade down, should they take him?
Until he his completely cleared in the murder investigation, I don't think any team is going to risk a high draft pick on him. Perhaps if he is still on the board in the fifth round, the Dolphins could use one of their three picks in the round to take a chance on him being able to get through the police investigation and play next year.
His agent has said if La'el isn't picked up tonight in rounds 2-3 he won't sign any contracts this year and will enter the 2016 draft.
Id draft him. He isnt charged with anything... Just questioned... And Albert injury history scares me
and if you draft him, and he ends up charged... you're out a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Assuming you give in to his agents demands of taking him tonight, or else. That's an awfully big gamble... No thanks.
Dolphins have four 5th round picks. If he is still available in the 5th then use one of those on him.
His agent said that if he was not picked by the end of today, he would not sign a contract if drafted later. It would be a wasted 5th round pick.
Okay dumb question time... Cant you just pay a 3-5th round player like a 1st or 2nd? If we drafted him later and he didnt sign....couldnt we just...give him a better contract? Are there rules dictating "floors" and "ceilings" based on draft position? I always just assumed the team had leverage because "this is what you're worth" - but in a situation like this...can you offer "more" than you normally would? Seems like you could avoid this whole issue but ...maybe i'm overlooking something the players union established for "veteran fairness" or etc. with the new rookie wage scale.
If I'm not mistaken, the new rookie wage scale agreement predetermines the salary based on draft position. Here's the official document if you want to see in detail if that's really true: https://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/collective-bargaining-agreement-2011-2020.pdf
Scrub? I can see if you wanted a different player, but to say he is a scrub is a little far fetched no?
Police often say that, to encourage the person to come in and talk to police. If police say the person is a suspect, it increases the odds that they'll immediately lawyer up, and never say anything. ---------- Carruth Not A Suspect November 16, 1999 Police have not described Carruth as a suspect, but said they think he has information that could help them solve the crime. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/carruth-not-a-suspect/ https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=qAgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2372,2015127&hl=en ---------- April 30, 2015 Police said Collins is not believed to be a suspect in the shooting, only that they want to talk to him to see if he can provide them with information. http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2015/st...ce-following-shooting-death-29-year-old-woman ---------- Rae Carruth's story.. - NFL athlete's ex-girlfriend was 8 months pregnant, and refused to get an abortion. - NFL athlete hires someone to murder his pregnant ex-girlfriend. - Pregnant ex-girlfriend is assassinated in a hail of bullets. - Pregnant ex-girlfriend is rushed to the hospital, where the baby is delivered via emergency Caesarean section, but ex-girlfriend herself dies. - Police describe the NFL athlete as "not a suspect", but would like to speak to him. - NFL athlete dodges police requests for a meeting. Sound familiar? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rae_Carruth http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...rder-eight-months-pregnant-ex-girlfriend.html What's disturbing is that La'el Collins knew since last Saturday that the police wanted to speak to him. He's been dodging them ever since, and has conveniently setup a meeting for next Monday (AFTER the draft). http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/04/lsus_lael_collins_knew_police.html http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...pected-to-meet-with-baton-rouge-pd-on-monday/ This is a MURDER case. Time is critical. Every day that goes by increases the chance that the trail goes cold, evidence gets destroyed, the triggerman flees the country, or kills again. If you're an innocent man that's going to speak to the police at all, you'd probably want to do it sooner than later, to help catch the killer ASAP. My guess is that La'el Collins setup the Monday meeting with police to convince NFL teams that he's cooperating. But right after the draft, I bet La'el Collins is going to cancel his Monday meeting, lawyer up, and say nothing to the police, and hope that the police don't have enough evidence to indict him.
Wow, I didn't fully digest it to figure out the exact scenarios - but the language in this is far more strict than I would have expected. It almost makes me wonder what the hell is even left to negotiations when signing draftees haha. In short...I don't know what the implications for Collins are...if he is an innocent man he seems like hes coming out with a short end of the stick no matter what. There are provisions for undrafted players all the same as drafted players. His best option from his own personal viewpoint very well may be sitting out a full year. Sucks if thats how it pans out based on the rules and his situation... someone more informed please feel free to correct if any of this isnt strictly true. I just dont see any immediate obvious gaps in the collective bargaining agreement - but then again, I only took a quick look.
Yeah, I took a quick look at that myself a long time ago and came to the same conclusion (basically nothing of importance to negotiate). You do realize that the ONE group that didn't really have a say in negotiating the new CBA was.. rookies (esp. future ones!). I think that was a bargaining chip that helped both sides come to an agreement.
Even if you COULD break the wage scale ... why would you? The entire point of his saga is that teams are not willing to risk resources in a person involved in a murder investigation. That includes the high pick and a high salary. You don't commit first round money to a guy who may end up in jail. Yeah he is not a suspect yet. But everyone knows that when someone comes up dead, the cops always take a really looooooooong hard look at spouses, girl/boyfriends and lovers. If he turns out to be the father, that may cast additional suspicion. He didn't want to share his new paycheck with baby momma or something of that nature. Total heresy at this point, but enough ?'s like that are involved to really make him a no-go with anything but a 7th. If he won't sign for day 3 money, then not worth even that. If he is truly innocent, he needs to take time to clear his name before either signing as a FA or joining the 2016 draft. Way to close to Aaron Hernandez. Bad bad luck for him if innocent.
My understanding if he's picked up in the draft rounds 1-7 he has the right to not sign a contract. This makes him eligible to redraft in 2016. If he goes undrafted he becomes a UDFA which he is not eligible to redraft in 2016. Anyone confirm this?
i think collins is unsignable now. he wouldve been drafted already if teams didnt believe his threat. he's going to be a 2016 draft pick or a free agent
He is now a UDFA if he doesnt sign does he become eligible for 2016 draft? If he stays a UDFA i think with the chance start and our great city Miami has a edge. Anyone know if he had any character issues going into the draft? might be the steal of a lifetime, id think he'd be in custody already if he was a suspect at all EDIT: guess we don't know http://mmqb.si.com/2015/05/02/lael-collins-2015-nfl-draft/
